The ultimate Goal of N2L:
European Institute of Nanobiotech
EIN

• Excellence centre for European R&D in

nanobiotechnology
• Reference centre for industry, science,
society, politics, education & training
• Issuing calls for proposals in nanobiotech
• Benchmarks are EMBL, Fraunhofer
Gesellschaft
• Central management but local facilities

Nano2Life 26-27 May 2005, GNN Workshop, Saarbrücken

Education and Training in N2L
I- shall form the basis of future EIN curriculum
II- shall be of use for « present members/YS »
ƒ characterised by the «3i »-s:
¾ interdisciplinarity
¾ internationality
¾ integration
ƒ state-of-the-art teaching methods
ƒ shall cover all aspects (science, IPR, ethics,
gender,….
ƒ shall be flexible, not strictly located in one site

Education strategy
• Short-term
– Documenting existing resources and N2L labelling
relevant education/training forms
– Identifying gaps and needs
– Sharing resources
– Supporting relevant summer schools and
workshops
– Tutorials (bridging gaps)
• Long-term
– Development and recommendation of N2L
curriculum (masters and PhD levels)
– Establishing N2L doctoral schools (post graduate
level)
– Development of N2L own summer
Nano2Life
school

Reality vs. N2L curriculum
• Education policy/curriculum is different in
different countries/individual institutions

• N2L should act as an advisory board

recommending guidelines providing the
framework for establishing courses and
curriculum for education in
nanobiotechnology

Nano2Life 26-27 May 2005, GNN Workshop, Saarbrücken

Basic principles

• considering principles of biological systems, ranging

from molecular, through cellular to the whole body
• covering physics and chemistry of molecules of
biological importance, their assembly into
supramolecular systems and cells
• covering principles and applications of nano/micro-
fabrication and properties of nano- and microdevices.
• merging all of the above into nanobiosystems driven by
possible applications.

Nano2Life 26-27 May 2005, GNN Workshop, Saarbrücken

Structure
• Module I
– Foundations of NBT- atoms, molecules and cells (e.g. Chemistry
and Physics for Biologists; Biomolecules for Engineers and Physical Scientists;
Cell Biology for Engineers and Physical Scientists)

• Module II
– Core NBT– the tools (e.g. Microfabrication Technologies; Nanofabrication;
Characterisation. Biological Systems, imaging techniques,

• Module III
– NBT Systems- integration in systems driven by potential
benefits and applications (e.g. medical diagnostics and therapeutics; lab-on-a-
chip, micro and nanofluidics, BioMEMS,…

• Module IV
– Development/Research project

Nano2Life 26-27 May 2005, GNN Workshop, Saarbrücken

Other education forms
• all covered by same principles
• shall involve IPR, gender & ethics
education
• shall be given in English
• summer schools and workshops shall
combine theory with hands-on moments
¾preferably involve industrial participation

Nano2Life 26-27 May 2005, GNN Workshop, Saarbrücken

Other education forms
• Tutorials, at JPA and annual meetings
¾ basics of biochemistry
¾ stem cells, gene therapy and neurogenesis
¾ surface analytical tools
• E-learning
¾ e-handbook
¾ virtual laboratories
• Technical woorkshops with industry
¾ imaging techniques, TAU, planned for Autumn 2005
