History of the Company The 2hilippine 5ational 6ank was established as a government!owned banking institution on July 44, .7.& with headquarters in the old 8asonic Temple along 3scolta, 8anila. 'owever, not much was being done to develop the industries that produced these sought!after crops since access to credit facilities was limited then. To solve this problem, 'enderson 8artin, 9ice :overnor of the 2hilippines, together with 8r. 8iguel uaderno #who later became entral 6ank governor( drafted the charter for a national bank. In +ebruary $, .7.&, 2ublic *ct 4&.4 was passed by the 2hilippine legislature providing for the establishment of the 256 to replace the small 2. million government!owned *gricultural 6ank. 256/s first head office was the 8asonic Temple along 3scolta, the then ;)all ,treet of the 2hilippines; in the bustling district of ,ta. ru- in 8anila. *n *merican, '. 2arker )illis, was its first president. ;The +irst <niversal 6ank in the country; )ith 256/s establishment, +ilipinos found a bank of their own. 256 was authori-ed to grant short and long!term loans to agriculture and industry.
