This paper introduces focus group methodology, gives advice on group composition, running the groups, and analysing the results. Focus groups have advantages for researchers in the field of health and medicine: they do not discriminate against people who cannot read or write and they can encourage participation from people reluctant to be interviewed on their own or who feel they have nothing to say.

Focus groups are a form of grou intervie! that ca italises on communication bet!een research artici ants in order to generate data. !lthough grou intervie!s are often used simply as a <uic3 and convenient way to collect data from several people simultaneously, focus groups e=plicitly use grou interaction as part of the method. This means that instead of the researcher as3ing each person to respond to a <uestion in turn, people are encouraged to tal3 to one another: as3ing <uestions, e=changing anecdotes and commenting on each other>s e=periences and points of view.( The method is particularly useful for e=ploring people>s 3nowledge and e=periences and can be used to e=amine not only what people thin3 but how they thin3 and why they thin3 that way.
