New Family Law Support Program
Up And Running
Te Advocacy Centre is pleased to announce that its
new Family Law Support Program is up and running.
Designed to help residents of the West Kootenays who
cannot aford a lawyer and are navigating the family law
system on their own, this free program can help with in-
formation, referrals and access to forms. Individuals who
are dealing with the Ministry for Children and Family
Development will also receive support in understanding
and navigating the child protection system.

Save Te Agricultural Land Reserve
February 2014 marks the 40th birthday of theAgricul-
tural Land Reserve (ALR), created to protect farmland
across BC for agriculture. Te ALR has become known in
North America and around the world as a forward-think-
ing and efective planning tool. It is the envy of policy-
makers in many other jurisdictions.
In November 2013, news media reports outlined govern-
ment threats to the ALR and the Agricultural Land Com-
mission (ALC). BCs farmland is scarce, less than 5% of the
provincial land base. In an age when we must grow as much
food as we can locally, preservation of farmland is crucial. So,
its troubling to hear of a recent proposal by BC Agriculture
Minister Pat Pimm to Cabinet, arguing that the ALCs man-
date should be expanded to include economic development
priorities such oil and gas industry, and that decision-mak-
ing power over agricultural lands should be transferred to
the BC Oil and Gas Commission for most of the province.
We need a province-wide strategy, namely the one we already
have: the ALR, a zoning tool based on soil and climatic po-
tential, with an independent quasi-judicial organization, the
ALC, to administer and protect the ALR lands. If the prov-
incial government decides to make oil a priority over food
and neuter the ALC, it will propose legislative changes in the
spring sitting of the Legislature, which opens on 11 Febru-
ary 2014. We therefore encourage you to mark your calendar
and attend the Save the ALR Rally with your family, neigh-
bours, co-workers and friends on February 7, 7 to 9 pm at
Nelsons United Church. Together, we will save the Agricul-
tural Land Reserve and support farmers and food systems.

Sultans Of String At Te Langham
JUNO nominees/two-time CFMA winners, Sultans of

Te West Kootenay EcoSociety is bringing a bit of the
summer fun of Nelsons outdoor markets into the heart of
the winter. At 8 pm on January 30, at the Spirit Bar in the
Hume Hotel, EcoSociety will host Market Music Night.
Tis celebration of summer market music will defnitely
warm you up and put a skip in your step.
EcoSocietys Markets Director, Jesse R. Woodward,
has put together a line-up that will sure to please. Start-
ing at 8:30, Heartsong, featuring Morien Jones, will take
the stage. Morien is a Cottonwood Market favourite with
his upbeat and fun songs about love, relationships and
the beauty of the Kootenays. At 9:45 the dynamic duo
of Funk and Rosen, featuring local stars Rob Funk and
Brian Rosen, will add their sweet harmonies and folk
funk vibe to the night. Finally, at 11:00, DJ Ginger, of the
famed Meow Mix DJ collective, will spin everyone into
a pleasant and balmy groove. My original idea was to
try to bring back a little bit of the fun and warmth of the
summer outdoor markets, Woodward said. Tere is
still fve months to go until the frst Cottonwood Market
opens so this is event will be a chance to get a taste of the
joy and excitement that comes with being at the Nelson
summer outdoor markets. Tis will be an EcoSociety
fundraiser, so there is a suggested $10 donation that can
be made at the door.
Te West Kootenay EcoSociety administrates and oper-
ates the Downtown Local Market on Baker street, Cotton-
wood Community Market at Cottonwood Falls Park and
MarketFest, the monthly Friday night street festivals that
will take place on June 27, July 25 and August 22. Tese
projects are designed to promote local food security, re-
localization of our economy and to create a meeting place
for arts, culture and community networking.
West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-proft organization
located in Nelson. Trough education, outreach, com-
munity building, research, and advocacy, the EcoSociety

Jumbo Update Winter 2014
In a recent interview with the Manager of Major Projects in
the Mountain Resort Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands,
Mines and Natural Resource Operations, I learned that the
Ktunaxa Nations Judicial Review, challenging the Jumbo Gla-
cier Resort Master Development Agreement, will be in court
in Vancouver for two weeks starting January 6, 2014.
Te Ktunaxa Nation has consistently opposed the resort
as the Jumbo Valley, QatMuk, holds cultural, environ-
mental and spiritual values for them.
I recently talked with my government contact person,
senior advisor for local government decisions with the Lo-
cal Government Programs, who told me the province has
given their response to the West Kootenay Eco-Societys
Judicial Review. Te Eco-Society opposes the creation by
the BC government of the Jumbo Mountain Resort Muni-
cipality, a municipality without residents. Now it is up to
the society to respond to the provincial government. No
court time has been scheduled.
Wolverines are now taking on an important new role
in the conservation community. Due to current interest
and fndings, wildlife biologists from Canada and the US
are concluding that wolverines are becoming a bench-
mark species as they are extremely sensitive to human
encroachments on their habitat. In short, if we can meet
their survival needs we should be able to meet those of
many other species. Wolverines are listed federally as a
Species of Special Concern in western Canada. Te US is
looking to list them as an Endangered Species.

been identifed in the Jumbo Valley.

