Professor Nelson Lam

Professor Nelson Lam, Reader in Civil Engineering at The University of Melbourne, is an internationally recognized expert in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. In the past 20 years, he has been researching and consulting widely in this field and has published some 200 technical articles which include some 70 journal articles. His achievement in research and knowledge transfer in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics was recognized by the award of the Chapman Medal (1999) and the Warren Medal (2006) by Engineers Australia and the Best Paper Award (2004-2007) by the ISET Journal of Earthquake Technology. He served as member of the sub-committee for developing the new standard for Earthquake Actions in Australia. At University of Melbourne, he is co-ordinator of higher degree programs in civil and structural engineering and chair of examiners of master and PhD research candidatures. His early career was with Scott Wilson International as structural engineer in their Hong Kong Office throughout the 1980s and attained Britis h chartered engineer status (MICE, MIStructE) during that period. He was awarded the degree of PhD in earthquake engineering at the University of Melbourne in 1993, master degree in concrete structures at Imperial College of Science & Technology, London in 1982 and bachelor degree in civil engineering with first class honours at the University of Leeds, England in 1981.

Ir. Adjunct Prof. MC Hee

Ir Adjunct Prof. M C Hee is a practicing Structural Consulting Engineer and Principal of M C Hee& Associates. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and Master of Engineering Science (M.Eng.Sc) from The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. His expertise is in the design and construction of highrise buildings particularly in value engineering and alternative design. His philosophy is design for simplicity and buildability with a total concept approach. He has more than 40 years experience in this field, major overseas projects include the 68 story MLC tower, 40 story CML building in Sydney and 42 story 530 Collins St in Melbourne. In Malaysia, the list includes 39 story Core project, 25-story Plaza Perasang in Shah Alam, 28 story Desa Parker condominium, 25 story bank building in Damai Complex, 4 high tower blocks of condominium ranging from 20 to 28 story in Sentul. In addition he is well versed in computer modeling of high-rise buildings and his current interest is in strut and tie applications in the field of structural engineering particularly transfer girders and deep beams. He is a strong advocate of manual check methods such as 2 cycle moment distribution and for young engineers to develop the feel of how the structures respond to the loads by qualitative analysis in sketching the deflected shapes and drawing the bending moment diagrams. He was a Vice President of IEM and an active member of technical committee drafting the Malaysian National Annex of EC8.

Day 2 - 29 November 2013 0800am - 0900am Refreshments 0900am - 1030am Nelson Lam:-Equivalent Lateral Loads and Response Spectrum Analysis Theory and hand examples . M C Hee:-Practical example in computer modeling . 1030am - 1100am Morning Tea Break 1100am - 0100pm Nelson Lam:-Linear and Nonlinear pushover analysis Analysis:-theory followed by hand examples. M C HEE:-Practical example using computer modeling 0100pm 0200pm 0200pm 0330pm Lunch Nelson Lam:-Nonlinear Time History Analysis: Basic theory, followed by hand example M C Hee:-Practical example using computer modeling 0330pm 0400pm 0400pm 0450pm Afternoon Tea Break Nelson Lam:-Simplified methods for modeling overturning, collapse and ultimate behavior in inelastic range Fundamental concepts of deformation modeling and its adaptation to displacementbased seismic design of structures are first explained. Accurate methods of estimating the deflection of reinforced concrete elements in both the pre-yield (cracked) and postyield conditions (at the plastic hinges) are then presented with worked examples.
