Introduction: Internship and thesis

During the last year of the Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Techniques and the Bachelor of Chemistry, a substantial part of the study programme is reserved for the internship. This internship, which involves a period of 12 weeks, is organized from February until May. After completing the internship, a thesis is written. The thesis has to be defended before a professional jury at the end of the academic year. The internship supervisor is the person to be contacted at the company or research facility and is responsible for the internship and the thesis. The internship tutor supervises daily in situ. The promoter, who belongs to the teaching staff of the university college, follows the students progress and is notified whenever problems occur during the internship. The student informs the promoter of the internship progress. Regular appointments are advised. Weekly written follow-ups according to a log-book are considered to be useful.

Working on a thesis
What is the subject of your thesis

Usually the internship supervisor suggests an assignment. After meeting with the internship supervisor, the subject of the thesis is determined as accurately as possible, and a first planning is drafted. This planning will of course be readjusted during the internship itself. The readjustments always occur in concert with the internship supervisor. The promoter is always notified of these readjustments. 2.2 Practical work

The following attitudes are deemed important with regard to internship: - theoretical foreknowledge; - theoretical knowledge at the end of the internship; - comprehension of practical instruction; - interest in the work; - activity; - fixed attention; - order and discipline; - organising skills; - accuracy; - reliability; - responsibility; - team-work; - attitude, style and general social behaviour. It is also important to take the list of competencies into account, on the basis of which the student will be evaluated by the internship supervisor and/or tutor. (cf. Appendix III and IV).

2.3

Theoretical study

The theoretical study mainly involves the situating of the internship in a broader context. Useful acquired knowledge should be applied and the theoretical background of the implemented method of survey or analysis explained.

General guidelines
Size and get-up

The thesis shouldnt run to more than 50 pages, drawings, graphs, tables and appendices not included. Should the thesis consist of two or more parts, it must be stated clearly that it involves annexes. The title page of the annexes is identical to that of the main text. 3.2 Handing in the thesis

Three copies of the thesis have to handed in at the secretarys office. The student himself gives one extra copy to his internship supervisor and/or tutor. Caveat: Students who want to publish their thesis or part(s) of it, always need the consent of the person(s) responsible for the thesis/ internship at the company or research facility.

Cover

For an example of a cover, cf. Appendix II. The page following the cover is a blank. 4.2 Title page

The text on the cover is identical to the one on the title page. The numbering of the pages starts with the title page. The actual paging starts with the text. 4.3 Preface

The preface follows the inserted blank page and consists of one page. It contains announcements, acknowledgements, etc. 4.4 Abstract

The abstract allows the potential reader to determine whether or not the thesis excites his interest. The abstract comprises a concise description of: - the objective of the research; - the methods and the pieces of apparatus used; - the main conclusions and/or results. This page is numbered, but not paginated. 4.5 4.6 4.7 Table of contents List of abbreviations Text

The actual text consists of the following elements: The introduction

The introduction is not an abstract. It can be subdivided into several chapters: 1. 2. 3. 4. the thesis/ proposition; the results of the theoretical study; the objectives of the experimental research; theoretical observations, vital for the comprehension of the experiments. Description of the experiments and the methods of research

1. examined materials; 2. used products;

5

3. apparatus; 4. experimental set-up; 5. method. 4.8 Results Discussion and conclusions General conclusions Appendices

Included in the appendices are: - experimental results, such as spectra and chromatograms, used but not included in the actual text; - longer deductions of formulae or calculations which would needlessly complicate the text; - listings produced by the measuring instruments. 4.9 4.10 Bibliography Blank page following the cover

Thesis defence

Students defend their thesis at the guest and home university college. Internship defences can always be organized at the company or research centre. The same English PowerPoint presentation can be used. The presentation itself takes up to 10 minutes; the questioning by the jury approx. 20 minutes. A digital version of the presentation is supplied.

Assessment of thesis and internship

Students working on their thesis abroad, receive an ECTS-code for their thesis (practical work?) from the host university. If they do an internship, then the internship supervisors fills in an evaluation form and grades the student. The forms in appendix II and III help to reach a well-founded code. These forms are used in Belgium as well. This code will be translated into a score at the home university after presentation of the project in the home university. To help you assessing our students, we give you the marks our students (thesis done in Antwerp) got during the last 8 years.
