KATHREIN 'THE TOP BRAND IN 2004'

Gross profits and significant market shares on the one hand. Surveys and the opinion of the expert trade on the other hand. Both was positive for us in 2004. We were able to hold up our international grounds on a market which is hard-fought. We were optimally positioned in the field of professional antenna technology, that is to say, in outstanding reinstallations of large transmitting systems for the new digital terrestrial video broadcasting DVB-T, the international cell phone markets, automotive systems and car radio antennae. Business in broadband communication systems increased, and we were again able to strengthen our position in the field of satellite reception technology. All our plans and expectations were exceeded! In particular, I appreciate the result of the market suvey the information service 'markt intern' from Dsseldorf held. Most of the specialist dealers interviewed once again chose the brand 'Kathrein' as their favourite brand in satellite systems. We were happy to receive this mention in 2002 for the first time. Now, in the second survey, we carried off again. This is an excellent mention! Special thanks go to all

my employees and, of course, to all Kathreinspecialist dealers. The trade looked favourably upon the quality of our products and our innovations. Certainly, the consequent sales and marketing policy, via expert wholesale trade and retail trade, we embark on has contributed a lot to this outcome. We will continue prioritising this formula for success. The expert trade unmistakeably argued for purchasing our products. We will keep sticking to our specialised dealer loyalty. Sincere thanks are given to everyone for such a great, encouraging result. Thank you for these combined efforts! Yours,

antennae for the North American frequency ranges and RFID antenna systems are the focal points. The company also warehouses and distributes many Kathrein-group products as well, and is currently building Kathrein-group advanced designs to shorten the delivery cycle and to lower the costs.

'In 1954, thousands of heavy duty Yagi antennae were manufactured for the Forestry Service of the State of California,' Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein knows. ' This American success story has been carried forward till this day.' KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division The KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division, short KATHREIN Scala, is headquartered in Medford/Oregon. The company occupies an 7,800 m2 facility near Medford International Airport. Administration, Sales and Marketing, Engineering and Manufacturing are housed in the Medford location. The company is run by Manfred Muenzel, workforce currently is exceeding 100. There are sales offices in Arizona, Georgia and Virginia. Four regional sales managers see to the company's customer needs in the US and Canada, and a fifth looks after the growing business in Latin America. The KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division has been a steady supplier to many of North America's network operators: Nextel, AT&T, Sprint, America Mobil, US Cellular, among others. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: 'KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division's success has at all times been based on highly professional products of top quality.' According to him, this success was supported by an excellent business practice and a great aftersales service. Being a Kathrein group member, the company operates under the name KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division. Formerly, the company, which was founded in 1953, first operated under the name Scala Radio Corporation, before it was enamed Scala Electronics Corporation.

Scala Radio Corporation Founded as a home business in 1953 by Bruno and Connie Zucconi, the Scala Radio Corporation had its beginnings in San Francisco, California, when small RF test accessories were manufactured. Scala's first antenna project in 1954 was the design, production and delivery of a 5-element heavy duty Yagi antenna. Thousands of these antennae are used in the forestry service. A few years later, this antenna was modified to a single-channel Yagi antenna for MATV and CATV operators. Hence, the 'Gold Line' was created - Scala's patented, horizontally polarised slot antennae, which are still a sales-boosting product line. The company outgrew its modest quarters in San Francisco, and moved to a 1,670 m 2

group of four investors, headed by Ellis Feinstein. Scala Electronics Corporation In 1979, Ellis Feinstein moved the business, renamed Scala Electronics Corporation, from the Bay area of California to Medford, Oregon. With 11 employees, the company flourished and served markets worldwide, including Canada, China, India, Chile, Israel, Taiwan, Syria, South Korea, Grenada and other countries. During its early years in Medford, the company's sales grew at the rate of 20% per year. During the early eighties, the company supplied antennae for a low-power, satellitebased VHF TV service that covered every Eskimo village in Alaska. It delivered communications antennae to most US Federal Government agencies, the FBI, the Forest Service, the Coast Guard and even to dairy cow farms. In 1985, Scala Electronics Corporation and Kathrein signed an exclusive agreement for

building in San Leonardo, California, where it gained reputation for high quality, heavy duty antennae for both broadcast and communications applications. In 1979, Bruno Zucconi chose to retire from the business world, and sold his assets to a the distribution of mobile phone antennae and for the warehousing of products for Kathrein's sales office in Ohio. Thus, Kathrein and Scala were 'engaged'. In 1988, a purchase agreement between the Scala Electronics Corporation and Kathrein was signed. Throughout the following years, Kathrein by and by acquired Scala Electronics Corporation shares. Since 1998, as Ellis Feinstein withdraw from working life and Kathrein acquired his shares. Scala has been hundred per cent integrated in the KATHREIN-group. Since 1999, the company has been operating under the name KATHREIN Inc. Scala Division, short KATHREIN Scala.

Five years KATHREIN-Mobilcom Brasil a success story

KATHREIN-Mobilcom Brasil/Sa Paulo (abbr. KMB), one of the youngest member companies in the Kathrein group, have just closed their 5th business year. As difficult and unsettling the build-up of a manufacturing company may be, it is all the more surprising that KMB should have coped this period smoothly and quite successfully. In short retrospect After the article of agreement had been signed by Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein and Karlheinz Lensing as the partner and managing director, KMB was established in the southern part of the Brazilian industrial metropolis Sa Paulo. They were pressed for time as the North American competitors already had divided up the regional market Brazil among themselves, last but not least due to the North American standards in the cellular phone networks prevailing in South America. In order to stand the chance of entering the market at all, KMB had to act very fast. Already a few months later, the company was able to take up business in a rough-and-ready building, just to move into larger premises in early 1999. This move came just in good time, since the new licences which entailed the need for a quick network extension had just been issued in Brazil. This, in turn, resulted in an increased demand for antennae. KMB were able to share in this rapid growth from the word go, last but not least as the cross-polarisation antennae they launched found a ready market. This is how they won the first market niche, and, since those antennae have always been produced in Sa Paulo, this niche was then extended. Already after about two years, KMB succeeded in offering state-of-the-art antennae made in Brazil. In early 2001, and after a heavy lobbyiststruggle between the North American and European system producers, the Brazilian regulatory authority ANATEL decided for the 1,800 MHz range in the second wave band. Indirectly, this meant a decision for GSM, as there is no such system in any American standard for this frequency. Consequently, this

market was open for other suppliers such as ALCATEL, NOKIA and SIEMENS, KATHREINMobilcom Brasils most important customer. As a consequence, KMB had to increase the output of antennae in this wave band, which practically meant doubling the production capacity. Meanwhile ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited, KMB managed to acquire important system producers as customers also in Brazil. From the outset, the marketing was focussed on qualified technical support and proximity to the customers. This means, e. g., that technical documents are available in Portuguese as well as in Spanish inclusive the Practical Antenna Guide, compiled by KMB and meanwhile published with a print run of 8,000 copies.

KMB have been able to work their way practically from scratch up to now over 50% market share with intensive customer support, efficient logistics and immediate and realistic delivery times. The pillar for this success was the local production which, besides more proximity to the customers and improved delivery conditions, allows for a more favourable price setting. Almost 59,000 antennae had been produced in Sao Paulo by the end of last year, with the local adding value reaching on average 80% - and this with the well-known high Kathrein-quality-standard as the high customers satisfaction factor has been proving. However, sales activities have not only been confined to Brazil but were systematically stretched across all neighbour countries. Today, KMB have a network of sales representatives in the entire local market from Cuba to Chile, contributing to their turnover with appr. 15% at present. KMB have managed to become the market leaders in Cuba, Columbia and Peru. They chose an absolutely new way when deciding to produce LoS antennae (Line of Site = microwave direct connection). These type of antenna was included in the collection in mid-2003, on the basis of a technicalcommercial collaboration with the British company PRECISION ANTENNAS.

This guide is regarded as the ideal manual in South America. Due to this substantial spadework, KMB with their entire product range have been wellestablished with all the important network operators, such as VIVO/TELEFONICA, CLARO/ TELECOM AMERICAS or TIM.

Assembly of link antennae Since suppliers for local substitute goods were found for basic components, this antenna production line, too, is experiencing a strong growth and increasing sales quantities. Regarding their first five years, KMB have produced an impressive track record. As shown in the illustration on the right, the local antenna production rose relatively steady. Workforce, on the other hand, did not increase as much, which is a typical indicator for growing productivity and a reduction of the costs thereby resulting. This fact and an increased turnover clearly explain the affirmative results KMB have been able to achieve throughout these five years, despite all problems. In their next stage of life, KMB will face the challenge of advancing fast as can to a fully

structured industrial company with a make-to-stock production of state-of-the-art antennae. For this reason, the production of dual-band antennae was successfully started at the beginning of March 2004.

KATHREIN MOBILCOM BRASIL Move into larger premises

The rapid extension of the cellular phone networks in Brazil, particularly the nationwide changeover to the GSM 1800 standard, has caused an increase in the demand for base station antennae since mid-2003. Consequently, the production of dual band antennae was very successfully started in early March 2004. This had a positive impact on the output of KATHREIN MOBILCOM BRASIL (KMB), the market leaders. By the end of last year, almost 59,000 antennae were produced in Brazil, the local value added reaching on average 80%. As the existing capacities were utilised, they moved into larger premises in July 2004. The new facilities are situated in a modern industrial area in the south of Sao Paulo, only 2 km far from the former premises. Thus, they were able to keep not only their qualified staff, but also their existing telephone numbers, and

significantly improved. Light-flooded offices with modern furniture in the administrative building top off the presentable facility. The production of the panel antennae is carried out in the hall, and, separated by an internal partition, both the entrepot for the individual components and the repository for the finished panel antennae are also in the hall. so the communication with the customers, the suppliers and within the Kathrein group was hardly affected. A large loading ramp right behind the hall enables the loading and unloading of artics or containers. A second hall with about 1,000 m 2, separated from hall 1 with a broad and roofed itinerary, is currently used for the assembly and as a laydown for the link antenna production.

This separation is inevitable due to the absolutely different assembly methods and due to the floor space required by the dish antennae. The recreational facilities and the administrative department are in a third building. With a workforce of at present 140, the capacity of the premises is not utilised by far. According to KMB manager Karlheinz Lensing, work to full capacity was reached if about 250 employes worked in two shifts. However, Karlheinz Lensing is of the opinion that there are even more opportunities than merely extending the manufacturing. The marketing activities were not confined to Brazil too, but have been stretched across all neighbour countries throughout the past two years. Today, KMB have a network of representatives in the entire markets from Cuba to Chile, adding to KMB's turnover with about 15%. In some of these countries, e.g. in Cuba, Colombia and Peru, they also managed to become the market leaders.

Minister for Economic Affairs visits Chinese Kathrein-subsidiary

Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs meets Bavarian industrialist. Where? No, not in Bavaria but in China. On the occasion of a delegation visit, the Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Technology and Infrastructure, Dr. Otto Wiesheu, came to the Chinese subsidiary of Kathrein, the antenna specialists from Rosenheim. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein showed the minister quite plainly the strategic importance of the location Shenzhen for the Chinese, the Asian and especially for the rapidly growing Indian market.

