Paging procedure Explanation

Overview:The paging procedure offers the network the means to start the establishment of a mobile terminating call with a given MS. The BSC is able to handle all cell identifier types within the PA !" message. The BSC re#uires parameters for calculating the Paging roup.

!n networks with P$S capability% the PA !" message can also be routed through the S S". P$S&related paging is used when paging an MS for a Circuit Switched or a Packet Switched call on a paging subchannel. The paging subgroup is calculated by the BTS. 'hen the BSC receives paging from the S S"% the BSC sends a CS&PA !" C(MMA") or a PS&PA !" C(MMA") *for packet data+ to the BTS. !f the MS does not answer within a given time limit% the MSC repeats the PA !" C(MMA") message. PAGING message:The PA !" message received from MSC includes the following data,& Message type MS identity *!MS!+ Temporary MS identity *TMS!+ *optional+ cell identifier list *optional+ channel needed *optional+ The cell identifier list identifies the cells where the PA !" message is sent. The BSC is able to handle all cell identifier types. !f no cell identifier is included% the BSC pages the mobile in all cells it controls. The channel needed information element *Any channel% S)CC-% TC-./% TC-./ or TC-.-+ is used to indicate to the MS which channel will be needed for the transaction linked to the paging procedure. The inclusion of the channel needed element depends on the MSC. PAGING COMMAND message The PA !" C(MMA") message includes the following data. message header paging group MS identity

channel needed *optional+

The BSC uses the !MS! value received in the PA !" message to calculate the mobile0s paging group and sends the PA !" C(MMA") *b+ message to the BTS. Conse#uently% the BTS uses the paging group element included in the PA !" C(MMA") message to calculate which )$1 paging block to use to transmit the PA !" $2342ST M2SSA 2 *c+ to the MS. The CCC- has two alternative configurations that are described below. The CCC- configuration affects the value of the paging group information element that is included in the PA !" C(MMA") message. The ma5imum value of the paging group element is 67. 7. BCC- 8 CCC- in a 97&frame multiframe : CCC- block. ;. The TMS! is a locally used number inside one Aocation Area which replaces the !MS! number in call setup. The TMS! improves security and ensures that any significant subscriber information% such as the !MS!% cannot be discovered during call setup.
