CBC RADIO/TV INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT LONDON BUREAU

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR JOURNALISM STUDENTS CBC News in London is seeking an intern for this years six-week spring internship. This is an unpaid position that presents an outstanding opportunity for the selected candidate to work in the frontlines of a respected international news bureau. Only applicants who are serious about a career in broadcasting should apply. PLACEMENT DATES: End of April to early June. (Precise dates to be confirmed.) Please note that a full six-week commitment is required. The dates will not be flexible. DESCRIPTION: 1. The intern must be a self-starter who seeks out and completes tasks with little supervision. The successful candidate will be someone who is willing to make him/herself useful in this busy international newsroom, and who is not afraid to ask questions. 2. The intern will complete research for CBC radio and television, suggest story ideas for As It Happens, and suggest potential interview guests for a number of shows on the CBC News Network. The intern will also accompany news crews on assignments and is expected to take orders and assist in field productions in a meaningful way. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION: The successful candidate will be responsible for all costs and arrangements for accommodation in London, as well as travel to and from London. (This includes ensuring that ALL visa requirements have been met prior to departure.) In the past the Montreal Press Club has provided a $500 award to help to offset the costs of the London Internship. SELECTION CRITERIA: The CBC is looking for a journalism student who demonstrates the following: curiosity and critical thinking; a passion for journalism and broadcasting; a quick study with a dedication to competence; and a strong work ethic. The successful candidate must meet deadlines, pay attention to detail, show dedication and initiative, and work effectively in a team. The student must also demonstrate strong written and verbal communications, and excellent PC computer skills. Please note that this is not a nine-to-five job. HOW TO APPLY: Please submit TWO copies each of: 1) A one-page letter of intent explaining why you want to work in the CBCs London Bureau and what you hope to achieve with the internship. 2) A current CV. 3) Two letters of endorsement from Concordia University faculty. (Weight is given to the strength and enthusiasm of the endorsement. Choose your referees carefully). 4) A current transcript. 5) One sample of radio and one sample of TV work in standard CD and DVD format (able to be played off a regular CD and DVD player).

Please submit all materials in a single brown envelope by noon on Monday, January 27th. A box labeled London Internship will be placed in the reception area (CJ 3.230) for your convenience. Please deposit your application there. Late submissions will not be accepted. Important Information This internship position is reserved for a current Concordia journalism student. Students who are completing the graduate diploma program and those who are at an advanced stage of the undergraduate programs are eligible to apply. The internship is a serious commitment and only serious candidates will be considered. Concordia University and the CBC reserve the right to leave the position vacant if the candidates do not meet the standards of the position. The deliberations over the choice of a successful candidate are confidential. All decisions of the examining committee are final.
