3 Elements of a Great Resume


Structure: Format: o Use standard ISB format sections o Choose between chronological or skill based sub-sections Use chronological to showcase experience across multiple companies or variety of job roles Use skill based to show variety in experience in same company Make sure that relative size of the sections justify their relative importance in your story Add an award/achievement sub-section only if strong Build a theme for extra-curricular activities Flow: o Make sure that the bullet points are correctly classified under the sections to which they belong

Provide a synthesis statement for work-experience section to highlight the key message Content: Completeness: o Make sure the top 3 qualities that make your story clearly come out in the resume Seek people with limited insight into your background to summarize your qualities post reading your resume Relevance: o Check whether every bullet points add to your profile to justify its place in the resume Review the weakest point in each section Review each section for a spoke Communication: o Ensure all bullet points are in a structured format SCR (Situation, Complication, Resolution) Quantify the impact in terms of money/time/a proxy Focus on managerial impact of technical activities done

Aesthetics: Visual Appeal: o Use readable and uniform font and size (10-12) o Avoid overuse of bold, italics o Leave adequate whitespace in the margins/between sections Bold any those few words directly relating to your story that you want the reviewer to remember Linguistic appeal: o Use simple language and short sentences o Use active verbs o Make sure spelling and grammar are correct o Check whether every bullet points add to your profile to justify its place in the resume Seek feedback from people specifically on language or if there are technical words they dont understand

Case Discussion Approach: 1. Define: Listen, take notes, ask questions to improve understanding, prioritise the facts, synthesize the facts (dont just restate) 2. Structure: Take time-ask for it, organise your thought, break the problem into discrete issues-avoid using frameworks, take suggestions and push for conclusive structure 3. Analyze: State how you would solve each discrete issue, prioritise issues, state your assumptions, ask again for relevant facts, solve with the interviewer, ask for comments and refine your solution 4. Synthesize: Develop overall recommendations, discuss trade-offs, relate back to problem statement, suggest next steps
