Label for VitroBurgers The first requirement on the list of mandatory food information, according to Article 9 of Regulation 1169/2011

on food information, is the name of the food. According to Article 17, the name of the food shall be its legal name. In the absence of such a name, the name of the food shall be its customary name, or, if there is no customary name, a descriptive name of the food shall be provided. In Article 2, we can see that legal name means the name of a food prescribed in the Union provision applicable to it, or, in absence of such Union provision, the name provided for in the laws regulations and provisions applicable in the Member State in which the food is sold. Since VitroBurgers is a completely new product, it has no legal name. Since it is a new product, it also has no customary name (name which is accepted as the name of the food by consumers in the Member State in which that food is sold). Thus, descriptive name has to be used. Descriptive name means a name providing a description of the food, and, if necessary, of its use, which is sufficiently clear to enable consumers to know its true nature and distinguish it from other products with which it might be confused. Article 7 states that food information shall not be misleading, particularly as to the characteristics of the food and, in particular, as to its nature, identity, properties, composition, and method of manufacture or production. Since VitroBurgers are produced in a laboratory, method of manufacture/production is substantially different from the common meet production method. Thus, naming this product only MEAT, without mentioning the applied production method, would be misleading. So, the name we would suggest for the VitroBurgers is:

Laboratory cultivated beef

Taking into account that VitroMeat is made from pure muscle tissue and contains no fat tissue, we think that it would be appropriate to use the following nutrition claim:

Reduced fat

According to the Annex of the Regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods, nutrition claim Reduced [name of the nutrient] is a claim stating that the content in one or more nutrients has been reduced and it may be only be made where the reduction in content is at least 30% compared to a similar product. Claim Reduced fat needs to be supported by the experimental evidence, meaning it needs to be proven that fat content of VitroMeat is at least 30% lower than that in the regular meat.
