Theme 7: UBU Caf (Day 9)


Brief description: Food is an extremely important part of culture. Learning to cook, especially Western foods, through instructional language can promote use of English. Objectives: 1. Learn about western food and cultures. 2. Describe the cooking procedures. 3. Cook what is suggested in the recipe. 4. Select an appropriate food for food fusion and enjoy displaying it in a party. 5. Improve listening and speaking skills through Total Physical Response (TPR). End Task: Campers, in groups, cook and make fusion food for competition. Materials: 1. CWs & TMs 2. DVD of cooking. Preparation: 1. Have ingredients and utensils ready. 2. Have all the CWs ready. 3. Have DVD player ready. Procedure: Base 1: Main Course: Spaghetti Bolognaise Activities 1. Introduction Everyone introduces themselves. Explain what the base is about and its objectives. Objectives: Improve campers listening and speaking. Learn how to cook Spaghetti Bolognaise 2. Activity 1: Guess what?campers guess what is covered by nine square pieces of paper. Divide campers into two groups. Show picture to campers. Open one cover and ask each group to guess what the picture is. If they cannot guess it, play game again by revealing more until they get the answer. Rules: Say Buzz and raise hands before answering. 3. Activity 2: Cooking spaghettiwatching cooking demonstration and follow instructions. Pre-cooking: Divide campers into 2 groups Introduce utensils & ingredients to campers (TM2 & TM3). While Cooking: Distribute CW1 and let them complete Part 1. Watch DVD and follow cooking instructions. Pause DVD between each step (TM2). Repeat sentences or replay DVD if necessary. Complete Parts 2 & 3 (CW1).

Base 2: Dessert: Custard pudding Activities 1. Introduction Everyone introduces themselves. Explain what the base is about, its objectives & rules Objectives: Improve listening and speaking skills. Learn the process of cooking custard pudding. 2. Activity 1: Running dictation Pin/attach TM5, TM6 & TM 7 on the walls of the room. Divide campers into 2 groups. Assign a member to be a writer and the rest runners. Start game by letting a camper run to read and memorize information written on TM5 & TM7 before running back to their groups to tell a person to write down information on some paper. The winner is the group with the most correct information. Rules: Take turns to run. Do not take notes Have only 5 minutes for a whole game. 3. Activity 2: Making custard puddingwatching cooking demonstration on DVD and follow instructions. Pre-cooking: Divide campers into 2 groups. Distribute CW2 to each group. Assign campers to listen and repeat cooking instructions sentences in Part 1 of CW2. Watch demonstration of cooking custard pudding. Rearrange sentences into correct order. Check answers. While-cooking: Watch DVD and follow cooking instructions. Pause DVD between each step (See TM4 & TM7). Repeat sentences or replay DVD if necessary. Assign campers to complete Parts 2 & 3. Check answers. Follow up: Let 3 volunteers from each group present and describe how to make custard pudding.

Let members of each group stand in line. Give the first person of each group a set of sentences to whisper to the next person in group (TM9 & TM10). The last person in group writes down sentences and reads them aloud. 3. Activity 2: Making sandwich demo Pre making : Let campers watch DVD demo on how to make hot tuna finger sandwiches. Distribute CW3 and let them complete Part 1. Watch the DVD again. Check answers (TM8). While making: Make hot tuna finger sandwiches by following instructions (CW3). Complete CW3 (Part 2). Check answers (TM8). Follow up: Let 3 volunteers from each group present and describe how to cook hot tuna finger sandwiches.

