Chicken Day At Te Whole
Back by popular demand, Chicken Day is for anyone
interested in learning how to raise chickens for their own
use or for sale. Experts in small-scale poultry production
will explain everything you need to know. Topics include
ordering and raising chicks, nutrition, equipment for in-
door and pasture production and protection, preparing
to process and more. Tis year there will be a session on
scaling up from a small fock to larger production, and

of cross-country skiing, snow-
shoeing or just socializing. A
decadent chocolate fondue with
strawberries and other goodies
awaits you this Valentines Day
when you head for the Nordic
ski area 7 km west of Kaslo. Ski
or snowshoe 1 km to the warm-
ing hut/machine shed, or we can
whisk you there on our Jackrabbit
Express (from the highway to the
cabin and return for $5/person).
Due to limited space at our fa-
cility and cost, we must make the
fondue portion of this event by
reservation only. Te cost of the
chocolate fondue will be $10/per-
son. You have a choice of a half
hour seating between 4:30 and
6:45 pm with an opportunity to
socialize and keep warm by our
open fre while you wait with your
choice of tea or hot chocolate.
Tis will be a great opportunity
to check out our ski facility where
28 kids are learning to ski this
year. A 10 km track is set using
a portion of the Kaslo to Sandon
Rails to Trails under the recrea-
tion tenure of the Kaslo and Dis-
trict Community Forest Society.

Winter In Te Forest Festival!
Tere will be lots to do, great entertainment in the big
tent, and plenty of food. Herb Tompson and his lovely
horses return to ofer old-fashioned sleigh rides along the
edge of the forest. Te Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society
will have lots of skis in kid sizes if your child would like
to try out this easy-to-learn sport. Bring your old hock-
ey stick and jump into a game of 4 on 4 street hockey.
Or learn all about the forests fora and fauna on a nature
walk led by Sabrina Mutterer and Gillian Sanders. Try
out hot sweet and sticky maple tafy, served on a bed of
snow. Twirl some bannock on a stick and cook it over the
bonfre. Get some wilderness survival lessons in a work-
shop led by Paddy Flanagan or learn about transceivers
and avalanche rescue techniques from the Kaslo Search
& Rescue crew.
Te woodsman competition has some fun events that
anyone can enter, like the Swede sawing race, Christmas
tree toss and the dot split. Win the prize for being the frst
to boil a cofee can of water over a fre you made with
only a hunk of cedar, a hatchet and a handful of wooden
matches.
At noon catch all the action of the Human Dogsled
Races. Teams of three human huskies and one pint-sized
musher will by vying for the grand prize of $200 towards
their favourite charity. So far seven teams are entering:
Kaslo Building Supplies, Pennywise, Kaslo Home Hard-
ware, Kaslo Hotel, the Herniated Hares, the Kaslo Fire
Department and the Langham. Were still looking for one
more team!
Te entertainment lineup is terrifc: Sean Rodman of
Red Eyed Soul, Jeremy Taylor, Gary and Sonya, Bobbi-Jo
and Reid, Dawna McLelland, and Te Lichens. Kaslo and
North Kootenay Lake has some amazing talent, and you
will get to hear them all for free at Kaslos unique winter

Snapshots Of Everyday Life
In the midst of major events wars, the Great Depres-
sion, protest and internments Slocan Valley families
still took photographs of everyday life: weddings, rafing
on Slocan Lake, trapping and hunting, logging, growing
gardens, hanging out with friends. Vallican resident Rita
Moir, working on behalf of the Slocan Valley Historical
Society, is scanning these snapshots of everyday life in the
early to mid-1900s, to ensure that they are preserved. Te
archival project is funded by the Columbia Kootenay Cul-
tural Alliance.
Moir will be on hand to show a small selection of photos
from the ongoing collection on Tursday, February 20,
at Winlaw School at 3 pm during the Nelson Public Li-
brarys monthly outreach program.
Family albums are a record of daily lives, of friendships
and community formed even during the hardest of times,
of all the rituals and celebrations that continue to sustain
families and friends, says Moir. I love the photos of the
young people rafing on the lake in 1946, or the four Fo-
minof cousins as young women in 1952, or the young men
interned in 1943, posing for their photo in front of the old
Cameron house in Slocan in 1943. What these photos show
is vibrancy and strength and survival, and I love that. All
are welcome at this free slide show. For more information,
