Michelle & Ed Zvonik

While Michelles daughter was in the Air Force and stationed at Luke Air Force Base, Michelle and Ed would come down from Washington to visit and explore Arizona. They were hooked on Arizonas warm weather and desert beauty. They visited Sun City Festival several times before they retired and settled here in March 2009. Before retiring, Ed and Michelle both worked 30 years each with the Boeing Company. They were happy to leave damp Washington for sunny Arizona and neither of them have had a minute of regret. Both Ed and Michelle are active in the Motorcycle, Hiking, RV Clubs, their church and Bible study. They are passionate about volunteering within this community and help with donation collections for our Homeless Vets and partner with the Southwest Valley Blue Star Mothers by helping in their monthly packing parties for our active military. Michelle also participates in Paper Crafts & More Club and FABs, and they both are gym rats and use the fitness center. They have family in Washington and Las Vegas, and love to spoil their two grandsons, Nicolas, 6 years, and Korben, 9 months. Michelle and Ed dont have much down time and thats the way they like it and enjoy living in Festival, an active adult community!

The Strongest muscle

The heart, or cardiac muscle, is the strongest, most resilient muscle in the human body. On an average day, the heart beats 100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood. Over a 70-year lifetime, the heart beats more than 2.5 billion times.

Sadly, heart disease is the number one or number two cause of death (and most preventable) for people in the United States age 25 years, or older. Heart disease includes congestive heart failure (CHF) in which the heart is weakened and cannot pump enough blood throughout the body to meet even basic requirements. Another form of heart disease is coronary artery disease in which the blood supply to the heart muscle (myocardium) is reduced or stopped due to blockage in the arteries feeding the muscle. This can lead to death of the heart muscle and heart attack. Risk factors for heart disease include age, gender, smoking, obesity, inactivity, hypertension (high blood pressure), high blood cholesterol, and diabetes. The good news is that most of the risk factors are controllable. Exercise and/ or medications can control many risk factors and prevent development of heart disease. Aerobic, or cardiovascular, exercise is a great way to prevent heart disease. A simple daily brisk walk of 30 minutes or more can help control blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Ideally, we need aerobic exercise most days of the week for 30 minutes or more. Taking the form of brisk walking, bicycling, swimming, jogging, hiking or others, aerobic exercise needs to be done at a moderate effort to elevate the heart rate and bring about some feeling of exertion. Done consistently over time, aerobic exercise makes the heart stronger and more efficient while minimizing the risk factors for heart disease.