Roller Derby
Te West Kootenay Roller Derby league had a thrilling
2013 home season. Te Kootenay Kannibelles, the WKRD
travel team, had a few adventures as well. Tere was the
frst ever Roller Derby Canadian National Tournament in
Edmonton, AB. Tere were hundreds of kilometers trav-
eled and handfuls of teams played all over Western Can-
ada and the US. Tere was Spokarnage, the tournament
where the Kannibelles proved themselves the hungriest
carnivores of all, beating out some high level USA teams
to win frst prize. No big deal.
So when you see that the Kannibelles are going to open
up the WKRD home season for 2014, its a game you wont
want to miss you may even want to go online and scoop
up advance tickets as soon as youve read this sentence.
Tanks to the support of Selkirk College, the WKRD is
able to start our 2014 season a full 2 months early. Tis
means that the frst game this year, while usually in April,
is going to be in February instead. February 8 at 5 pm, to
be exact.
Te Kannibelles will be host-
ing Avalanche City Roller Girls
from Fernie. ACRG has been
working hard for the last couple
of seasons, determined to carve
out their place in the derby
world. Te Belles played ACRG
in Sparwood last August and it
was a nail-biter from the begin-
ning. Te fnal score was 208-
140 in favor of the Belles, and if
you know derby you know that
is a deceptively small win mar-
gin. Te Kannibelles may have
started earlier and pulled ahead
in derby in Western Canada, but
Avalanche City wont hesitate to
nip at their heels as they climb
the ranks themselves, and our
Belles will have to fght as hard
as they ever have before!
Te Belles have experienced
some big changes since 2013.
Perhaps most notably, Coach
Phil Yer Pants stepped down af-
ter 3 years of feasting with the
Belles to pursue other non-derby
goals; as we are sometimes re-
minded, even our most dedi-
cated league-mates have other
lives. He leaves behind big skates
to fll afer his time leading the
team. Stepping into these with
bravado are Kai Bosh (a WKRD
referee, coach of the Nelson
Killjoys, and skilled derby brain
with feet to match), and Bobbi
Barbarich (aka Beretta Lynch, a
long-standing force in Canadian
roller derby in her own right and
a skater and coach known across
the globe for her speed, strength,
and smarts). Together they will
take on the task of corralling these unruly carnivores and
directing them to their next meal, and the Avalanche City
Roller Girls, though a skilled and charming group of ath-
letes, are certainly looking delicious.

great roller derby that will be coming to the Kootenays in
the 2014 season! February 8 at 5 pm at Selkirk College in

Passions Collide In A New Stand Up
Paddle Board Website
When Castlegar-based graphic designer Kathy Verigin
discovered a new passion, it wasnt enough to just pur-
sue it; she had to share it. Te result is a marriage of two
passions design and sport in an easy-to-navigate, in-
formative website all about stand up paddle boarding.
Verigin grew up in the Okanagan region of British Col-
umbia, where water sports were part of childhood. She
discovered stand up paddle boarding in Hawaii, when she
rented a board and was instantly hook ed.
Nothing compares to riding the waves, or fat water
paddling under a setting sun, she says. Stand up paddle
boarding is glorious anywhere theres water.
SUP seemed like the perfect sport to Verigin: easy to learn,
great for core ftness, a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, and
with scope to challenge yourself as you learn. What Veri-
gin discovered was that there wasnt any one website with
enough information needed to startup, maintain and ex-
plore this relatively new sport and all its distinct disciplines.
What was missing was one go-to website to fnd out
most everything you need to know about SUP, she ex-
plains. And as a digital designer for print media, design-
ing a website for a sport Im passionate about and flling
that gap just made sense.
Since stand up paddle boarding made its debut as a
popular, accessible, easy-to-learn sport about a decade
ago, the sport has grown exponentially, with SUP fes-
tivals and events worldwide. Verigin hopes that all kinds
of people, of all ages and ftness levels, will give the sport
shes so passionate about a try.
Te website is set up to demystify SUP, so there arent
any barriers for people wanting to get started, she says.
Its so simple and so much fun, and with the new website,
its all there.
Although Verigins home is Canada, the sites scope is
worldwide. Te website covers gear, disciplines, news,
special events, and safety, with links to how-to videos and
other resources, as well as personal stories and photo-

Poetry Reading At Oxygen Art Centre
Two Okanagan poets with an interest in the intersection
between the arts and environmental awareness will read
from their poems and speak about their work at Nelsons
Oxygen Art Centre on Friday, January 31 at 7:30 pm. Au-
thors and University of BC Okanagan instructors Sharon
Tesen and Nancy Homes co-edited the UBCO maga-
zine Lake: A Journal of Arts and Environment from its
inception in 2006 until the magazine suspended its print
version in 2012. Te Oxygen Art Centre is located at 320
Vernon St. (alley entrance). Te poets appearance, part of
Oxygens Presentation Series, is free ($5 donation appreci-
ated) and open to the public.
Tesen has published eight books of poems, most re-
cently Oyama Pink Shale. Tree of her titles have been
fnalists for the Governor-Generals Literary Award. Our
ability to place environment outside ourselves has al-
lowed us to think we can somehow hide it or put it away
and have it occur somewhere else, Tesen said. I suppose
what poetry can do is put life back together as a whole, to
override the taken-for-granted categories of perception,
thought, feeling and language.
Holmes has published fve collections of poetry, most
recently Te Flicker Tree: Okanagan Poems. She edited
the anthology Open Wide a Wilderness: Canadian Nature
Poems, published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press in
2009. She also organizes eco art projects in the Okanagan,
and is associate dean of research and graduate studies in
the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBCO.