International representatives meeting 2004 at Kathrein

The antenna and communications specialists Kathrein have invited to this years international representatives meeting in Rosenheim in August 2004. About 75 participants from 39 countries from Iceland to Australia, from Brazil to Iran - used this opportunity and exchanged their experiences. Company owner and principal Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein proudly revealed that the Kathrein group was able to experience a dynamic growth in the first seven months of the current legal and business year: 'Our turnover in these seven months of 603 mill. euros represents a growth by 5.3% and, compared to the first seven months of the previous year, an increase by 51%. For 2004, we are expecting to turn over more than 900 million euros. Currently workforce is exceeding 4,600.' According to Prof. Dr. Kathrein, this was something highly remarkable given the strong international pricing pressure. He explained that primarily in India a great number of antennae was needed since the mobile phone networks there are being extended literally explosively, which in turn rendered the network operators an excellent starting position for beating down the prices rather unconscionably. In China, the Kathrein company has to face up to firms copying the company and to the dumping of local manufacturers penetrating the market with sleazy cheap copies and even perkily promoting their stuff with the slogan 'quality products based on Kathrein technology'.

More than 75 representatives from 39 countries on this years international representatives meeting at the Kathrein premises in Rosenheim

Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein intends to perfect marketing and distribution methods in his companies in order to maintain the high production level (currently more than 75,000 mobile phone network antennae can be produced per month), to keep the employees salaried and to safeguard further growth for 2005. 'We consider a growth rate of 10% necessary to turn over 1 bn euros in total. This must be our common target.' According to Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein, all the necessary decisions were made. He explained that he invested in the production facilities, in the equipment and in the employees (since August 2003, 830 new employees have been taken on in all in western Europe), and he pointed out that this had been required for the national as well as the international Kathrein production facilities, e. g. in Nrdlingen (Germany), in Austria, Italy, Brazil, in the Czech Republic, China and Romania,

in order to be able to satisfy the customers high demands on a global scale. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: To remain successful as the world market leaders in the field of antenna technology, we will continue pursuing our

two-in-one strategy of a 'mixed calculation' within the group and for our products. The slogan 'doing one thing without abandoning the other' still applies. In plain language this means: We keep on counting on local production and focussing know-how at headquarters in Rosenheim but do not ignore the chances given on the world market. Only in this fashion will we remain strong and unbeatable.

Growth market Africa

On the occasion of the second Digital Africa Summit, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein summarised the market situation on the third-largest continent after Asia and America: There are no longer many regions and countries in this world where a growth rate of 10% or more can be achieved. In terms of cellular phone network, Africa has softly kept developing to one of the fastestgrowing continents, was the affirmative conclusion of the congress. With more than 30 mio square kilometres, Africa makes about 20% of the earths surface, however, with 780 mio. inhabitants, only has 13% of the world population but with almost 3%, Africa also is the continent showing the highest growth of population. The African cellular phone networks are predominantly based on the GSM standard, which was introduced by the European system suppliers. Due to the infrastructural conditions, Africa was the first continent to have far more cellular phone network subscribers than conventional telephone network subscribers. Among others, also Kathrein numbers among the pioneering suppliers. Kathrein was so far able to develop 65% market share with a distribution network structured in three different lines. Here, the front-runners in the field of mobile phone network antennae are Nigeria with 95% market share and South Africa with 90% market share. The North African customers are attended to by headquarters in Rosenheim, all customers in the French-speaking countries in Africa are attended to by KATHREIN-France, and KATHREIN-South Africa, based in Cape Town, attends to the customers in the rest of the continent. Kathreins success is due to the sound mature technology of our products and their excellent quality. Another very important factors are, of course, the close proximity to our customers and their support on the spot, Kathreins regional Sales Manager, Volker Kuhn, points out. Besides the Digital Africa Summit also the ITU Telecom Africa, a trade fair taking place in Cairo once a year in May, is becoming more and more a significant information and communication platform for the whole region. Kathrein were there as an exhibitor and acquainted the customers with the technical innovations and new developments, Volker Kuhn explained.

10 per cent market share in Japan

Softbank BB, a subsidiary of the Japanese internet search engine provider Yahoo, decided to realise their new concept Hot Spots & Wireless Internet with Kathreins UMTS antennae. Kathrein, together with the Japanese representative in Tokyo, have managed to break through in the new way of communication due to extensive trainings and seminars in Japan. The meanwhile mature state-of-the-art 3G/UMTS antennae and additional products were put to the acid test for the necessary technical applications and found in order and suitable in every particular. Kathreins regional Sales Manager Volker Kuhn: Almost two years of extensive market development and investments as well as exhausting market surveys have paid off. In contrast to those of the strong local competitors, our products have once again come out on top and fully convinced the customers due to their mature technology and compact design and due to the excellent service we provide. The various functions of Kathreins UMTS antennae were tested in detail in many discussions with the customers and the system installators in Japan. The RET system in particular was of great importance and focussed on. Peter Scholz (to the right), head of the cellular phone network marketing department: Only seldom were so many highly technical questions fired at us. The customers know exactly what they want and what is required, and have proved to be perfectly prepared for this new system technology. We were able to demonstrate that our antennae more than meet the requirements and that we are the perfect partner in technical respects for all intents and purposes. Now, a quick roll out will take place when the first orders for base stations in Tokyo are placed.

Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: UMTS and now Hot Spots & Wireless Internet are the new modern ways of communication. We offer the appropriate products for this and keep on ensuring that we will maintain the market leadership even in future due to the developments we make. Investing more than 10% of the cellular phone network antennae turnover in Japan makes it possible for us to invent new methods and realise new ideas.

Expansion on the Indian telecommunications market

In India, mobile telecommunications literally exploded last year, company owner Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein summed up at a training course Kathrein held for their Indian customers. Changes in the legislation regarding the call charges as well as the precise idea of the Indian government (communication for everyone) proved very efficient and successful in the past business year. This excellent development was reflected in Kathreins order books, too in particular in the field of cellular phone network, but also in broadcasting service, larger orders could be clinched. Currently, Kathrein are holding a market share of about 65% in Greater India and are actively involved in all important broadcasting service projects. In the course of an internal seminar in Rosenheim, employees of several major customers were able to catch up on the latest technical developments. Besides many presentations and lectures, the visitation of the production facilities and the presentation of new products and systems solutions were part of this seminar, too.

Sri Lanka), Rajeev Sadhu (Bharti Cellular Ltd. India), Vijay Goel Sadhu (Bharti Cellular Ltd. India), Dharmakeerthy Eldeniya (MTN Networks Pvt. Ltd. Sri Lanka) and Vinit Phatak (KATHREIN-India Pvt. Ltd.).

Standing up to strong competitors is not always an easy thing to do, regional Sales Manager Volker Kuhn explained. Establishing the KATHREIN-India Pvt. Ltd. to support the rapidly growing Indian market has been an abundantly worthwhile decision. GSM and CDM systems are being set up in India. Due to their long experience in the fields of cellular phone networks and professional transmitting antennae, Kathrein were able to reel supply agreements with local

network operators and system suppliers. The strategy we have been embarking on, i.e. establishing centres of competence on site, taking on domestic workers who know their customers business behaviour and who get on with the customary conventions and manners, is apparently once more bearing fruits. This, along with the technical and financial support from Rosenheim, appears to be the key to success, Volker Kuhn contentedly pointed out.

Sri Lanka extends her television and broadcast network

A new order for two broadcast transmitting antennae led the technical director of the private broadcasting corporation EAP Networks from Sri Lanka to Rosenheim. Lasantha Samaranayake availed himself of the opportunity of catching up at great length on the latest products and technologies of the antenna specialists when he attended a one-week seminar at the Kathrein premises in Rosenheim. Throughout the past few years, Kathrein repeatedly jumped at the chance of proving themselves as the competent partner for the extension of the television and broadcast network in several projects. Despite our strong commitment in South-East Asia and the Far East, we have not forgotten about the smaller countries like Sri Lanka. Now, profitable orders are worth our efforts, graduate engineer Wolfgang Niedhammer as Kathreins Far East expert forms his opinion about the further development.

Antenna technology developed in Rosenheim ready for the Russian market

Quality leads the way this slogan of the KATHREIN-Werke KG is also true for the Russian market. The auditors of the Institute of cellular communication and employees of the RC&C Ltd., the Kathrein agency abroad in Moscow, came to headquarters in Rosenheim to audit and certify the workflow and quality standards. The ISO 9001 relevant criteria have all been unobjected and certified. Thus, Kathreins transmitting and receiving antenna technology is ready for the Russian market. Currently, Kathrein are holding a market share of 92% in the field of cellular phone network base station antennae. The Institute of cellular communication is employing 600 people and 300 engineers and responsible for the certification of all telecommunications products on the Russian market.

Five transmitting antenna installations for the digital television in Taiwan

The digital terrestrial television system DVB-T is currently extended in Taiwan. In this connection, Kathrein have received an important bulk order for five professional transmitting antenna installations. The experiences Kathrein gained when DVB-T was introduced to Greater Berlin were the references due to which they succeeded in clinching this order. The installations, provided by the state-owned Taiwanese broadcasting corporation PTS, were immediately delivered to Taiwan and put on stream in April. They had been installed by the Kathrein partner-company OTC in Taipei. Beforehand, a delegation of eight paid a visit to the KATHREIN-Werke KG in Rosenheim. The foreign guests caught up on the latest products and the most modern transmitting and receiving antenna technology in a seminar. Prof. Chi-Fang Huang from the Tatung University for communication technology accompanied the delegation. He thoroughly talked the latest technologies in the field of terrestrial transmission of digital television signals over with Kathreins engineers. We confidently await the further extension of the digital television system in Taiwan, and are happy that we can definitely reckon with followup orders, graduate engineer Wolfgang Niedhammer, Kathreins project engineer in charge, assesses the prospects. The current order value amounted to appr. 350,000 euros.

New KATHREIN industrial park in Niederndorf, Austria

Prof.-Dr.-Anton-Kathrein-Strae 3 in Niederndorf/Tyrol this is where the new KATHREIN-Austria industrial park is located. The Mayor of Niederndorf, Johann Schwaighofer, was relieved when he was able to present an investor for the former office building and warehouse of the CHI Electronics AG. A stones throw away from the KATHREINAustria Ges.m.b.H, Kathrein moved into the appr. 6,500 m 2 large premises with 1,900 m 2 office and storage area each. This chance came in good season for us, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein explained. Slowly but surely we felt rather cramped in our 4,600 m 2 factory in Niederndorf. So far, we had only been able to produce on so much as an area of 2,200 m 2 , and, due to the relocation in immediate vicinity, we could build another production line for the manufacturing of base station antennae. Factory Manager Ottmar Sappl: We will start producing up to 5,000 base station antennae with 30 employees. We need about 1,000 m 2 as storage and production area, and 150 m 2 as offices.

are employed, in the factory in Kufstein 32, and in the new industrial park 28 people are working. This means that counted up with the 24 employees of the independent KATHREINdistribution company in Austria (Salzburg, Vienna, Graz and Vls), workforce is 299. The job agency Rosenheim managed the transfrontier placement of 12 temporaries. In addition, one trainee, one pupil in the training course, one student apprentice and one graduand are employed. The new industrial park will also be open for other companies.

