Rains in the last 48 hours have wreaked havoc inundating over 30 villages and the temple town of Mantralayam and
Kurnool city, cutting off national highway, making it inaccessible. Similar is the situation within the drought-prone
district of Mahbubnagar. The Government anticipates more flooding in Krishna district and Vijayawada in particular.

Bangalore: More than 130 people have died and hundreds are being evacuated due to
heavy rains which have lashed the southern states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
over the past three days, officials said.

Hundreds of people trapped by the floodwaters were stranded on rooftops waiting to be

rescued. “Over 40,000 houses have been damaged,” an official at the Karnataka revenue
ministry said. The water level of rivers Budhabalanga, Baitarani and Brahmani is inching
towards the danger mark at a few places.

Officials said a depression over the Bay of Bengal had emptied 860mm of rainwater into Kurnool
and Mahboobnagar districts, causing the Tungabhadra and Krishna inflows to smash a 100-year-
old record. Districts reporting a 60 per cent deficit monsoon were now surplus by 100 per cent.

Hundreds of devotees were stranded in the southern pilgrim town of Mantralayam, where
the pontiff of the Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, Suchistrananda Theertha, was evacuated by