TM2: DVD script


A DVD script: Spaghett Bolognaise Cook Spagetti noodle 1. Use a large container to boil water. 2. Add 2 3 teaspoons of salt. Boil the water, then put the spaghetti into the boiling water. 3. Stir so that the spaghetti will not stick to each other. Boil for about 20 minutes. 4. After 20 minutes, pick one spaghetti and pinch to see if it is soft or still hard. If it is still hard, continue boiling and if it is cooked, then pour cold water into the container in order to avoid over cooking and also to prevent the spaghetti from sticking to each other. Cook Spagetti sauce 1. At the same time heat the pan. Add the butter and olive oil to the pan. Use small flame. Add finely chopped garlic and onions. Let them simmer in a low fire for 2 minutes, then add the mushroom. 2. After another 2 minutes, take the pan off the fire and pour the contents into a plate and set aside. Continue to heat the pan and add 2 3 tablespoons of olive oil, fry the minced pork. If there is too much water in the pan, pour some water out. 3. The meat should be cooked in about 10-15 minutes and put it aside. 4. Now we pot the cooked garlic, onions and mushroom into the pan. Use low fire. Add the finely sliced tomatoes and let them simmer for 1-2 minutes. 5. Then add the canned tomato sauce, bay leaf, thyme powder, coriander or oregano. 6. Stir them together and finally add the cooked meat. Stir and simmer for another 2 3 minutes. Serve Spagetti Spaghett Bolognaise When it is ready, use a plate to put the cooked spaghetti on, then pour the meat sauce on top of the spaghetti and sprinkle some parmesan cheese as well as the parsley on

Preparation: (1 group) 400 gm of minced pork 400 gm of spaghetti 6-7 tablespoons of canned tomato sauce 3 fresh tomatoes 2-3 mushrooms 2 cloves of garlic onion 2 tablespoons of non-salted butter 2-3 table spoon of olive oil 1-2 bay leaf 2 teaspoons of thyme powder 2 teaspoons of coriander or oregano powder Stove Pan Knife, chopping board Dish, fork, spoon and other things depending upon teacher or organizers.

CW1Spaghetti Bolognaise
How do cook Spaghetti Bolognaise? Part I Instructions: Listen and watch the DVD. Then circle the correct verbs in the brackets. Cook Spaghetti noodle 1. Use a large container to (boil/put) water. 2. (Add/Splash) 2 3 teaspoons of salt. Boil the water until boiling point, then put the spaghetti into the boiling water. 3. (Stir/Start) so that the spaghetti will not stick to each other. Boil for about 20 minutes. 4. After 20 minutes, (slice/pick) one spaghetti and pinch if it is soft or still hard. If it is still hard continue boiling and if it is cooked, then (pour/put) cold water into the container in order to (stop/stand ) the temperature from rising and also to avoid the spaghetti from sticking to each other. Cook Spaghetti sauce 1. Meanwhile (heat/clean) the pan. Add the butter and olive oil in the pan and (pass/ add) the finely chopped garlic and onions. Let them simmer in a low fire for 2 minutes, then (snatch/add) the mushroom. 2. After another 2 minutes, (take/make) the pan off the fire and (pour/put) the content into a plate and set aside. Continue to heat the pan and (add/mix) 2 3 tablespoons of olive oil. (Cut up/Fry) the minced pork, if there is too much water in the pan, throw some water away. 3. The meat should be (cooked/looked) in about 10-15 minutes and put it aside. 4. Now we take the cooked garlic, onions and mushroom into the pan, (add/put) the finely sliced tomatoes and let them simmer for 1-2 minutes. 5. Use a double boiler to bake the custard pudding and heat the water. Make sure that the water is full in the container. Boil the milk until boiling point. Crack 4 eggs into a big bowl, add suger and vanilla extract. Stir evenly until the sugar is well distributed. Add the boiling milk into the container and stir again. Meanwhile prepare 3-4 custard pudding bowls. Butter the inside of the bowls. (Use brush). Then pour the custard pudding liquid into the bowls and leave them in the double boiler for 1520 minutes. After twenty minutes, check if the upper layer is firm. If that is so, the custard pudding is cooked. Take them out of the double boiler, and keep them in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Serve cold.

Then, we have to Then, we have to squeeze the oranges because were using 1 litter of freshly squeezed orange juice. Squeezing the orange juice (and another half there, one liter of freshly squeezed orange juice). This will make enough punch for 4-5 people.