The KATHREIN-Austria Ges.m.b.H., which has been in business for 26 years now, was established in 1978 as the first producing Kathreingroup company abroad. In 2003, the group with a workforce of more than 4,100, was able to turn over 750 mio. euros. KATHREIN-Austrias turnover amounted to 32.6 mio. euros in 2003, and 26.4 mio. euros in 2002. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: This represents an increase by 23.5%. In 2003, we invested 1.1 mio. euros in Niederndorf, now the investments will make up to about 3.4 mio. euros inclusive the new industrial park.

KATHREIN-Austria are currently busy finding suitable tenants for Niederndorf is a promising location, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein their premises, a task is explaining. Prof. Dr. Kathrein guest speaker at the European Forum in Alpbach

Transnational cooperation in the foothills of the Alps

This year, the opening day of the 60th European Forum in Alpbach/Tyrol was under the motto Tyrol and Bavaria. Almost all important local politicians had the honour of meeting in the picturesque village of Alpbach, one of Europe's most beautiful villages. The guest speaker of the morning opening ceremony was Dr. Erwin Huber, Head of the Bavarian Prime Minister's office. Later in the afternoon, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein was invited guest speaker and panellist when the subject 'Regions in Europe: transnational cooperation in the foothills of the Alps' was dealt with. Both guest speakers could take their attendance by surprise with their introductory statements. Dr. Erwin Huber evinced his pleasure in being seen as a Bavarian and not as a German in the Tyrolean mountain huts, however, Prof. Dr. Kathrein could cap it all off when pointing out not only his relatedness but rather his family ties with Tyrol. But that was enough of the common grounds. Their subject matters simply were too discriminative: Whereas Dr. Huber emphasised the political side of the Bavarian-Tyrolean friendship, Prof. Dr. Kathrein looked into the transnational economic activities, those of the KATHREINWerke KG in particular, in his lecture in the afternoon. You could literally sense the entrepreneurial commitment in his adopted country: Whereas Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein's previous speakers dealt with administrative and negotiated barriers to economy in the 21st century, he was able to present an absolutely simple solution for the transnational economising: Doing one thing without abandoning the other. Capturing the world markets headquarters-side. Our company has successfully been involved in Tyrol since the foundation of the KATHREINAustria Ges.m.b.H in 1978 with plant I in Kufstein. In 1999, the second step of the push in investments was completed as plant II in Niederndorf was built. The filter and hightech production, which was at that time established as 'Centre of Competence', is nowadays still trend-setting. And what you can understand

by competence is the record-breaking construction period of ten months for the plant in Niederndorf. Today, almost five years later, we have another address in Niederndorf: the new KATHREIN-Austria industrial park. However, Austria is an important market place not only for Kathrein. Austria numbers among Germany's six most important trade partners, and Germany is Austria's most important

import and export market place. German companies in Austria, with a workforce of almost 96,000, turn over almost 18 bn euros per year.

Information: European Forum Alpbach

The European Forum Alpbach was founded in 1945, then named 'International University-Weeks', by the Austrian College of Otto Molden and Simon Moser. Since then, these international university weeks (since 1949 called the 'European Forum Alpbach') have been taking place every year in August. Current scientific and ideologic advances and problems are discussed under one general topic in an interdisciplinary manner there. The European Forum Alpbach being a convention of leading representatives of science, politics, economy and culture, of professors and students, of practisioners and intellectuals, has contributed significantly to the spiritual life in postwar-Europe.

President of the advanced technical college visits KATHREIN-Indochina in Bangkok

NB) very close and effectively for years. This cooperation is stamped by the lively exchange of ideas between the professors of the KMIT NB and the advanced technical college in Rosenheim. By the medium of the former senator of the City of Bangkok, Dr. Chumpol Thiengtham, who also is a member of the university council of the KMIT NB, deputations of universities, ministries and companies from Thailand pay visits to the City of Rosenheim and the advanced technical college there several times per year. Within the context of a UNESCO conference in Bangkok, dealing with international training for engineers', the president of the advanced technical college in Rosenheim, Prof. Dr. engineer Alfred Leidig, has recently visited the KMIT NB, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and important companies operating in electrical and plastics industry in Bangkok. manager Chavalit Winichagoon and his employees. Prof. Leidig telling from his visit: 'We were brimming over with enthusiasm for the new company building, the brand-new interior and furniture and the newly-installed measuring cell. Mr. Winichagoon showed us round the company; he in particular took pride in his companys excellent sales figures despite a low stock. According to him, one of the reasons for this was that KATHREIN-Indochina would immediately carry out checks and tests of the components supplied by other companies in Thailand, and would immediately deliver them to their customers.' Prof. Leidig went on explaining that Chavalit Winichagoon had been particularly taken with a student apprentice of the advanced technical college in Rosenheim who did a great job for Kathrein not so long ago. As the professor pointed out, Chavalit Winichagoon had expressed his hope for another student apprentice or graduand of the advanced technical college in Rosenheim studying electrical or information engineering to work in his company very soon. Prof. Dr. engineer Leidig: 'Due to our visit, we were also able to initiate the cooperation between KATHREIN-Indochina and the KMIT NBs electrical engineerings study course in future. Thats a classical example for how the cooperation between our advanced technical college, companies abroad and universities can work.'

The flying antenna tip

Spectacular replacement over the rooftops of Cologne : In April, the television tower Colonius got put on a new tip suitable for digital transmission. The Swiss helicopter pilot Martin Peyer took off five times with his chopper to dispel the old tip and mount the new one. The television tower in Cologne has been transmitting up to 24 terrestrial programmes since 24th May 2004. When Martin Peyer and his team start to let go, not even the German Telekom employees in charge can stem the tide. As the weather is perfect on the morning of Saturday, 17th April 2004, the pilot takes off earlier than planned. His Russian helicopter Kamov rises from the lawn next to the television tower, and, a few minutes later, hovers above the the 266 m high Colonius. Peyers collegues three assemblers - are inside the old tip, hooking it before loosening the last bolts and screws which keep the very heavy section attached to the tower. Martin Peyer has hooked the first section already at half past eight, half an hour early. After a short flight over the lawn next to the Colonius, he puts it down. Then also Martin Peyer lands his Kamov on the lawn, just to wait until the assemblers have unscrewed the next section of the antenna mast more than 250 m high in the air. And since the weather is playing along so magnificently, Martin Peyers team manage to dispel the old antenna, and, without stopping over, mount the almost 5 tonsweighing pedestal of the new antenna on the tower within three hours. And this, altough the new antenna was not supposed to be mounted until Saturday. Meanwhile, the planners and the engineers stand on top of a skyscraper close-by, astonished at how fast the pilot is working. The fine weather makes Martin Peyer skelter After making the necessary preparations, Martin Peyer takes off at 3 pm, for the fifth and last time. Now, he is airlifting the last and longest section of the new antenna. It almost seems as if he would circle over Cologne Cathedral for the spectators' entertainment only. They hold their breath when Martin Peyer in his helicopter is hovering steadfastly in midair above the tower while the assemblers inside are screwing tightly the first bolts. Has the tip been screwed on hard and fast?, that is the enthralling question after all tag lines were pelted on the ground and the pilot approaches to land. Yes, it has. The pressmen and engineers, all of whom watch Martin Peyers masterstroke from the high-rise building close-by, cheer for the whole team. Egon Kraus, engineer in-charge, is brimming over with enthusiasm: Some people work all day long, and others turn an honest penny within ten minutes. However, the spectators held their breath during those ten minutes when Peyer was hovering above the tower with the largest antenna section on the hook. Being in action has never been too difficult for the calm and serene Swiss Martin Peyer. Bad nerves are not reasonable for the pilot

when he is airlifting tons-weighing objects: I find it most difficult if the assemblers are fastened aloft while they are working. They would stand no chance to escape if something went awry, he says. He adds that his company, however, would never accept a dangerous job and he is somewhat amazed by the many journalists watching him: After all, a football match is much more diverting, isnt it? While the preparations for the mounting of the last large section are in full swing up in the tower, Martin Peyer can find some time to crack some of his corny jokes. Sitting in the cockpit, perfectly laid-back, he is happy about everything going like clockwork so far. Its fair weather for flying today somewhat draughty, but not too much. And as the weather might change, he gets back to the grindstone.

As the collapse load of his helicopter is 5 tons at maximum, Martin Peyer cannot airlift the antenna to the ground in one go. The helicopter hovering over the television tower makes a great visual impact when Martin Peyer has the second and third section hooked. The Kamov stands still in the air for several minutes and the huge loop disappears inside the tip. Then the helicopter airlifts the antenna parts over Cologne city, just as though they would weigh hardly anything.

Sitting on picnic blankets, watching the spectacle A practised pilot like Martin Peyer does not mind if all instruments on board his Russian helicopter are lettered in Cyrillic script. In front of the cameras, he demonstrates how he works in the air. The left side window of his chopper is a plexiglass hemisphere. If Martin Peyer puts his head in there, the hook is exactly in his line of sight. Its better to to look directly on the load than through a mirrow, he explains. The area around the Colonius is cordoned off, so that the Kamov can easily be taxied and landed. The engineers on the rooftop are goggling just as the motorists watching the spectacle through their windscreens are doing while waiting behind a roadblock at the side road Innere Kanalstrae. Sometimes the helicopter hovers above the empty main road just as though it woud be looking for admirers. Many pedestrians, cyclists and other day-trippers on this Saturday take a break in jaunting

through the parks in the neighbourhood to admire Martin Peyers aerobatics. Whereas in the morning, plenty of people appeared to be still asleep, now, about noon, some people indeed unfold their picnic blankets on the lawn, which is getting more and more crowded. Only the hobby kickers who usually have their matches on the lawn where currently the helicopter is landing have to be patient on this Saturday until the conversion is finished and the helicopter has flown the coop. Since 24th May 2004, viewers in Cologne and the surroundings have been able to notice what all this replacement was good for: At this very day, the digital terrestrial television DVB-T went on air. The former antenna on the television tower would not have provided the necessary specifications for the transmission of the so-called berallFernsehen (TV everywhere). Initially, people can watch 12 public law and 8 private programmes. The reception of a further 4 digital programmes will be possible from 8 th November 2004 on.

