FCE Writing Part 1 You are studying in Britain and you have recently received a letter from an English

friend, Kate, who is interested in arranging a day trip for a group of students. Read Kates letter and the notes you have made. Then write a letter to Kate using all your notes. and the students in my class are really interested in going on a day trip. I know you went on a boat trip with your English class recently. Could you tell me what it was like and whether youd recommend it? Kate Castle and Lake Boat trips Departures at 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. daily

Planning your letter 150 words maximum gives you very little space for extras Go straight to the point! Paragraphs. Normally 3 paragraphs will be sufficient: a brief opening paragraph, the second paragraph containing the body of the letter and a final paragraph to conclude. Show the paragraphs clearly by leaving a space from the margin (indentation) This is considered VERY IMPORTANT by Cambridge and you will lose marks if you do not show paragraphs clearly. Note down the points you need to cover. Here they are: recommend the departure time, explaining why, recommend a picnic, explaining why, recommending a water sport, explaining that the discount only applies to groups of 15+. You will drop a grade if you omit any of these points, so if your letter is good enough for an A you will only get a B if you miss out a point.

Note down some fixed phrases suitable for the letter you are writing. Here the main function of the letter is to make suggestions and recommendations so try to use a variety of constructions (if I were you, Id recommend , you should, you need to) Think about the register. In this case an informal style is appropriate so you should use contractions and a friendly tone. Here is a model answer. Dear Kate Thanks for your letter. You asked me about the boat trip we went on a few weeks ago. Well, it was a really nice day out, but there are one or two things to bear in mind. First of all, theres a choice of departure times. You can leave at either 8 or 10 in the morning, but if I were you Id go for the earlier time, as the later one gets really crowded at this time of year. You can choose to have lunch in a restaurant, but Id recommend taki ng a picnic because the restaurant is quite expensive and the food isnt great. This also gives you more time by the lake. While youre there you should try canoeing its great fun. One last thing, you need to go in a group of at least 15 if you want a discount. Hope this helps and that you have a nice time. Best wishes Paolo
