SPECIAL FORCES CRAFT CAPSIZE


4-1. During float on, float off procedures as the submarine surfaces or dives there is a possibility that the SF craft may capsize. To prevent injury to personnel and equipment in the event of small craft capsize during float ON/float OFF the necessary actions are to be conducted in accordance with: a. b. Table 21 for capsize during float OFF; and Table 22 for capsize during float ON. Table 21 Special Forces Craft Capsize Float OFF

NOTE The normal procedure during float off is to allow the SF craft to float off as the submarine submerges. The SF craft is not connected to the Dhobi lines unless being towed.

TASK

If capsize is observed, the following is to occur: a. b. c. d. e. Order STOP MAIN MOTOR; Record position by all means; Drop a marker in the CS; Big brother started and annotated with incident; and Raise both periscopes and pass visual bearings of the capsized craft to command plot every 30 seconds.

NOTE If the small craft capsizes during float off the submarine is to continue diving and proceed to Periscope Depth (PD) with Main Motor stopped. Once the affected vessel is clear of submarine, the submarine may propel and either surface or remain dived at the discretion of the CO. If a support vessel is available, or an additional small craft is being used this vessel should be utilised to assist in the recovery. 3 4 CO/WL SF Crew Conduct capsize drill. Once the craft has been righted SF to inform submarine of state of personnel and craft, and give direction if further assistance is required. Submarine to standby and provide assistance as required.

NOTE During float on the submarine may continue to surface at the discretion of the CO. Once the affected vessel is clear of submarine, the submarine may propel. If support vessel is available, this vessel should be utilised to assist in recovery of small craft. 3 4 CO/WL SF Crew Conduct capsize drill. Once the craft has been righted SF to inform submarine of state of personnel and craft, and give direction if further assistance is required. Submarine to standby and provide assistance as required.
