DEFINITION OF NGOs n.d.

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is organized on a local, national or international level. Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political particpation through provision of information. Some are organized around specific issues, such as human rights, environment or health. They provide analysis and expertise, serve as early warning mechanisms and help monitor and implement international agreements. AIDS Society of the Philippines (ASP)

The AIDS Society of the Philippines is an association of individuals coming from the government, non-government agencies, and the private sector fighting against the spread of HIV and AIDS in the country. It is composed of experts and professionals from diverse fields such as health and development, infectious diseases, public health, business, and multi-media and communications. The organizations mission is to promote and support activities toward the prevention and control of the epidemic.

Health Action Information Network (HAIN) is a non-government organization that works to provide research information to support education of health and development needs in the Philippines. HAIN releases publications that cover a range of social science topics and conducts research in areas such as traditional medicine, family planning, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS. Research is normally conducted in collaboration with other non-profit organizations outside of Metro Manila. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS, or UNAIDS, is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV/AIDSepidemic. The mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to HIV and AIDS that includes preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support to those already living with the virus, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the impact of the epidemic. UNAIDS seeks to prevent the HIV/AIDS epidemic from becoming a severe pandemic. MAAAI HISTORY Treatment Care and Support for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV) Affected Families(AF) and Significant Others (SO) are the main reasons for the creation of the Mindanao Advocates Association (MAA) in September, 2008. 16 founding members of (PLHIV) in Davao City and parts of the Davao Peninsula under the care and support services of the Alliance Against Aids in Mindanao (ALAGAD Mindanao) for treatment care and support was created and launch on May .09,2009 at Episcopal Training Center in Matina, Davao City. The alliance later on inspired the creation of another organization called Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc or MAAAI. The founding members of MAAAI were brave enough to face the new challenges in their life in promoting the organization and in informing the community of the Davao Region and other areas in Mindanao about the presence and the accompanying danger of HIV and AIDS. Stigma and discrimination were often experienced by people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Davao City, eve n by the service providers, in the work place and in the colleges and universities in the city. The Mindanao Advocates Association found its first home in the office of the ALAGAD Mindanao, Inc. located at #557 Kamuning Street, Juna Subd. Matina, Davao City. MAAAI settled in this office for three years. MAAAI acquired its Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Registration on October 24, 2011 under its new name Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc (MAAAI). It later on transferred its new office at 2ndfloor of Reproductive Health and Wellness Center (RHWC) Bldg., Jacinto St., Davao City. For the past three to four years, MAAAI has been a constant recipient of the programs and activities of LGUs, LGAs, and NGOs. It actively and consistently participated in the HIV and AIDS programs of these organizations. Challenged by the need to be part of the prevention program of these organizations, more PLHIV came out in the open and gave valuable testimonies of the infection in forums and lectures. Vision: Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc. envisions a dignified, improved and sustainable quality of life for PLHIV. Mission: Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc. commits itself to: (a) prevent STI, HIV and AIDS in Mindanao; (b) empower PLHIV to respond to STI, HIV and AIDS issues/concerns in the community; and (c) strengthen the relationship between service providers and PLHIV in Mindanao. Goal: Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc. seeks to promote, protect and uphold the rights of PLHIV. Objectives: Mindanao AIDS Advocates Association, Inc. aims to: (a) secure the commitment of PLHIV to be responsible in preventing the spread of STI, HIV and AIDS; (b) promote solidarity among PLHIV, affected families and communities; and, (c) facilitate active participation and involvement of PLHIV in STI, HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support.
