ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES Each student will prepare a brief presentation of no more than ten minutes to be delivered in class

during one of the assigned times. It is extremely important to adhere to the time limit as we have limited class time to devote to this project. Requirements for presentation: 1. A handout that will act as an outline of your speaking points. You should include citations of the sources you found most helpful in your research and any other information you consider illuminating. Be sure to make enough copies for each participant in the classthere are 34 enrolled students, plus the instructor and graduate assistant. (25%) 2. Give an oral description of the topic, thesis, and most valuable and interesting things you discovered in your research. Give the class information you would be most interested in knowing. Use notes, but be sure to address your audience directly. (25%) 3. Be creativeif you have a skill in art, speech, graphic design, stand-up comedy, by all means, use it, as long as it is appropriate and relevant to your research topic. (25%) 4. Stay within the time limit; this means you should not exceed the time limit, nor should your presentation be too short. (25%) Tips for a successful presentation: o Be sure to make your copies in advance so you are calm and prepared when class begins. o Practice giving your presentation aloud beforehand to make sure it is fewer than nine minutes (to allow for any preparation of slide shows, responding to questions, etc.). o If you get nervous, remember everyone else in the class has to talk in front of you, too. (If you want to encourage someone who is talking, you can make eye contact, smile, or nod.) How To Be A Good Audience Member (N.B. You are still being graded for general participation): o Speak at least once in every class (it is a community responsibility). You may ask a question or make a comment. o Look at the speaker and act like an audience (avoid looking down for long periods). This makes a big difference to the speaker. o Give others a chance to speak if you have already spoken more than twice. o Make comments that address the specific research presentation. Do not tell personal stories. Oral presentations will be given from 10:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during the last four class sessions, including time to conclude the course on the final day. Everyone in the class will have the opportunity to sign up for a presentation time and date on Wednesday, October 31. If you are absent that day, you may email me your time request. I must receive all requests before 4:00pm on Thursday, November 1; otherwise, I will assign you a presentation time. On 11/2 I will post a master copy of the presentation schedule to our class site on bspace, after which point, and in the interest of fairness, no scheduling changes may be made.