This will be the day when also the moment will have come when the last viewers have to purchase a set top box enabling digital reception, since then it is close-down for the analogue transmission. In the long run, all North Rhine-Westphalians will be provided with 24 programmes, because the broadcast station on the Venus-hill in Bonn started transmitting DVB-T programmes at the same time as the Colonius. Although there will be no need for such a spectacle, the conversion of the television tower in Dsseldorf may still be well worth seeing. DVB-T in the northern German regions Hanover/Brunswick and Bremen/Unterweser went on air at the same date in each case. DVB-T is also supposed to go on air in the Ruhr Basin, the Rhine-Main district, in Hamburg, Lbeck and Kiel on 8 th November 2004. More regions will follow in 2005. Digital television in Berlin has been on air since the summer of 2003. Internet: Information on berallFernsehen available under: www.ueberall-tv.de

The television tower Colonius in Cologne digitally on air with a Kathrein DVB-T antenna
Colonius, the television tower in Cologne, visible from afar already, has got put on a new tip in a truly sensational mounting operation. The old, 16 metres long antenna tip was replaced by a new, 5 tons-weighing GFK antenna cylinder from the antenna specialists from Rosenheim, Kathrein, with a helicopter. The antenna pedestal, also weighing 5 tons, was replaced, too. This was necessary to meet the deadline for the start of the digital terrestrial television DVB-T in Greater Cologne/Bonn on 24th May. Within just a few hours, a Swiss helicopter pilot, a Russian cargo helicopter as well as some engineers and technicians from Rosenheim realised this difficult conversion. Kathreins mechanics project manager Hans Geyer explains: Already in the past, Kathrein successfully undertook such complex projects. What was difficult in Cologne was not the conversion itself but rather the fact that the tower is situated in Cologne City. This meant that there were hundreds of sightseers and the camera teams of RTL and SAT.1 present to watch the spectacle. Only due to our meticulous preparation and the helicopter and pleased that the major order amounting to 1 million euros went off without a hitch: Installing a transmitter 266 metres high in the air is not everyones cup of tea. That was carrying out work accurately to the millimetre in record time! The Colonius has been providing Greater Cologne/Bonn with 24 digital terrestrial programmes since 24th May 2004. By that time, all private programme providers stopped broadcasting in analogue transfer mode system. The public law programme providers are granted a transition period of six months.

Digital receivers Made in Bavaria

Stopping off in the Chiemgau region when travelling towards Salzburg on the motorway A8 is worthwile not only because of the beautiful scenery but also because the katek group, a Kathrein subsidiary established 20 years ago, have their head office in Grassau, just a few kilometres away. Apart from digital receivers, also signal meters, PC cards or electronical products such as multifunction antennae for automotive applications are made at katek. As they were TS 16949 accredited in 2003 (TS 16949 is one of the most stringent quality standards in the world), katek are now able to offer premium quality products for automobilecustomers. Their ISO 14001 environmental

Workforce in the entire group is 580. This means that Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein is the most important employer also in this region. To be able to cope with the workload, katek have introduced the three-shift-operation on six days a week. They regard themselves as full-service providers able to execute also the aftersales service. The output in the receiver production, which is automated to a large extent, has been steadily increased. The location Germany means plenty of advantages for katek, particularly with regard to the factor time. Whoever else would have been able to produce 50,000 digital satellite receivers by order of a major customer in best time in late autumn 2003? Another 40,000 receivers Made in Bavaria have been delivered to India. The better part of DVB-PC cards offered in Germany is made by katek.

The personnel costs at katek only amount to 8% of the receiver production costs. In the receiver production, unique barcode labels which the receivers can be identified with at all times are attached to the multilayer

circuit boards (currently up to 12) in a nonimpact process. Then, in the SMD equipment, ten components per second are attached on the boards. As the size of the printed circuit boards continuously decreases due to the integrated components, two printed circuit boards pass through the production process at the same time so that 36,000 components can be attached on one SMD poduction line per hour. In order to allow for receivers coming off the line every two minutes, assembly line production to the greatest possible extend was the most important item considered when the production facility was planned. Then, after the insertion machines, the circuit boards pass through nitrogen soldering lines. Next, each solder joint is optically checked, that is to say, 3,768 solder joints on one cir-

cuit board are checked in less than 80 seconds. Larger components such as the transformers, the Scart sockets or any other components are attached by hand, as in this case robots would be too inflexible and too costly. In the final inspection of the printed circuit boards the absolute operativeness of each circuit board, is checked. Any alignments and settings are automatically effected. Following, the mounting of the boxes is carried out every two minutes, using only a few screws and by means of the economical snap-in technology. The next step to pass through is the VDE high voltage check. In the end, the receiver and the accessories included in delivery, such as the remote control, user manual, power cable etc., are packed into the covering cardboard box. To ensure the maximum possible quality, spot checks of the ready-to-sell receivers top off the production. 500,000 receivers were produced at katek in 2003. They intend to produce carefully estimated as usual at Kathrein about 750,000 units in 2004. Made in Bavaria, naturally.
The corpi are fitted on the circuit boards manually

Each circuit board is thoroughly checked lest a device fails later on. All employees are grounded on the wrist against electrostatic charge.

Kathrein realise headend-project for Swiss market leader

The Kathrein distribution centre south under the direction of project manager Alexander Rein has recently succeeded in realising the assembly of a satellite IF distribution installation in the condominium Lettenhof in Basle by order of CATV Satellitentechnik, the Swiss market leader in the field of satellite receiving and transmitting systems. building complex. This headend receives and processes the signals for the 96 subscribers. Both reflectors are aligned to the ASTRA 19.2 East and EUTELSAT/HOTBIRD 13 East satellites, and provide failure-free reception of so far 38 digital television programmes in addition, three French channels are fed in via the terrestrial antenna. Furthermore, more than 25 radio channels of the border triangle Switzerland-France-Germany can be received via VHF. The signals received via the AUS 484 feeder system are converted into 1.Sat IF (950 2150 MHz) and fed through coaxial cables to the distribution boxes in the basements which serve as the perfect location for the switching point of the processing unit due to the stable temperature conditions there. Then, the satellite IF signal is amplified with the VWS 500 distribution amplifiers and, with the EBX 520 and EBC 12 distributors, fed in the room of the building complex where the main fuse and the main circuit breaker are. This signal and the terrestrial signal, which is passive-fed in via feed-in diplexers, are fed to the antenna sockets of the tenants via coaxial cables. The technical director of the CATV Satellitentechnik, Patrick Portmann, who had placed this order with Kathrein, was highly satisfied that the order was executed promptly and smoothly. He explains: The first thing for us to decide upon when planning an installation was whether to have a cable net or a satellite system installed. We settled for a satellite installation at once, also as this project will have amortised in four years already. In terms of technicality, we readily resorted to Kathreins know-how particularly with the headend-extension with QAM converters coming. After an installation stage of just a few weeks, Alexander Rein was able to put the installation into operation.

The proven UFOcompact processing system is the core of the installation

Short portrait of CATV Satellitentechnik The former television engineer and todays director general Werner Zimmermann established his own antenna technology and cable TV company in Basle in 1970. Convinced that the future for copy cycle, sound programme signal transmission and data communication would lay in outer space, he refrained from the field of cable television in 1984 and henceforth solely focussed on satellite technology. Since then, CATV Satellitentechnik advanced from an antenna-pioneer to the undisputed market leader in the mounting and installation of satellite receiving and transmitting systems in Switzerland and the bordering countries. 14 highly qualified employees offer service fultilment -advisory service, project planning, construction, installation, maintenance and service for small individual installations, medium-sized installations and systems for several hundred subscribers. Besides mounting conventional satellite installations, the company is also involved in the field of data communication, video-conferencing and world wide web all over Europe. In 2002, the company was awarded the IDEE SUISSE, the Swiss prize for innovations, for the promotion of economic future prospects.

To counter the inhabitants of the altogether 96 accommodation units installing their own satellite dishes on their balconies or patios, the company in Basle decided to have a distribution system Made in Bavaria installed. After a short planning stage in the distribution centre in Freiburg/Germany, the complex installation was assembled in just a few days and immediately put into operation. A headend with two CAS 120 parabolic reflectors and one AOS 32 terrestrial antenna was mounted on top of the

KATHREINs Remote Electrical Tilt System The answer to any current and future network demand
Network planning is becoming more and more complex, especially with the introduction of 3G. The wireless network operators are challenged by balancing coverage, capacity, call quality and costs in order to draw maximum profits. Each of the factors mentioned above affects the others, consequently the network engineers have to utilise many different technologies to establish the optimum equilibrium. One of these methods is the adjustment of the antenna downtilt. Here, the engineers have to consider certain facts such as the weather, cell site accessibility, availability of expert installation teams and special equipment etc. Moreover, such an antenna adjustment may absolutely take several hours to be performed. Since the cell site is usually switched off for safety reasons during such an adjustment, this results in lost calls, and therefore financial penalties are made. Consequently, operators tend to make fewer adjustments and so suboptimal networks are often kept in operation, which in the end also results in profit penalties for the operators. However, with Kathreins Remote Electrical Tilt unit, engineers can make the necessary adjustments without shutting down the whole system. Other advantages of the Kathrein Remote Electrical Tilt system: G No need for specialised teams trained in working aloft and with special safety precaution skills G Limited site access and/or time limits are almost irrelevant G No special platforms or other means to access the antenna are needed G Adjustments and the relevant measurements can be performed swiftly G Network alterations can be carried out irrespective of the weather conditions G No reduction in coverage cells remain fully operational while changes are being made G Operators estimate that approx. 20 % in UMTS equipment can be saved using an RET system RET components Kathreins RET system consists of the following components: G Central Control Unit G Remote Control Unit G DC Power and Signal Splitter G Control Cable G Lightning Protection Device G Earthing Clamp Optional: G Smart Bias Tee G Tower Mounted Amplifier

The RET system of Kathrein works in accordance with the AISG standard. Kathrein offer antennae for almost every frequency range, especially for GSM 900/1800 and UMTS. The following product ranges are available: Single-band-, Multi-band-, DoubleMulti-band-, Dual-band- and Triple-band antennae.

Each manually adjustable Kathrein antenna with a mechanical RET interface can be upgraded to provide remote electrical tilt by means of a separate unit (RCU). The advantage of this concept is that:
G G G

Communication between OMC and CCU The electrical tilt can either be locally or remotely controlled. Local control : The configuration of the RET system and the simple adaptation to network changes can be made via local control. In this case, an installation team has to be sent to the site. A laptop is connected by means of a PPP link to the RS 232 interface at the CCU. Alternatively, the Ethernet interface can be used. Instead of a CCU, also a PCA can be used for the local control. Remote control : Due to the required network optimisation with UMTS, the downtilt of the vertical radiation pattern has to be adjusted much more often compared to a GSM network. To meet this demand, a remote controlled system via OMC is inevitable. The Ethernet interface may be selected for the remote control in a local area network (LAN) or in a wide area network (WAN). The following transport and application protocols are served by the CCU: TCP/IP , PPP , UDP , DHCP , HTML and ICMP/Ping.

In future, the CCU will also be able to support a selection from the application protocols: XML-RPC, FTP , Telnet, SNMP and NFS. The software of the CCU also allows the operation of a cable modem or GSM modem connected to the RS 232 interface. RET Browser Application The CCU runs a webserver. RCUs and CCUs as part of a network can be configured and controlled through a standard browser, e.g. Netscape, Internet Explorer no additional software is required. The RET system can be controlled directly on site over a long distance. The connection to each CCU is generated easily by entering its individual IP address. In addition to the configuration and control of the connected RCUs and TMAs, the CCU programme also allows the display of the device status, the command history list and various

upgrading can be carried out also with antennae already mounted decision concerning the appliance can be postponed depending on experience number of antenna versions will be reduced

Communication between CCU and RCU The major component to control the RCUs is the Central Control Unit (CCU), which is located at the BTS. In order to cover all required applications, the CCU can be accessed from the Operational Maintenance Center (OMC) via the Ethernet input and/or directly by a personal computer via the RS 232 input. The max. number of RCUs, controlled by a single CCU and the usable cable length, depends on losses along the cables (e.g. 9 RCUs with 150 m cable length). Three options may be offered for serving the control signal to the RCU: Separate cables G Using Smart Bias Tees in the feeder lines G Via TMA The PCA is a portable controller for Kathreins Remote Electrical Tilt System (RET). It is a simple device for running the remote control unit (RCU) attached to Kathrein base station antennae, and for adjusting the vertical electrical downtilt. The product is designed for portable applications by the installers or the maintenance staff, consequently the standard Central Control Unit (CCU) is not required.

