FEBRUARY 2, 2014 THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

KING
Christ the King Mission Statement
The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

This feast commemorates how Jesus, as a baby, was presented to God in the Temple in Jerusalem. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a combined feast, commemorating the Jewish practice of the purification of the mother after childbirth and the presentation of the child to God in the Temple. It is also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary, and the Feast of Candlemas. It is also called the Feast of Encounter because the New Testament, represented by the baby Jesus, encountered the Old Testament, represented by Simeon and Anna. Joseph offered two pigeons in the Temple as sacrifice for the purification of Mary after her childbirth and for the presentation and redemption ceremonies performed for baby Jesus.

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord: February 1&2 General Blessing of Throats at all Masses by the Presider

Following the Mass, extra-ordinary ministers will be in communion lines, to pray the Prayer of St. Blas for individuals
Introduction: This feast commemorates how Jesus, as a baby, was presented to God in the Temple in Jerusalem. Scripture lessons: In the first reading, taken from Malachi, the prophet speaks of the Lord suddenly coming to Jerusalem to purify the lax, lazy and indifferent priests of His Temple as silver is purified by fire. Simeon saw the Infant Jesus as the fulfillment of this passage. He saw Jesus as the Lord Who has come to the Temple, "destined to be the downfall and rise of many in Israel." In the second reading, St. Paul proclaims Jesus as our Eternal High Priest of the New Covenant (Heb 2:17), Who offered Himself on the altar of Calvary, the only pure priestly sacrifice that could please God. He replaces the former priesthood. The Gospel describes how Joseph, as the head of the Holy Family of Nazareth, presented Mary and the baby Jesus in the Temple of God for the mothers purification and the Childs redemption. It also describes the Holy Familys encounter with the old prophet Simeon and the holy old widow Anna. In his prophecy, Simeon extols the divine blessings which the Messiah is bringing to Israel and to all men and predicts that Mary will play a crucial and sacrificial role in her Son's redemptive work by sharing in her Son's sufferings. Life messages: 1) Every Holy Mass in which we participate is our presentation. Although we were officially presented to God on the day of our Baptism, we present ourselves and our dear ones on the altar before God our Father through our Savior Jesus Christ at every Holy Mass. Hence, we need to live our daily lives with the awareness both that we are dedicated people, consecrated to God, and that we are obliged to lead holy lives. 2) We need the assistance of the Holy Spirit to recognize the presence of Jesus in ourselves and others: All those who, like Simeon and Anna, persevere in piety and in the service of God, no matter how insignificant their lives seem in men's eyes, become instruments whom the Holy Spirit uses to make Christ known to others. In His plan of redemption, God uses these simple souls to do much good for all mankind. In other words, the Holy Spirit employs ordinary men and women with simple faith as His instruments to bear witness to Christ, His ideals and teachings just as He used Simeon and Anna. The Holy Spirit reveals the presence of the Lord to us when we are receptive and eager to receive Him. Hence, let us be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit within us to recognize the indwelling presence of the Lord with us and in others.

Have You Noticed the New CDs in the Narthex? Week #9 - Mary: Handmaid of the Lord
Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta is known throughout the world as a woman who was totally committed to the Gospel. In this inspiring talk, she shares her insights on the Blessed Virgin Mary as a model of womanhood and perfect discipleship. She shows us that we, too, can do the will of God by saying "Yes" to the Lord in the big and little things in our lives; nothing is too insignificant.

Parishioner Comments

I rate this CD a 10! It gave me more understanding of why Mother Mary must be honored. Luke - Calgary, AB To hear Mother Teresa's own words about compassion for human life was inspiring. I have shared it with family and friends. Barbara - Lansing, MI

Thank you Diane Beyer, Shirley Fitch, Mary Ellen Clish, Father Peter, Gerry Dean, Michelle Iwinski, Judy Knox, Florence Kaminski, Carol Paulsen, Sean our seminarian visitor, Pat LeBeau, and my son Barry for picking up the bottles, delivering them to church, distributing them at Mass, and returning them for me. THE 2014 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL IS UNDERWAY TRUST IN THE FATHERS CARE
The 2014 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal begins with a mailing that many of our parishioners have received or will soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking for a pledge to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the diocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. For example, God Is Retreat, Youth Ministry, Confirmation Retreat, Catholic Youth Bibles, Living the Eucharist, and Foundations of Faith Formation for Adults. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Trust in the Fathers Care. God does provide for us. He never forgets us. His love sustains each of us. He is always giving to us. His grace is always there for us. Do we trust in the Fathers care? Christ tells us that we cannot serve two masters. Do we acknowledge Gods gifts and show him our gratitude for them? One way that we can show our gratitude is by offering our generous financial support to our parish and to our diocese and to the Church throughout the world. The gifts we give enable ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of lives. Our parish goal is $ $55,236.00. With your support, we can reach and exceed this goal. When we exceed our goal in paid pledges, we will receive 60% of the amount over goal for use in our parish. Please answer Bishop Conlons request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in 10 installments. Thank you in advance for your support.

Gimme ShelterGreat New Pro-Life Movie!

The movie is based on true events. Briefly, Gimme Shelter follows a 16 year old pregnant homeless teenager (played by Vanessa Hudgens) who escapes from her abusive mother (Rosario Dawson) and is pressured to have an abortion by her Wall Street broker father (Brendan Fraser). When she escapes from the abortion center within minutes of the procedure, she is befriended by a compassionate priest (James Earl Jones) who leads her to the support she needs at a suburban shelter for homeless teenagers. The movie features some of the actual young mothers who had lived in the shelter.

A Gift That Lives On

Remember Christ the King parish in your will. Fr. Peter J.

A note from your pastor.

On behalf of the parish finance council, parish staff and I, thank you for your gifts of generosity and sacrifice for our Christmas collection 2013. Parish families and visitors have given $40,626.65 to the parish. Your financial giving helps us to pay our bills and keep up with the expectations of our Diocese. Thank you to 34 benefactors who give specifically to our mortgage. I invite and encourage all of our 1400 households to give a small amount to the debt reduction envelope. The work and outcome of the project still benefits all parishioners who attend mass, parish activities, and parish organizations. Thank you for your generosity of $1448.24 for the snow deficit project. We still are about $4000 behind and counting. Thank you for your generosity to the Poor Household of God in the amount of over $4857. Thank you to those parish organizations and prayer group who gave a generous amount to the Sisters of Oika for their work with the victims of the typhoon. A note of thanks to parishioners, parish groups, CCW and the Prayer Community who gave towards the mission trip of Fr. Peter and Javier. The Santo Nino mass participants also donated to the victims of the typhoons. St. Joseph Table Committee has decided the collection from the table will go to the people of Washington, IL, and the Sisters of Oika. (A reasonable contribution for the Table is about 10 dollars a person.) God has been so good to us. May he reward you for your financial giving and prayers. Fr. Peter J.
