Ethics in Film: One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest: McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble with the law. To escape labor duties in prison, he pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once there, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. Black History Month Program: Anne Northup, Slavery & the Birth of American Cuisine In conjunction with the Oscar-nominated movie, 12 Years A Slave, learn the untold story of Solomon Northups wife, Anne. An innovator in American cuisine, Anne was an ambitious, independent and free African-American woman in 19th-century New York. Historian Greg Washington will lead a tour of the Mansion and the local neighborhood as Anne would have experienced them in the 1840's. Professor Jane Lancaster will discuss the relationship of Anne Northup and Eliza Jumel in Saratoga Springs and New York. Finally, food historian, Tonya Hopkins, will recreate some of Anne Northup's recipes for a three-course formal dinner, while leading a conversation about Anne's life and career. Rally for improvements to the GWB Bus Station project <rescheduled!>: Although work has been ongoing within the terminal since last fall, construction recently moved onto Ft. Washington Avenue, encroaching into the street and wreaking havoc with northbound and Jersey-bound traffic. Sen. Espaillat continues to push the PANYNJ for more a long-promised traffic study and for uniformed traffic control agents around the GWB, as well as increased community space within the bus station itself, but the Port Authority continues to be unresponsive. College Guide for Immigrant Parents / a Train-the-Trainer Workshop Barriers to college for children-of-immigrants are systemic in nature and not isolated personal problems related to their specific family. This workshop will help to develop a sense that, despite these barriers, college is attainable for their family; and will help them to view their fellow parents as resources to collectively address the systemic barriers. Facilitators will learn how to train parents in the basics of financial aid and college selection; create a team for support and help; visit some colleges with your children; ask for specialized help from your school or an outside organization. Trainers will receive a Guide, developed in partnership with many member community organizations, which provides immigrant parents with an easy-to-read entry point into a complicated process. The Guide addresses immigrant parents specific concerns raised in focus groups conducted across the City, and presents expert advice in the format of engaging personal stories of immigrant families together with action-oriented guidance that shows parents how to do what is recommended. The guide is written at the 6th grade reading level and will be available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Bengali, Arabic, & Haitian Creole. Mother Cabrini High School: As many of you already know, Mother Cabrini High school, a community treasure with a tradition of excellence since 1899, has announced that they will be closing their doors at the end of the academic year. Earlier this month, more than 200 members of the MCHS community, including alumnae from as far back as 1967, came out to show their support, and to figure out out they can help save their beloved school. Sen. Espaillat, in partnership with other uptown electeds, has reached out to the schools administration and is working to provide the community and MCHS students and parents the information they need to make informed choices. He has also is exploring possible rentals or co-locations to help MCHS remain open. The alumnae and current students also have started an IndieGoGo campaign to raise $100,000 in a month. ESL instructor: The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights is seeking a teacher who has experience educating adults and has an interest in social justice issues! NMCIR is a nonprofit organization that has been providing high quality, trustworthy immigration-related legal services (including consultations, citizenship and naturalization application assistance, ESL and citizenship classes) to the immigrant community for almost 30 years. The position requires advanced knowledge of ESL instruction and support for the three levels of ESL classes currently offered at NMCIR. Most of the students are of Latino background and come from predominantly Spanish-speaking households. You will work with the Program Director, Executive Director and another instructor on the management of the program. Students are all adults, including seniors. This fun and rewarding experience gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. Qualifications: BA required, Masters and/or teaching credential preferred; classroom teaching experience and training in ESL is a must. You should be available to work 15-20 hours per week, including evenings, and Saturdays. Compensation is $20/hr. Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Development Fund: In order for a cultural group to be eligible to receive discretionary City Council funding through DCA as part of the fiscal 2014 budget adoption process, all groups must submit a FY 15 CDF Application. Please note that organizations can apply for funding via CDF and Discretionary funding via their Council Member (or only one type), however in order to apply for discretionary funds via their Council

Member, they must also complete the CDF application by the deadline. Deadline: February 10, 2014

Fort Tryon Fitness Continues through the Colder Months! Join us Saturday, Tuesday & Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.
