MASTERS THESIS WORK
1. Name: Atif Naveed Khan 2.

Regn No: NUST201260718MCES64112F

2. Department/Discipline: Centre for Energy Systems/ MS (Energy Systems

Engineering)
3. Institute: Centre for Energy Systems (CES)
4. Thesis Topic: Use of Renewable Energy Technologies for Energy Self-sufficient
Community in Remote Areas
5. Brief Description/Abstract:
Pakistan is facing some of the most serious energy crises. The gap between
energy supply and demand is increasing day by day. A large number of remotely
located villages in Pakistan are without electricity. Kerosene lamps used for night
time lighting produce undesirable gases and pollutants which are harmful for the
humans and also damage the environment. Another big issue is the availability of
clean drinking water close to the villagers as women need to travel for hours to
fetch water to fulfill their family requirements. Generally remote areas as being
geographically isolated and distant from amenities have been affected by many
social & economic difficulties. Remote communities tend to have lower levels of
education because of lack of basic necessities like electricity.

Household

incomes in rural and remote areas are generally lower which results in further
economic uncertainty. Limited health care facilities, partial entertainment
facilities, employment or further education opportunities are also some of the
main issues being faced by the community.
The study would focus on the energy issues of the community and provide them
a solution that can help in improving their lifestyles. Basic energy needs
depending upon the population of the community would be analyzed as a first
step. The energy resources locally available would be assessed and based on
that assessment most viable energy technology would be recommended. The
Thesis would basically focus energy issues of these deprived communities/ areas
of Pakistan and would try to provide best possible energy solution to fulfill basic

energy needs of the community with minimal cost. Out of many deprived
communities I have chosen a village from FATA area (Khyber agency) which is
about twenty to twenty five kilometers from Peshawer towards torkham border.
The project would follow proper system sizing, designing, feasibility study,
costing, financial analysis and environmental impact etc. The same study can be
applied to any deprived community of Pakistan.
6. Level of Research Already Carried Out on the Proposed Topic:
As far as I am concerned no typical research in this area had been perused so
far in our country. The research would help to give a way how to improve the life
styles of the deprived community of Pakistan.
7. Reason/Justification for the Selection of the Topic:
The energy crisis of Pakistan is one of the main issues being discussed these
days. Many of the areas of Pakistan are energy deficient and are even without
electricity. There is an urgent need for proposing alternate sources of energy to
meet the energy requirement of the community. The research envisages using
renewable energy technologies to meet the basic energy needs of such remote
and energy deprived communities of Pakistan.
8. Objectives:
The main objective of the research/ case study is basically to help the deprived
community of Pakistan. The main objective is sub categorized to the following
sub tasks:

Collection of social, energy sources available and energy consumption

data.

Analysis of data on the basis of energy needs of the community.

Based on the analysis, the energy needs of the community would be

quantified.

Analysis of the locally available energy sources. Based on the data

collected for available energy sources, the best possible/ implementable
energy source would be suggested.

System sizing and Designing on the basis of the energy requirement and
the available energy source would be done.
Centre for Energy Systems

Actual system cost would be calculated based on the proposed system.

Economic, Social Environmental and Financial analysis would be done

based on the system design.

Mechanism sustainability, operation and maintenance of the system

would be recommended.

9. Relevance to National Needs:

Pakistan is blessed with huge potential of renewable energy resources. There is
a need of proper implementation strategy to get maximum out of these energy
resources. The research basically focuses on this area which would basically
help to solve the energy crises of the country.

10. Advantages:

The renewable energy technological solution to be proposed would have a

positive impact on social lives and basic requirements of the community. It would
help in increasing income generation, social services like education and health
care, food security and other important development benefits. It can contribute to
education by providing electrification to schools. Renewable energy can also
contribute to improve health care facilities by providing energy to refrigerate
medicine and provide power for supplying fresh water. Benefits of using
renewable energy technologies includes community development, enhanced
lighting for educational institutes, homes & mosques , water pump for drinking
and hygiene, community street lighting, improved health services, lower indoor
air pollution etc. As a result of extended lightening period every day women in
particular may be able to generate income by taking up weaving, embroidery or
other similar cottage industry chores in the evening.

11. Areas of Application:

The research/ case study can be implemented to any remote, energy deficient
and deprived community of Pakistan. The research would basically help to
improve the life styles of the deprived community.
