What Is Influenza?
Influenza Is a Virus
o Usually appears in winter
o 5 20% of the population suffer from influenza annually
In the U.S., more than 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 people are
hospitalized each year
Two Types of Influenza
o Type A
Capable of mutating
Infects pigs, cats, birds and other animals as well as humans
o Type B
Only infectious to humans
Is generally less severe than Type A, but causes pandemics

The World Health Organization (WHO) Maintains Regional Labs That Test Human, Bird and Swine Samples
State Departments of Health and Agriculture Are on Active Surveillance
o Permit the implementation of control measures if needed

What Is a Pandemic?
Defined: an Epidemic of a Virus Occurring Simultaneously Around the World
o Prior pandemics have included encephalitis lethargica which occurred from 1917-1928 and
was featured in the movie Awakenings and the current HIV / AIDS crisis
o Influenza Pandemics Typically Present in Two or Three Waves

Pandemic Requirements
Isolation of an Influenza Virus from Humans from Which the General Population Has Little to No Immunity
Demonstration That the Virus Can Replicate and Cause Disease in Humans
