Jigs and Fixtures Design

Chapter 2
Jigs and fixtures design
methods

1
Jig & fixture design objective

 Combination of more than one

processes
 Automation of processes
 Increase productivity and efficiency
 Minimum cost
 Meet design requirements & output
quality
2
Jig & fixture design criteria

 Must last long

 Easy to maintain
 Minimum weight

3
Main elements of jig and fixture

 Bearing
 Cam
 Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder
 Electronic controller
 Sensor
 Clamp

4
Other elements of jig and fixture

 Rod
 Spring
 Bolt
 Nut
 Plate
 Stopper

5
Drawings to be produced in jig
& fixture design

Assembly drawing (BoMs – bill of

materials)
 Subassembly drawing (one or more)
 Detail drawing of each part
 Raw material specifications (material,
raw material size, etc.)

Lecture04 (04 Feb ’08)

Problem statement
 Determine the product / workpiece
 Define the problem/s
 With clear & simple statement
Eg. Drill a 20mm dia. Hole. Is high machining
accuracy required? Where to install the jig?
 Statement examples
To drill three 20mm dia. through holes on
mild steel plate of thickness 20mm with
minimum dimensional accuracy of dia. 50µm
using a standard drilling machine.

Design needs analysis
 The pre-design analysis
 Analyse part drawing
 Analyse assembly drawing
Produce quality audit on part & assembled
component
 Pinpoint the problems
Answer the questions on who, why, how, when,
what & where
 Who will operate the tool?
What are the hole-location tolerances on the part?
Is there any obstruction that may hinder the loading
& unloading the workpiece? 9
…continue

Design needs analysis

Answer the questions on who, why, how,
when, what & where
Where are the free flow movement of scrap
chips?
What is the material and its hardness?
 Where to locate?
 Where to clamp?
 Where are the working areas?
 What is minimum machining accuracy?
What machines to be used & its min. 10
