Preparing for Worship February 2, 2014 fourth Sunday after epiphany

We Need You! We Need Your leadership

We Need You!
Winter Worship Series In the coming weeks, we will explore together practices that we as individuals are called to engage in so that we may strengthen and grow our church. They are practices that the church needs from you; and in profound ways, they are also critical to the practice of your own personal faith, and the stewardship of your gifts. The Church needs you, and as we seek a way to be faithful with our gifts, we find that we indeed need the Church! We Need You! We Need Your Leadership February 2 (Romans 12.1-8) We Need You! We Need Your Creativity February 9 (Psalm 150)

Theologian in Residence Visiting Scholar

Since 2001, Faith communities in Lawrence, Topeka, Baldwin City, and Kansas City along with specific departments at KU, Baker University and Washburn University have coordinated and supported acclaimed speakers for presentations and dialogue on issues of faith and questions of religion. Typically, the presenter stays for 3-4 days and involves both the academic and faith communities. The next Theologian in Residence will be William Brown, author of The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science, and the Ecology of Wonder and William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian (USA) related school in Decatur, Georgia. Brown has written extensively in response to the question, How do we interpret the Bible today in the light of science? He understands it is through science we see ourselves as an integral part of creation, not just in the world but also of the world. Four opportunities to attend presentations by Dr. Brown: 1. Sunday, Feb. 16, Ecumenical Campus Ministries (1204 Oread Avenue), 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Presentation followed by reception. 2. Monday, Feb.17, Genovese Restaurant (941 Massachusetts St), 11:45 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. (pay for yourself lunch.) 3. Monday, Feb. 17, Lawrence Jewish Community Center (917 Highland Dr.), 7:00 p.m. Presentation followed by reception. 4. Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching

Since 2007 Baptist Women in Ministry has invited churches to ask a woman to preach during February in honor of Martha Stearns Marshall, an 18th century Baptist woman who preached alongside her husband. This annual event has become a deeply significant source of joy and discovery for many churches as they have celebrated the giftedness of women in ministry. The Sunday is named for Marshall, a Separate Baptist, who preached alongside her husband Daniel, in Baptist churches in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. First Baptist Church of Lawrence has a long and proud history of supporting Gods gifts for ministry in women. We support women and men seeking to embrace Gods call in preaching, teaching, leading, praying, playing music, and the myriad other ways God works in our lives and congregations. One way we as a church celebrate Gods call on women to ministry is to open our pulpit to other women to share Gods word with us. On February 23, we welcome Aline Silva-Schreiner to share through proclamation. "Aline Silva-Schreiner is a young CREATE scholar at Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Aline has lived in the United States for 10 years now. Her intentions upon arrival from Brazil was to learn English and go to medical school. Those plans changed, however, when she began to experience Gods call upon her life to become a minister. As it was, she changed her major from Human Biology to religious studies during the second semester of her Sophomore year at Kansas University. At the same time she met the love of her life, Andy. They have been married for almost 4 years now. Aline plans to pastor and her husband plans on doing missionary work. Together they plan on working with missional churches locally and around the globe."

Remember in Prayer Stanley DeFries, after a brief return to LMH, is now back at Brandon Woods. Carl Guggisberg, recovering at LMH following gall bladder surgery.