An upgrade for the remote control via the OMC is easily possible by just connecting the standard CCU instead of the PCA.

system errors. Via the alarm interface, all AISG alarms can be read out. It is also possible to perform CCU software updates. The browser application is a helpful tool for the installation team on site, especially during the initial configuration of an RET system. Each CCU and, with it, each of the connected RCUs can be addressed and controlled individually. Therefore, the browser application also offers a comfortable solution to respond to new situations by changing the individual downtilt angles fast and easily. RET Antenna System Manager (ASM) The OMC controls hundreds of sites. The IP/Browser solution is not suitable for comfortably controlling more than one CCU. The access to the various CCUs takes place in a serial form, which consequently takes a lot of time. Further aspects are:

Unexcelled variety Possibilities and limits of the satellite-IF distribution

Direct satellite reception brings a literally unexcelled variety of programmes. The Sat-IF distribution is practically unrivalled in smaller networks and provides both the installator and the customer a great many advantages. However, there are some limits.
Some hundred programmes transmitted via at least two satellites, speech and cultural diversity, TV, radio and data transmission, FTA programmes but also pay-TV direct satellite reception offers it all. The consumer himself decides what he wants to watch and listen to no media authorities will dictate him to. The necessary reception technology is sophisticated, at the highest stage and very multifunctional. Kathrein's fully-fledged and creative development team have planned a wide range of products for this purpose, which meets with all requirements, from small digital four-subscribers installations to large cascadable systems. Using the DiSEqC technology, you can even receive the signals of several satellites e.g., ASTRA, EUTELSAT/HOTBIRD and/or TrkSat.

Sat-IF distribution nets should always be configured in star topology. Where this is not the case and cannot be changed either, Kathrein offer the universal distribution system UFOmicro, which shows all advantages of the star topology even in tree-shaped and single cable networks. The appeal of the Sat-IF distribution lies in its all-purpose applicability with up to several hundred subscriber connections, and it is also unbeatable in terms of the costs. However, there are some application limitations for middle-sized and larger networks. In these cases, high-quality processing systems are unmatched another field in which Kathrein play a leading role. Sat-IF distribution for ASTRA reception About 80 % of all Sat-IF distribution systems were planned for the sole reception of the ASTRA satellite on 19.2 East. They offer the widest variety of German-speaking channels. For this purpose, Kathrein provide matrix systems with multiplex-multiswitches. Five inputs (4 x satellite and 1 x terrestrial) are standard. The EXR 5xx system is Kathrein's standard product line for the reception of the upper and lower ASTRA band. Due to its different variants and possible combinations, installations with four subscribers to up to several dozens and under certain conditions installations with even more subscribers can be realised.

Erich Rock, Head of Kathrein's satellite reception and broadband communications systems production department

The Sat-IF distribution is still one of the most popular ways of satellite reception, offering the viewers and listeners a peerlessly number of programmes, and this at rather a favourable price. The operator of such an installation can make use of a relatively common technology which has been proven and well standardised for years. In comparison to the other distribution technologies, landlords can get by on relatively low costs. Tenants can decide themselves on how many features their satellite receivers should provide, something that naturally also depends on the demands on their purses. The number of possible subscriber connections in conventional house distribution systems can easily be covered with Kathrein's cascadable satellite matrices. The Sat-IF distribution technology is economically advantageous for up to

100 connection boxes. But, if this figure is exceeded, you should deliberate about other possibilities. Processing might be more cost-saving in this case. However, irrespective of all financial considerations, the Sat-IF distribution technology like no other offers a guaranteed future. Already today, you can use your PC in such systems to receive data, TV and radio. The only possibility to receive HDTV (High Definition TV), the new international digital TV standard raring to go, will be via satellite for years to come, thus offering the (specialised) trade attractive potential earnings. Kathrein have always used the possibilities of the Sat-IF distribution technology to full capacity and forcefully advanced them. E.g., there is even an all-purpose distribution system (UFOmicro) available for tree structures.

are provided for the extension of the switching matrices. These satellite components show the same high-quality data as the basic units. They are not equipped with power supply units but energised via the connected receivers. Kathrein guarantee outstanding technical features for all switching and end-line matrices. The screening degree for the 47-300 MHz range is at least 85 dB, for the 300-470 MHz range it is at least 80 dB, for the 470-1000 MHz range it is at least 75 dB and even up to 2400 MHz, it still is at least 55 dB. Thus, this corresponds to screening class A.

The EXR 5xx matrices are ideal for digital ASTRA receiving installations.

Trouble-free cable and distribution loss equalisation : the VWS 500 matrix system amplifier

I Extendable basic units Kathrein offer the EXR 504, EXR 508 and EXR 5016 basic units with five inputs each (4 x satellite, 1 x terrestrial) and four, eight or 16 subscriber connections. All matrices show the same outstanding technical features, e.g. high decoupling (28 dB or 25 dB respectively in the EXR 508 and EXR 5016), low power consumption and minimum connection attenuation in the satellite range. They are all equipped with power supply units. The EXR 514 end-line switching matrix, which is to the greatest possible extent equal to the EXR 504 regarding the technical data, has no power supply unit. In general, the EXR system is cascadable. The EXR 554 and EXR 558 loop-through matrices

It may perfectly be adapted to the requirements of each installation with variable attenuators in each attenuation circuit. A high modulation strength, built-in pre-emphasis and a very efficient, short-circuit-proof power supply unit are some more features. Even more variety DiSEqc for several satellite systems Not only the fellow citizens from abroad appreciate the possibility of receiving signals of several satellites. Primarily if data are to be received via satellite, the alignment to one satellite systems is in most cases no longer sufficient. This is when DiSEqc comes into play no matter whether the signals are received

I Splitting on several lines Kathrein provide the EBX 520 splitter for the supply of two Sat-IF lines. The distribution loss in the Sat range is 3.8 dB. Terrestrial signals may also be led-through, and are attenuated by 3.5 dB. The EBX 520 is cascadable with further Sat-IF splitters of the same type. Thus, installation with a series of lines can be realised, e.g. for several apartment buildings. Power for large networks For optimum signal supply on the inputs of larger cascadable matrices, for the equalisation of the succeeding distribution losses in installations with a lot of connections, or for the equalisation of cable losses in longer cable leads, the VWS 500 matrix system amplifier is provided.

EXR 908 is the basic unit of the cascadable DiSEqc matrices.

via two antennae or via a reflector with multifeed-system. Receiving the signals of several satellites is no problem with a DiSEqc system. All Kathrein-receivers are equipped with the necessary instruction set. Usually, one more satellite system can be received in this country apart from ASTRA; very often EUTELSAT/HOTBIRD, but more and more often also TrkSat. In systems for the additional reception of the programmes of two satellites, the EXR 904 and EXR 908 DiSEqc matrices, and for the cascade extension, EXR 994 and EXR 998 are used. EXR 904 has four subscriber connections, EXR 908 has eight. They are both equipped with a power supply unit and an LED for the operating and function control. The EXR 994 und EXR 998 loop-through matrices correspond to the types EXR 904 and EXR 908, however, without power supply. Using them, you can realise cascades of up to 40 or 96 connections. The DiSEqc matrices show the same values for the screening degrees as the 5xx series matrices. The decouplings between the outputs

generator and may thus be operated also on quad-LNBs. UFOmicro single-cable systems Mainly in old buildings, very often star topology backfitting can only hardly or not at all be done. But Kathrein provide the ingenious solution: the UFOmicro system. Most single-cable systems more or less constrain the satellite reception, as merely part of the programmes offered can be received by the subscribers. This is not the case in a UFOmicro system. Due to a real masterstroke in respect of the development, all programmes can be received by the viewers. Some receivers even allow the reception of the pay-TV programme provider PREMIERE.

reception of two satellites with up to eight satellite levels in all. If UFOmicro is used, the receivers have to be equipped with the UFOmicro instruction set. All Kathrein-receivers of the UFD 400er product range, and for the digital reception the UFD 505, UFD 506, UFD 515, UFD 516, UFD 530 (suitable for PREMIERE ), UFD 550, UFD 554 and UFD 558, UFD 580 DVB receivers, and the UFE 235, UFE 335 as well as the UFE 336 Kathrein-EUROLINE DVB receivers provide this feature. Sat-IF in practice You can use Sat-IF systems for more than 16 or 24 subscribers. This technology is increasingly used by the housing industry in order to provide the tenants with TV and radio programmes. Kathrein have installed an impressive Sat-IF system for the firm of building contractors GEWOFAG AG from Munich, with 136 subscriber connections. The major project in a development area at the Friedenspromenade in Munich was successfully realised by the Kathrein distribution centre (South), lead-managed by Walter Polednik.

The EXU 544 single-cable matrix was designed for four connections (receiver). On the input, it has a quad loop-through matrix, four allotted, telecommandable Sat-IF/Sat-IF converters, a feed diplexer for feeding in terrestrial signals in the range of 47-862 MHz, a loop-through output for the cascading of the outputs of up to three EXU 544 and an integrated switching power supply unit. The EXU 544 is cascadable on the input for more than 12 connections. For four subscribers (receivers), two EXU 544 single-cable matrices are necessary for the

In order to counter many dish antennae being installed on the balconies and patios of the rented flats, the GEWOFAG AG decided to have a distribution system 'made in Rosenheim' installed. After two days' planning in the distribution centre (South), the N & S Antennenbau und Service GmbH/Schweitenkirchen, led by Gnter Beutel, installed the complex system within only five weeks. A head-end with three CAS 120 dish antennae and one terrestrial antenna was installed on one of the five rooftops. The terrestrial antenna receives and processes the signals for five apartment houses with 136 subscribers in all.

The reflectors are aligned to three different satellite positions (ASTRA 19,2, EUTELSAT 13 and TRKSAT 42), providing trouble-free reception of almost 800 analogue and digital programmes. The UFOcompact processing ensures the supply with terrestrial TV and radio programmes. The satellite signals received (feeding systems: UAS 484) are converted in the 1.Sat-IF (9502150 MHz) on the head-end and led-through to the distribution cabinets in the cellar via coaxial cables. Then, the Sat-IF signal is amplified by the VWS 500 system amplifier and led-through to the respective electricity rooms of the five apartment houses via the EBX 520 splitters. There, the signals are again amplified by the VWS 500 and superimposed on the EXR 5xx, EXR 9xx and EXR 21 Kathrein-matrices. Together with the terrestrial signal, which is

HFC projects in Belgium

External units made by Kathrein in Mechelen At the end of last year, Kathrein were able to clinch an order for the installation of a head-end for the Belgium cable network operator 'Telenet', headquartered in Mechelen. Telenet, the largest private cable network operator in Belgium, covers about 2.5 mio households in Belgium with analogue and digital radio and TV programmes. Apart from the planning of the installation, the order comprises the delivery and the installation of the appropriate external units. The six CAS 23 dish antennae with a diameter of 2.3 m each as well as the CAS 180 with a diameter of 1.8 m are equipped with an automatically controlled heating. About 1.65 mio households are covered with radio and TV programmes with these antennae. As 'back-up', in order to ensure 100% coverage, the CAS 180 with multifeedreception was provided. The entire steel-girder construction with the external units was mounted by Siemens Belgium in close cooperation with Kathreintechnicians. Another CAS 23 for the extension of the receiving installation is currently in the making. Kathrein modernise Belgium cable network Literally in the nick of time, Kathrein, together with Siemens Belgium, were able to clinch a major order of the Belgium cable network operator 'Telenet' for the modernisation/ upgrading of the Belgium cable network.

