Safety Advice
Caution
When using the Optical Fibre Identifier, always take basic
safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock
and injury to persons. These include the following:
Avoid using the tester during an electrical stormthere
is a remote risk of electric shock by lightning.
Do not dispose of batteries in a firethey may
explode.
Disconnect all interface cables before removing the
battery cover.
Looking after your Optical Fibre Identifier
Although light and portable, the Optical Fibre Identifier is
very robust and has been designed to operate in a typical
outdoors working environment.
To ensure reliable operation, avoid:
very high or low temperaturesthe Optical Fibre
Identifier is designed to operate between -10C and
+60C. You can store the unit safely between -25C
and +70C.

Clamp
This contains the optical detectors and also clamps the cable
in position for testing.
Adaptor Head
This is attached to the Clamp Slide and is used to hold the
cable under test. There are 4 Adaptor Heads supplied:
2mm
3mm
0.25mm
0.9mm
Choose the Adaptor Head that matches the cable to be
tested. See Removing and Fitting an Adaptor Head on page
EN-6.
Clamp Slide
This is used to clamp the cable in position for testing and to
switch the tester ON and OFF. The Test Results Display is
also located on the Clamp Slide.
Clamp Slide Button
Use to open and close Clamp Slide. See Removing and
Fitting an Adaptor Head on page EN-6.
Battery Compartment
This contains a non-rechargeable PP9 9V Alkaline. See
Removing and Fitting the Battery on page EN-6 for more
information.
Test Results Display
This made up of the following:
Traffic Direction Indicators
Left-hand side Indicator: This is coloured red when
the traffic is travelling from right to left.
Right-hand side Indicator: This is coloured red when
the traffic is travelling from left to right.

Power Measurement Display
The approximate optical power, detected in the cable, is
displayed.
Modulation Frequency Signal LEDs
There are 3 types of Modulation Frequency Signal that the
Optical Fibre Identifier can detect:
270: Left-hand side LED (270Hz)
1K: Centre LED (1kHz)
2K: Right-hand side LED (2kHz)
The relevant Signal Type LED will be lit when its signal type
is detected.
Testing a Cable
The Power reading is only approximate and is for guidance
only. For example: if a cable is not connected a low reading
may be displayed because any surrounding light will be
detected in the cable. To avoid light entering the cable
during a test, we recommend that you shield the Optical
Fibre Indicator from any surrounding light source.
-1- Choose and fit an Adaptor Head that matches the
diameter of the cable to be tested.
See Removing and Fitting an Adaptor Head on page
EN-6.
-2- Position the cable into the groove on the Clamp.
-3- Push the Clamp Slide Button until it clicks and the
Clamp Side is locked in the closed position. This
automatically switches the tester ON.
The cable should be held securely.
Understanding the Results
An intermittent bleep is sounded indicating that light has
been detected. See Test Results Display on page EN-4 for
more information.

For Adaptor Head sizes see Adaptor Head on page EN-4.
Removing an Adaptor Head
-1- Choose the Adaptor Head that matches the diameter
of the cable to be tested.
-2- press on the lower part of the Clamp Slide Button to
move the Clamp Slide to the open position if
required.
-3- Slide the Adaptor Head either to the left or right edge
and remove it.
Fitting an Adaptor Head
-1- Align the replacement Adaptor Heads groove with
the Slide Clamp.
-2- Slide the Adaptor Head on the Slide Clamp so that it
centred and aligns correctly with the Clamp.
Removing and Fitting the Battery
For safety information see Safety Advice on page EN-1.
Removing the Battery
-1- Press and slide the battery compartment cover down
in the direction of the arrow until you hear a click.
-2- Lift one side of the battery compartment cover and
