LESSON PLAN

School: Medicinska Skola Dr. Andra Jovanovi, Sabac Date: 23rd January, 2014. Time: 11h TEACHER: Katarina Stancetic and Tamara Djuric STS: Intermediate level / 15-18 / 10 MAIN LANGUAGE AIMS / LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After this lecture students will be able to express and understand the use of Modal verbs in English language. TOPIC: Modal verbs in English TEACHING MATERIALS AND AIDS: PowerPoint presentation, tests, articles. SKILLS: GRAMMAR: The use and forms of Modal verbs in English language. ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: If there happened problems with the computer, the blackboard would be us to write down the these and examples.

STAGE Introduction

TIME 2 min.

GOALS Motivating students to recognize the importance of learning how to express modal verbs in correct way.

PROCEDURE Starting with some question like, What will you do tonight?. Making the students interested in the topic that we will discuss on the lecture, and trying to talk about modal verbs through all class. Through the conversation we are trying to remember what did we learned in elementary school.

INTERACTION Asking students to answer on questions.

Warm-up activity

Pre-assessment (Supposing that the students learned in their elementary schools the basic facts about modal verbs)

Asking one or two students to explain the use of Modal verbs in English.

The beginning of the presentation: Modal Verbs

10 min.

Teaching students how to form Modal verbs, and how to use them in language.

Showing the slides from PowerPoint presentation and explaining the different uses of Modal verbs with the interesting example sentences.

After and during the presentation of modal verbs, students are asked if they understand, and if there is something which is not clear to them to ask professor. After and during the explanation, it will be discussed if everything is clearly understood. Then, the students will be asked to fill in some exercises with can or could. If everything is understood, asked the students to choose the right modal in given sentences. (This will be done orally). After finishing the test, the students are reading their answers and explaining why theyve chosen certain modal verb. Providing students with my e-mail address, for any further questions. Teaching students how to express ability, permission and prohibition.

Showing the slides from PowerPoint presentation and explaining how to differentiate Can and Could, their usage and forms.

Third part of the presentation: May and Might; Will an Would

10 min.

Teaching students how and when to use May and Might; Will and Would.

Showing the slides from PowerPoint presentation and explaining when to use these modal verbs.

Assessment

6 min.

Assessing the students through the application of their knowledge.

Giving the students a short test of 10 sentences to fill in the correct modal verbs. They work on their own.

Closure

2 min.

Rounding-up everything that is covered on the lecture, and suggesting that students should selfassess themselves at home.

Suggesting that students should go through the matter that is covered on this lecture at home, and if there is anything that is not completely understood, the

students will be advised to ask me on the next class to explain.