The order volume comprises the delivery of 35,000 VGP 833/841 distribution network amplifiers tailor-made for the customers' requirements, 800 complete GGA 8 trunk amplifiers as well as components such as return path amplifiers, diplexers and accessory. Kathrein had to advance a considerable amount of money on loan for the four different distribution network amplifiers, the development of which had started already at the beginning of 2003 in order to be able to execute a prospective order in due time. The order value amounts to some 10 mio euros. The amplifiers serve for the extension and modernisation of the existing HFC network in Belgium. Within two and a half years, all amplifiers are to be delivered and mounted. Start of construction was in November 2004. Being the largest cable network operator in Belgium, Telenet not only has its own HFC network but also uses the networks of their competitors. The network upgrading is carried out to create more transmitting bandwidth, which will provide even more services for the customers in future. Already at the end of 2003, about 2.5 mio households were Telenet-cable TV customers. Another main service, 'highspeed surfing' in the HFC network of Telenet is already used by 420,000 internet users.

Within the Telenet-HFC network, customers are able to have toll-free phonecalls with one another. This service brought more than 250,000 new customers for Telenet then and there. Network upgrading for WVEM The network upgrading of the Belgium cable network operator WVEM for several communities is carried out with products made by Kathrein.

VGP 9041-6

Kathrein was able to clinch this order in close cooperation of Kathrein's technical marketing with Siemens Belgium. In all, 5,600 distribution network amplifiers, as well as 1,100 GGA 8 trunk amplifiers are to be installed within two years. The upgrading was started in September 2004. The new, electronically adjustable VGP 9000 line is used as the distribution network amplifier, and the well-proven GGA 8 system is used as the trunk amplifier.

been equipped to 100% with the GGA 6 Kathrein-amplifiers and GGA 60 Kathreindistribution network amplifiers. This network was retrofitted to broad return path (65 MHz) by Siemens Belgium and Kathrein in 1998/99.

Kathrein involved in HFC project in Cuba

A HFC project for the cross-linking of hotels initiated by the Cuban government in the capital Havana has recently been categorised 'urgent'. The state-owned company 'Telecable' was invited to generate the necessary bidding documents and to compile a feasibility study. For lack of know-how in this field, 'Telecable' issued an invitation to tender concerning the consulting, charging and generation of neutral bidding documents to internationally involved industrial and consulting companies. In the context of a one-week expert seminar, Horst Schlgl, Kathrein-project manager for broadband communication systems, made an on-site training with eight Telecable-engineers and instructed and indoctrinated them in detail in all parts of technology. Thus, Kathrein got the acceptance of the tender. Horst Schlgl's consulting service, which was considered 'very, very good' by Telecable, comprised the following subject matters: I Specifications of the various transmission components on the climatic and atmospheric conditions in Cuba I Head-end technology for analogue and digital NTSC channels I Optical analogue forward path and return path transmission I Bidirectional line amplifier technology I Transmission technology for Internet, Video and VoIP (Voice over IP) according to the DOCSIS 2.0 standard I Status Monitoring of the system according to the HMS standard I Ingress Detection technology I Measurement procedures and measurement instruments I Calculation of the entire transmission system and determination of the component parameters I Maintenance and troubleshooting I Generation of bidding documents The invitation to tender was sent to an international clientele at the beginning of October. Last but not least due to the confidence of Telecable before the invitation to tender, due to their extraordinary competence in consultancy and due to their international kudos, Kathrein trust to be placed an order amounting to U$ 800,000 with at the beginning of next year.

Kathrein realise bulk order in Taiwan

Five DVB-T stations for the digital television in Taiwan initialised

The digital terrestrial television system DVB-T is currently being extended in Taiwan. Kathrein, the antenna specialists from Rosenheim, have just realised a bulk order for five professional transmitting antenna installations. The experiences Kathrein gained when DVB-T was introduced in many German conurbations were the references due to which they succeeded in clinching this order. The installations, ordered by the state-owned Taiwanese broadcasting corporation 'PTS' have now been successfully put on stream. They had been installed by the Kathrein partner-company 'OTC' in Taipei. It was the twelfth transmitting installation Kathrein and OTC mounted since 2002. The total order volume amounts to over 1 mio euros. This bulk order includes the project planning, the delivery, the construction supervision and the initialisation on site. Plain figures which give a brief description of the worlds biggest whoopee. Ozapft is was the motto on the Oktoberfest in Munich from 18th September to 3rd October this year. And what had been erected right in the middle of the fair, on the Theresienwiese? Cellular phone network antennae made by Kathrein. Surely the infrastructural conditions there have to be perfect, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein pointed out. 'This also applies for the individual cellular phone networks. The network operators have extended their networks and are now able to provide perfect radio coverage especially for the Wiesn. Several mobile phone antennae and base stations provided the Wiesn visitors with a line to the outside world. These additional installations were removed after the Oktoberfest. According to the T-mobile spokesman for the southern region, Dr. Markus Jodl, T-mobile had registered 250,000 calls per day and up to 20,000 short messages per hour: About 20% of our turnover on the Oktoberfest was made with foreign calls, most of them to Italy, he explained.

Kathrein provide state-of-the-art technology for the Bavarian broadcasting service Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR)
Transmission of the new digital terrestrial television system DVB-T is due to go on air from the Wendelstein in spring 2005. This new technology already functions in Greater Berlin, Cologne and Frankfurt. 'We will provide the new antenna technology also on the Wendelstein,' Hans Niedermayr says. The 3.4 tons weighing cable drum was airlifted with a Russian helicopter, flown by two Swiss pilots, to an ad hoc-built wooden platform on the BR stations rooftop on the Wendelstein. From there, the cable drum was heaved to the antenna mast and put inside the cable channel prepared for this purpose. As the ground there falls rather steeply, the assemblers had to be able to climb like alpinists, and had to be equipped and roped properly. The weather played along, too, so they were able to complete this first, important and weather-dependent phase of construction by the end of September.

The walkers in Bayrischzell were able to witness an unusual spectacle, however, for Kathreins technicians it was business as usual. Project manager Hans Niedermayr and

his team had to see to the delivery of a new coaxial cable for the antenna installation of the Bavarian broadcasting service BR on the Wendelstein.

HTV 115 15'' LCD/TFT television set

The HTV 115 LCD/TFT is the ideal TV set to complete the Kathreincaravaning-product range. The state-of-the-art LCD/TFT television set accommodates the cramped spacious conditions in caravans/mobile homes, however, no compromises were made as to the picture quality and the viewing angle. Even in daylight, the good luminance provides brilliant pictures. Besides, the TV set is equipped with the videotext function. The energy saving system according to the VESA/DPMS standard (DPMS = Display Power Management Signalling) provides for an economical power consumption. You can either place the TV set on a table or you can mount it on a wall (using, e.g., the HTZ 15 wall holder made by Kathrein), conforming with the VESA standard. The HTV 115 15'' LCD/TFT television set is either delivered as a single device or in the CAP 301 digital satellite set.

HTV 117 LCD/TFT 17'' television set with satellite receiver connection
With the new HTV 117 LCD/TFT television set, Kathrein have added a 17'' TV set to their caravaning-product range. Kathrein' novelty :

UFD 580 DVB-S receiver with state-of-the-art EPG

By the end of 2004, Kathrein will have equipped their UFD 580 hard disk recorder with the tvtv-EPG, the state-of-the-art programme guide. This new feature will provide EPG information not only on 60 programmes but also on programmes that so far did not offer this kind of information. This information will be available up to one week in advance and without the time-consuming need of changing the channel. Apart from the start of the programme, the tvtv-EPG will also inform on the genre, the contents, the actors and the story line. The consumers can choose their favourite programmes, recommended by the tvtv editorial staff, from the many digital programmes. On just pressing a button, the viewers can call up the detailed information stored in the EPG, and pre-programme their favourite programmes in order to have them recorded.

Additionally, the EPG provides an integrated search function. Having entered a term, the viewer gets all programmes the names or taglines of which contain the search term listed. Kathrein-customers who already possess a UFD 580 receiver, can update its software easily via satellite. Looking at digital photos on the TV screen The owners of a UFD 580 can look forward to being provided another top feature at the beginning of the year 2005. Who found that printing digital photos was too time consuming, or having negatives developed was too expensive, and who did not like

looking at the photos on the monitor of the PC either, can in future enjoy their snapshots in digital top quality due to the new feature the UFD 580 will offer. Due to a Memory Card Adapter (MCA) optionally available, to insert in one of the two Common Interface Slots on the receiver, the UFD 580 can read out and process digital camera memory cards. All steps to start the photo show can easily be effected with the remote control of the hard disk receiver. Just like for the tvtv-EPG, a simple satellite-update is enough to keep the receiver cutting-edge.

As the first producers in the world, Satelco, a company in the Kathrein group, have introduced their EasyWatch MobilSet DVB-T mini-receiver in May. It is embedded in a small module for the PCMCIA interface and allows the reception of digital terrestrial TV programmes (DVB-T) and interactive notebook or tablet-PC multimedia applications. The receiver can be used wherever digital services and/or digital television are already broadcast terrestrially. Currently, this is the case in Greater Berlin and Cologne but all other conurbations in Germany will be covered by 2006, and by 2010, the Federal Republic of Germany will be fully covered. A new Satelco receiver, as small as a PC card, allows the reception of DVB-T in mobile use. This receiver is voltage-supplied by a connected computer. A DVB-T antenna with integrated amplifier, developed by KATHREIN and included in delivery, provides perfect digital reception with excellent sound and picture quality. The spread and the utilisation of DVB-T in Germany will be a late-breaking subject here. Due to our longtime experiences in developing multimedia-devices, along with the competence of Kathrein, the worlds leading antenna producing company, we have already been able to launch a product providing the consumers all applications of today as well as all those of the new digital transmission technology in future, Satelcos Managing Director Robert Both delightedly said on the occasion of the launch. The receiver has been available in the qualified trade since mid-May. Find further information under www.satelco.de

Satelcos EasyWatch MobilSet DVB-T

Now also available for Macintosh

Satelco now offer their 'EasyWatch MobilSet DVB-T as a cross-platform solution for Windows and Macintosh OS X. Due to 'Eye TV', the software specialists Elgato Systems' (from Munich) software, which was in many cases internationally awarded and which is included in delivery, PC card format DVB-T reception is now also possible on Apple Powerbooks. EasyWatch is the worldwide first PCMCIA card solution for the digital terrestrial television, and was successfully introduced onto the market in June this year. A mini-receiver, embedded in a small PCMCIA interface module, provides the reception of DVB-T programmes as well as interactive multimedia applications. The EasyWatch set is available either with the Eye TV software for Apple powerbooks or with the Satelco DVB explorer for Windows notebooks. Since the Eye TV software for the reception of digital television has a lot of functions and is very crash-resistant, powerbook users are now able watch TV time delayed via DVB-T (interrupt, repeat and continue live TV), record programmes time delayed, process and save them on DVD, and programme recordings via the internet with an electronic programme guide. A functional click-on DVB-T antenna made by the world's leading antenna producing company, Kathrein, is also included in delivery. The shapely antenna with a high-capacity amplifier was specially developed for the technical demands in mobile reception. The integrated clip enables the easy fixing of the antenna on the notebook/powerbook and thus makes the reception of horizontally and vertically transmitted programmes possible due to the various possibilities to place the device. 'With the cross-platform solution, we are offering an absolutely unique product for the Macintosh market. For Satelco, this has meant another step into a new and interesting business domain', Robert Both, manager of Satelco confidently said on the occasion of the launch.

