Chili Challenge a big success
The Chamber’s famous
Chili Challenges began as the
brainchild of Joyce Shobe,
Eye Health Professionals.
Fourteen years ago, Joyce
set the township on fire with
her idea of
pitting busi-

against

vying for
the supreme
honor of

‘Head to Head’ challenges,
which we still enjoy doing to-
day.
Community leaders
jumped into the fun by offer-
ing to become our official
judges and the rest is history.
Now everyone is taking
the challenge. From business
owners, area residents, even
sister against sister; all are
welcome and every year the
Chili Challenge gets better.
This year was no excep-
tion; 2009 brought a fun addi-
tion to the festive Challenge
when event Chairman Jim
Porritt sought involvement
from local restaurants and
persuaded them to serve up
the winning chili recipes at
their fine establishments dur-
ing the month of October.
Genisys Credit Union
made the 2009 Challenge pos-
sible with their generous spon-
sorship. As our sponsor,
Genisys supplied the Chili
Kits, allowing everyone at-
tending Barn Daze the oppor-
tunity to do their own taste test
and vote for their favorite in
the Peoples Choice award.
Genisys’ generosity also
provided excellent trophies;
tents and other needed equip-
ment to make the event pos-
sible.

Orion Township Parks and
Recreation have been great
to work with. Holding the
Chili Challenge at the annual
Barn Daze Celebration has
been great. The township co-
operation and support of the
event has been terrific and we
love being part of this family
fun event packed with activi-
ties and displays to delight the
entire family.
From its beginning, the Chili
Challenge has always been
about fun, attracting chili
chefs from across the com-
munity, setting up their little
propane stoves and turkey
fryers and vying for the rights
to be named the best Chili in
the area! This year was no
exception—it was a great

community
As we wrap up our annual mem-
bership renewal period we say
‘good-by’ to a few old friends and
welcome back many outstanding
business professionals.
The economic climate has taken
a toll on our membership base. A
few of our members have found it
necessary to close shop. Surpris-
ingly, with all the doom and gloom
in the news, businesses closing
their doors in our community are
fewer than anticipated. This is good
news for the community, indicat-
ing that even in this struggling
economy our community is hold-
ing its own.
As we head into the 2009/10
membership year, we are looking
forward to making new connec-
tions, building business know-how
and servicing the community with
optimism.
Chamber seeking
Halloween ‘goodie
bag’ items
With October comes Halloween
and with Halloween comes…. the
annual Halloween Parade in the Vil-
lage, Wednesday, Oct. 28. Once
again, the Chamber will be put to-
gether goodie bags to hand out to
adults accompanying little ones.
Here’s an opportunity to get your
information in the hands of our lo-
cal residents. We are collecting pro-
motional items, special coupons and
incentives to be distributed in the
‘goodie bags.’
How to participate? Easy, just get
100 items to the Chamber office by
Oct. 22 and we’ll take it from there.
Stuffing 100 bags with your items
and coupons, getting them to the
parade line up and handing them
out… rain or shine (or even, heaven
forbid, snow) will get those bags in
the hands of all the adults accom-
panying the children to the parade.

nity, will be hosting its 17th annual “Cel-
ebrate our Children” Gala Dinner and Auc-
tion.
This year’s Gala is back to basics with
“Black and White.”
Event facilitators are still collecting
sponsorships anddonations for the gala,
which will feature both a live and silent
auction.
“We want to hit all the price points,”
said co-chair Renee Hill. “We’re looking
for donations of gift certificates for res-
taurants, and services like massage or hair
salons or limo service, all the way up to
vacation packages.”
