Learning element 1 LTE/EPS Overview
After completing this learning element, the participant should be able to: Theory: Understand the reasons driving to the LTE/EPS project. List the LTE/EPS main requirements. Discuss the future of wireless communications. Compare LTE/EPS capabilities with other mobile technologies. Review the 3GPP specification work concerning LTE/EPS. Identify the major steps in the Network Architecture Evolution towards an LTE/EPS network. Underline the LTE/EPS key features. Briefly explain the basics of the LTE Air Interface. Name the Standardisation bodies around LTE/EPS. Introduce IMT-Advanced and LTE-Advanced.

Analyze different LTE/EPS procedures: Attach, S1 Release, Detach, Service Request, Tracking Area Update, Dedicated SAE Bearer Activation and inter eNB handover. Review the LTE/EPS Authentication Procedure and the Security Keys Generation.

After completing this learning element, the participant will be able to: Theory: Understand the basics of the OFDM transmission technology. Explain different methods for Multiplexing the access with OFDM. Analyze the reasons for SC-FDMA selection in UL. Identify main blocks in the OFDM Transmitter and Receiver Architecture. Discuss about LTE/EUTRAN Subcarriers, the Frame Structure, Resource Block and the Modulation options. List the frequency allocation alternatives for LTE. Describe the basics of MIMO. Identify maximum bit rates for LTE. Distinguish different LTE UE categories.

After completing this learning element, the participant will be able to: Theory: Describe the Multiradio solution as the NSN approach to implement the Evolved Node B. List different options by NSN to implement the MME. Analyze The Flexi Network Server (NS) capacity and configuration. Identify the 2 solutions available at NSN to build up the SAE Gateway functionality.