ESM 20 selective modem-individual line socket

Kathrein have developed the new individual line socket to be applied in branch line distribution systems and star topology systems, especially for interactive CATV/HFC networks with Band I transmission in the forward path. The very high decoupling between modem and TV/radio connection averts interferences in the TV/radio reception caused by the modem. In addition, an ingress noise-blocking function impedes the spurious irradiation of unwanted signals via the subscribers end devices. Signal splitting to the TV and radio connections happens selectively, thus a very low connection attenuation is reached. The individual line socket is available in a rugged diecasting body (with screw and claw mounting, suitable for UP sockets of 55 mm to 65 mm diameter) and can be combined with almost every installation programme

Tri-Sector Pipe UMTS Antenna

To meet the growing demand for unobtrusive site installations, a tri-sector antenna integrated into a single fibreglass pipe will be launched by Kathrein at the end of this year. The electrical features of each sector will in all respects be the same than those of individual antennas. This 2.3 m long antenna configuration consists of two sections; the antenna itself makes up 1.4 m and a service zone of 920 mm makes up the rest. This service zone provides space for the following accessories: G Jumper cables G Slimline Remote Control Units (RCU) G Multipack Tower Mounted Amplifiers (MPTMA 3xDTMA with or without RET support) G Optionally, an antenna splitter for combining the three sector patterns into one omni-pattern If the antenna system is mounted on a support mast with a similar diameter, the feeder lines can be run inside the mast and are thus invisible from the outside. Alternatively, the feeder cables can be laid through a lateral cable entry point. Due to the sophisticated design of this antenna, and as the other components, such as the feeder cables, the RCUs or TMAs can be concealed, the appearance of this new antenna system is simple on the face of it, but all in all very pleasing and unobtrusive.

CGW 1500 Cable Modem Termination System

Kathrein's CGW 1500 is a cable modem termination system (CMTS) for smaller and medium-sized cable distribution networks. Easy handling allows a quick initialisation within just a few minutes. As it can be refitted with additional return path inputs, it can flexibly match the current demand in each case. The changeover via software allows operation either in DOCSIS 1.1 or in EuroDOCSIS 1.1. the CMTS is accredited in both standards. One transmitter in the forward path (64/256 QAM) and one receiver in the return path (QPSK or 16 QAM) in the basic version provide fast and reliable broadband services. If necessary, the CMTS can be extended to up to eight return path receivers via plug-in cards. The noise accumulation is prevented with a stronger segmentation of the return paths. Thus, also a better signal-to-noise ratio is achieved. Redundant operation is also possible. All DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS-1.1 'Quality of Service' are supported. Consequently, network operators are able to offer, e.g., Voice-over-IP (VoIP) with guaranteed data rates. The integrated layer 3 enables the data traffic of the connected subscribers without transmitting it to the outside. Conforming with the DOCSIS-/EuroDOCSIS 1.1 standards, the data between the cable modem and the CGW 1500 are encoded with all safety criteria with Baseline Privacy Plus (BPI+). The CGW 1500 is equipped with a twofold Ethernet interface so that a paths-redundancy with automatic changeover can easily be established. All settings can easily be carried out via the control elements with integrated display on the front panel of the device. Moreover, remote control of the CMTS via the SNMP interface or a terminal programme with CLI (Command Line Interface) commands is possible.

Cable-Modem-Management-Software (CMS)

Kathreins Cable-Modem-Management-Software (CMS) is an inexpensive solution for the administration of cable network customers, for the provisioning of the cable modem as well as for the network monitoring. On principle, it is suitable for all cable networks with a data transmission conforming with the DOCSIS standard or the EuroDOCSIS standard. All data relevant for the billing can be collected and processed. This means, e. g., pack of data retrieval, cost input and the score of the individual customers for the accounting. Furthermore, the system enables an efficient and cost-saving way of network monitoring due to the retrieval in SNMP and the statistical evaluation of various modem parameters. Due to the modular configuration, the software packet can be adapted to different specifications regarding capacity and network size. A SQL database which is addressed to via a content-management-system is the core of the CMS. Thus, further expansions can easily be carried out. Open interfaces allow for the data migration in almost every accountancy software. Special features have been developed for the network monitoring. The Simple-Network-Management-Protocol provides the basis for it. Software operation is possible practically on every computer connected to the network, provided that it is equipped with a webbrowser. Apart from this web-browser, no additional software is needed. The CMS has three user levels which have been optimised for the data administration. To eliminate unauthorised data manipulation, the access to the CMS has been protected with user certificates. Consequently, a maximum amount of safety is guaranteed. The system runs on the basis of DOCSIS or EuroDOCSIS. The CMS was developed in collaboration with experts on software and cable network operators. Thus, it is a compact highcapacity software-system, optimised for the requirements of the cable network operators.

I CMS modules 1. Basic software Three-step user administration; customer administration, contract-database drawing up, registration of modem and host, IP addresses administration, determining QoS profiles, adjusting to the host area, determining parameters to the BPI profiles (data encoding), TFTP server, DHCP server, PostgreSQL database, ZOPE management system, TOD server, SNMP inquiry of the modem parameters (without statistical evaluation) 1.1 basic software limited for max. 100 CMS 100 C cable modems (Order No. 26110007) 1.2 basic software for unlimited amount of CMS 100 cable modems (Order No. 26110006) 2. Kathrein supply antenna system for new Mercedes Benz A-Class

Kathrein Automotive Systems have received an order for the supply of the antenna system for the new A-Class by the DaimlerChrysler AG. According to the specification sheets of DaimlerChrysler, all the various radio services had to be taken into consideration: Apart from the conventional radio reception, the antenna system should also be suitable for mobile phones, GPS, TV and radio-centralised door locking, fulfilling the high requirements Mercedes-Benz is known for. They realised these specifications with several antenna and reception modules placed all over the vehicles. The roof antenna serves as the central element which will be provided with VHF/LMK, additionally with a multi-band cell phone as well as optionally with GPS for the

navigation system, all depending on the customers' requirements. As a brand-new feature, the A-Class has now two more VHF antennae integrated in the rear window, enabling triple diversity reception in combination with the roof antenna via the diversity module also to be supplied. This will significantly improve the reception quality compared to an individual VHF antenna. For the Japanese market, additionally two TV antennae are integrated in the rear window in order to allow the reception of TV in the car, which is a very popular feature in Japan. Each basic model A-Class is still equipped with a reception module for the radio-centralised locking system (un)locking the doors

at pressing the button on the car key, supplied by Kathrein. Of course, all antenna modules are available with all the functional options necessary for the international markets and equipped according to the the local legal requirements.

Invitation to tender regarding the delivery of AIS antennae resulted in order

The Federal Waterways Directorate will have a new AIS (Automatic Identification System) installed along the coast of the North and Baltic Sea. This system functions in the 2 m band. According to the authority, it represented the new international standard for the identification of any vessel at sea, leading to an increased safety on waterways. The responsible Water and Shipping Authority in Tnning placed an initial order for the delivery of 140 directional K 523227 antennae to the amount of appr. EUR 140,000.00. Consequently, Kathrein were able to prevail mainly over competitors submitting lowerpriced offers in the earlier invitation to tender. The positive experience the authority made with the quality and the long life cycles Kathrein-products usually show are considered the decisive factors why Kathrein clinched the order 16 antennae of the same type in special design will be mounted on the beacon in Helgoland, too. Furthermore, Kathrein are intending to file a tender regarding the delivery and installation of filter components.

TELEXPO / So Paulo
Only five years young and already the market leader with a market share of 60% in the field of base station antennae in Brazil; we can be proud of what we have achieved!, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein delightedly commented on the success of the Brazilian subsidiary KATHREIN-Mobilcom Brasil. The high demand of the network operators particularly for dualband antennae in South America became clear on the biggest cellular phone networks fair in South America, the TELEXPO 2004 in So Paulo, Brazil. For this reason, Kathrein have already increased their output in local content production by 40% compared to 2002, and have been able to almost double their turnover in the same period. Currently, 100 people are employed at KATHREIN-Mobilcom Brasil. 380 exhibitors presented their novelties on the TELEXPO 2004. About 50,000 visitors used this opportunity and caught up on the latest products and innovations. Kathrein presented many novelties in the field of transmitting and receiving antenna technology. Karsten Kretzschmar, graduate engineer/ graduate industrial engineer, in charge for the product marketing of Kathrein, pointed out: Our multi-band antennae in particular found favour with the visitors as they are right now needed for the tremendous extension of the

GSM World Congress / Cannes

Kathrein, the world market leaders in the field of cellular phone network and base station antennae, once again took part in the most important European cellular phone network fair, the GSM World Congress in Cannes. The fair, which takes places once every year, experienced an increase in the number of visitors by 3,000, from 26,000 visitors in 2003 to now 29,000. This fair serves as a point of information on novelties especially for the technical and commercial executives of the network operators. A tri-sector antenna which was introduced to the public for the first time caused stir at the Kathrein-stand. An entire UMTS antenna installation for three sectors is integrated in a fibre glass tube (23 cm diameter) in this antenna. Although some of our competitors have presented similar products, we may be able to corner the market due to the technical design of our antenna., graduate engineer Peter Scholz, Head of Kathreins cellular phone network antennae marketing department was glad to say. What was remarkable was that we were able to record lively interest of the visitors from Africa and the Arabian states.

NAB / Las Vegas

Novelties in the field of the digital transmission of radio and television programmes enticed more than 100,000 specialist visitors to come to the 'NAB 2004' in Las Vegas in spring. Kathrein, together with the American subsidiary Kathrein Inc. Scala Division and the Italian subsidiary Sira, also presented their innovations in broadcast antenna technology on the world's biggest fair of the American association of broadcasting companies. Apart from the American prospective customers, the engineers from Rosenheim were able to welcome visitors from the Far East at the Kathrein stand, where some concrete projects could be clinched. Kathrein have just delivered five large broadcast antenna systems for the digital terrestrial

television (DVB-T) to Taiwan. They were put into operation by an engineer of Kathrein just while the fair in Las Vegas took place. Another eight systems are likely to follow this order. 'We were able to prove our competence as a reliable business partner when it comes to the extension of the digital television in Taiwan, and trust in receiving further orders', Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein assessed the prospects.

