PS 281- Introduction to Addiction and Recovery Final Examination

This introductory course has attempted to provide students with a foundation of knowledge regarding the nature of addiction and addictive substances and behaviors. The following questions will assist in assessing your ability to synthesize and utilize the information you have read and heard in the course. Please respond as clearly and concisely as you can. Please cite the source of your information in your response (e.g. if the text is your source, indicate (text, p. 9.3). #1) In the DSM-5 , gambling disorder is listed as an addictive disorder. There are some who suggest that the categorization of repetitive compulsive behaviors is not consistent with the specific meaning of the word addiction because there are no addictive substances involved. 1-A) What is the definition of addiction? 1-B) What facts from neuroscience and genetics are relevant to this discussion in regard to gambling? 1-C) Provide evidence that public policy does or does not demonstrate an understanding of the addictive nature of gambling?

#2) If money spent on something is an indicator of its relative value then an examination of funding for various aspects of drug control might be indicative of the values of policy makers. In 2011, $1.7 billion was spent on prevention and prevention research, $3.9 billion was spent on treatment, and nearly $10 billion was spent on enforcement and interdiction (this does not include an additional $6-10 billion on prosecution and incarceration of offenders. 2-A) Demand reduction is comprised of three types of prevention, name and define them. 2-B) One of the most successful prevention efforts has been associated with tobacco use. Discuss the each of the three types of prevention as it applies to cigarette use. How successful have these prevention efforts been in reducing the number of smokers. 2-C) Considering public policy, (laws, regulations, funding, lawsuits, case law, incarceration etc.) in regard to addiction what conclusions might be drawn about the values and beliefs of our society regarding addiction and those affected by it.
