Who? The space race had its origins in the missile-based arms race that occurred just after the end of the world war 2, when both the soviet union and united states captured advanced German rocket technology and personnel. What? Space race grew out of cold war between us and USSR. When? It began on august 2, 1955, when the soviet union responded to the united states announcement four days earlier of intent to launch artificial satellites for the international geophysical year, by declaring they would also launch a satellite in the hear future.
