Drug name Fluimucil Class: Mucolytic

Dosage 600g 1 sachet TID

Therapeutic action Exerts mucolytic action through its free sulfhydryl group which opens up the disulfide bonds in the mucoproteins thus lowering mucous viscosity. The exact mechanism of action in acetaminophen toxicity is unknown. It is thought to act by providing substrate for conjugation with the toxic metabolite

Indication Treatment of respiratory infections characterized by thick and viscous hypersecretions: acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis and its exacerbations; pulmonary emphysema, mucoviscidosis and bronchieactasis.

Contraindication Known hypersensitivity to acetylcesteine. As Acetylcysteine (Fluimucil) granules and tablets contain aspartame, it is contraindicated in patients suffering from phenylketonuria.

Adverse effects bronchospasm, angioedema, rashes and pruritus. Other adverse effects reported with acetylcysteine include nausea and vomiting, fever, syncope, sweating, arthralgia, blurred vision, disturbances of liver function.

Nursing responsibilities Record the blood pressure every two minutes from the time administration is started until the desired blood pressure is obtained, and then every five minutes if administration is to be continued. The rate of flow must be watched constantly Use plastic, glass, stainless steel, or another nonreactive metal when giving by nebulization. Hand-bulb nebulizers arent recommended because output is too small and particle size too large. Drug is physically or chemically incompatible with tetracyclines, erythromycin lactobionate,amphoteric in B, and ampicillin sodium. If given by aerosol inhalation, nebulize these drugs Monitor effectiveness of therapy and advent of adverse/allergic effects. Instruct patient inappropriate use and adverse effects to report.