ITU 2004 / Cairo

In May, the KATHREIN-Werke KG and their two subsidiaries KATHREIN-France and KATHREIN-South Africa took part in the world's biggest telecommunications fair, the 'ITU Telecom Africa', in Cairo. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein had important conversations with representatives of the leading European system suppliers Nokia, Siemens Ericsson, Nortel Alcatel and the Chinese company Huawei. In his opinion it was remarkable that Cairo had become the life and soul for North Africa and the Middle East especially for many larger companies, as some of them had decided to withdraw their regional head offices from the Middle East for political reasons. New licences and the forced network extension have kept the Kathrein group's sales figures in North Africa growing. 'We have been able to become firmly established in the North African countries Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Libya, where we are now holding a market share of about 50 percent', Kathrein's regional sales manager Volker Kuhn explains. In order to be able to provide Kathrein's usual excellent service, the customers in the French-speaking countries are attended to by KATHREIN-France with the head office in Paris, and the customers in those countries where the official language is English are attended to by KATHREIN-South Africa in Cape Town and by the KATHREIN-Werke KG in Rosenheim. Apart from the conventional base station antennae for GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks, Kathrein also introduced the latest dualband and tripleband antennae, equipped with the patented RET system, on the fair.

ANGA Cable 2004 / Cologne

The transmission of TV programmes via cable and terrestrial antenna signals (DVB-T) means one of the most radical changes since colour TV was introduced. Now wonder that the cable TV, satellite TV and multimedia fair 'ANGA cable' 2004 in Cologne attracted a lot of interested people this year. To the qualified specialised trade, the ANGA cable quasi meant sort of a required course to which ANGA and the umbrella organisation of electro-technology and electro industry treated them. ANGA is the association of private cable network operators and the largest lobby in the German broadband cable industry. Digital solutions for all kinds of transmission were shown on the Kathrein stand. 'It's almost like we'd be having a home match here in Cologne', company boss Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein was glad to say. Only lately have Kathrein mounted a professional broadcast antenna on the 'Colonius', the television tower in Cologne. This antenna has been providing Greater Cologne with digital terrestrial television since 24th May 2004. Kathrein offer antennae and receivers suitable for digital television to the end consumer antenna technology fulfilment. Foreign guests were also very much interested to visit the fair. Angel L. Aguiriano (to the left on the photo, speaking with Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein) of the Spanish Kathreinsubsidiary was able to forecast bright business prospects as a result of a convincing performance on the fair and of lots of expert talks.

the so-called RET system (remote electrical tilt), above all embracing the raised requirements of the modern kind of transmission, UMTS, a newly developed and cost-optimised C panel antenna product line for the GSM network and an innovative adjustable tap for indoor transmission. Kathrein's central distribution manager Manfred Puschej: 'These terms are of course rather unmeaning to laymen. The Hungarian specialists and experts, however, are all attired in these products. They need them for the extension of their cellular phone network and

for setting up the UMTS network in the future. Our Hungarian subsidiary Rakotrade will support them. The accessories and our ongoing developments and improvements top off our range as a competent provider.'

In the context of his delegation travel through Hungary, the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Edmund Stoiber also paid a visit to the 'Industria 2004'. The exhibition, which takes place in Budapest once a year in spring, has

1,200 exhibitors from 65 different countries presented their novelties for caravaning, tourism and aquatic sports in six exhibition halls with 66,000 square metres in all for the 35th time. Aplenty special shows, event areas worth seeing and a lot of highlights helped the fair in spring becoming interesting for both, private and specialist visitors. The organiser Neue Messe in Munich was able to set a new course with the 5-day current time (shortened by three days), the extended opening hours and with a cheap leisure-time ticket. The fair for caravans, boats and international tourist traffic once again raised the dream of holiday and recreation in the visitors. The motto on the Kathrein stand was mobility and information. The product range for mobile satellite installations dominated the event. Kathrein mostly presented their newly developed digital components which provide all advantages of digital satellite reception for the caravaners. Peter Scharf of Kathreins partner-company Shapeg in Geretsried, Germany explained:

Now our customers can treat themselves to the pleasure of watching their favourite programmes far from home in perfect digital quality. In comparison to the analogue technology, digital technology offers a significantly improved picture and sound quality. You can already make use of it in most European holiday destinations. Among other things, in particular the small dimensions of the digital receivers exhibited,

tailor-made for the use in a caravan or mobile home where it is very cramped for space, were of interest to the visitors.

CommunicAsia 2004 / Singapore

This years telecommunications fair 'CommunicAsia' in Singapore was a complete success. After the fair had to be cancelled last year due to SARS, it has now again been the most important event of Asias broadcast and telecommunications industry. All six halls on the Singapore fair grounds were occupied by exhibitors. Visitors arrived from all over Asia. From India to Japan and from China to New Zealand, mainly professional prospective customers and decision-makers visited this event. It is really impressing how well-known the name Kathrein is in this area of the world, Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein said contentedly at the fair. 'Many of our customers had booked meetings in the run-up to the fair. We are highly satisfied with the market trend now, after it had appeared as if the extension of the cellular network in several countries was negatively influenced because of SARS. Today, people are again very much interested in the new UMTS-3G standard, especially in China.' Kathrein presented new developments in the field of mobile telecommunications antennae. A portable device for adjustment and calibration, as well as a tri-sector antenna, likewise redeveloped, caused a stir. Currents subjects in the field of broadcast antennae were also discussed with the customers and diverse deals

were initiated. Kathrein has already received an order for DVB-T antennae in Taiwan. Several test receivers (measuring device) made by Kathrein-group-company Schomandl in Grassau, were also presented. They completed the portfolio and went down very well. 'Together with our subsidiaries in the region which were all represented by contact persons at the Kathrein stand, we made sure that all visitors were able to contact their go-between direct. We were able to offer the usual, well-known service with the help of our specialised staff from Rosenheim. Close contact to our customers is extremely important to be able to react immediately and accurately to their requirements', Local Purchase Manager Volker Kuhn explained.

The antenna specialists from Rosenheim demonstrated their competence in the installation of newly developed antenna systems for the terrestrial digital transmission of television and radio programmes. 'This new type of antenna is of particular importance for our potential customers from Malaysia. The FM networks are being extended there, which means that digital radio and TV are on the verge of going on air there', company boss Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein pointed out in Amsterdam. 'We trust in receiving a bulk order, for we have been known for 20 years to be a reliable and competent business partner when it comes to the installation of broadcast antenna systems', Kathrein-Director Alois Trepesch added. More than 1,000 companies from over 120 countries exhibited their novelties. Almost 50,000 specialist visitors came to the fair. MATELEC 2004 / Madrid

All the interest of the telecommunications branch was directed towards the 'MALATEC 2004' in Madrid. This fair lasted four days and is considered the most im portant trade fair in Spain and one of the most significant telecommunications fairs in the world as well. Sure enough that also Kathrein, the antenna specialists from Rosenheim, presented their novelties there. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: 'What literally forces us to be present here at the fair is mainly the growing cell phone market. All the big players among the network operators use the opportunity to discuss important matters with our engineers and technicians. After all, we are currently holding a market share in Spain of about 70 percent in the field of mobile phone antennae.' Products for the processing and distribution of TV signals, signal meters and satellite receiving systems topped off the range on the Kathrein stand. 'Here, our longterm commitThe Antenna Edition 2004

KATHREIN racing and rallye team with positive upshot of the season

The 'Herminator' in full strength always feared in Austria : Hermann Ganer and Karin Thannhuer

Hermann Ganer and his co-driver Siegi Schrankl were able to become the runners-up with their production car Mitsubishi in this year's rallye season after they won the German Rally Championship in 2003. Hermann Ganer is called the 'Herminator' of the Group N. And justly so, for he so far has won not only the German Rallye Championship twice (in 1995 and 2003) but also 8 Group N races, and has finished the Group N seasons 1996, 2002, 2003 and 2004 as runner-up. He is thus leading the 'eternal' German Rallye ranking list and meanwhile considered the most successful active German rally driver. Hermann Ganer has continuously taken part in the ADAC 3-cities-rallye for the 25th year in a row. This year, he and his longterm co-driver Siegi Schrankl were finally able to celebrate their first victory in this old-established event, which means another highlight in Hermann Ganer's career as he now is third on the podium in the Mitropa-Cup 2004, too. The KATHREIN racing and rallye team is a constant also in the Austrian motorsports scene. Hermann Ganer and his female co-driver Karin Thannhuser have well and truly been startling the Austrian rally scene since the season of 2000, and have been teaching their competitors the meaning of fear for years. Winning the Austrian Rally Championship three times in a row, you daresay he managed a one-of-a-kind hat trick in this championship. Due to scheduling conflicts with regard to the German Rally Championship, he practically had no chance to remain so successful in Austria.

But after all, Hermann Ganer and Karin Thannhuser were able to finish third this year after he they had become the runners-up in 2003. The KATHREIN-Werke KG have been sponsoring a whole variety of sporting activities in motorsports for more than three decades. In addition to the members of the KATHREIN racing and rallye team, also significant regional and

national rallye events are financially supported. The company-own KATHREIN rallye was intensively promoted to enable people around Rosenheim to experience motorsports very close. Martin Stockhammer and his female co-driver Michaela Kusebauch used the window of opportunity and stood up to the comrades-in-rallye motored better by far, with their Volkswagen 'Golf'. Martin Stockhammer has been a member of the KATHREIN racing and rallye team for five years already and has been having a hand in the team's success with his victories ever since. This is a perfect example for the combination of the promotion of regional sporting activities and sportsmen Kathrein has been exercising for years. It points up the company's close relatedness with Rosenheim and Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein's sociopolitical responsibility.

to him, people in Germany were still rather deliberate in spending their money, the prices were cut close and the goods were virtually sacrificed. Prof. Dr. Kathrein explained: 'At present, we are obliged to sell three times as much in order to realise a sales volume that amounts to one and a half times as much.' He added that the costs of materials, which increased by leaps and bounds, were another aggravating factor. For example, the prices for steel rose by 55 percent and the prices for plastics inflated by 66 percent. Prof. Dr. Kathrein also disclosed the following figures: 'Never before did we take on more employees as in 2004'. In Rosenheim, 223 employees were recruited, 273 in Nrdlingen. This means that workforce in Germany increased by 550, by 900 world-wide. At the same time, the Kathrein company keeps on sticking to the principle 'doing one thing without abandoning the other'. Thus, also in Romania, the Czech Republic (55 each), China (29) and Brazil (69) new employees were taken on. In 2004, Kathrein have invested 32 mio euros worldwide. In the Czech Republic, Romania, Austria and Thailand they either purchased ew production facilities or had them built. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein: 'This is an extraordinary success the employees of our group of companies could realise!'

In 2004, turnover of the Kathrein group amounts to one billion euros, 50 percent of which has been realised abroad.

Eve, we will have turned over one billion and 30 million euros!' For the first time in the history of the world's largest antenna producing company with the longest tradition of all competitors (global workforce 4,600), turnover will amount to over one billion euros. Prof. Dr. Anton Kathrein is looking particularly favourably upon these figures in times being rather difficult in economic respect. According
