In many ways, Romanticism was a re act i o n a g a i n st t h e Enlightenment that immediately preceded it.
We can contrast the qualities of each cultural movement almost point for point.

ENLIGHTENMENT
ROMANTICISM The focus is on the individual (unique, searching for freedom, rebelling against society).
ENLIGHTENMENT
Written by and about the educated classes (the ones who govern and advance society).
ROMANTICISM The characters are often mists and rebels (gypsies, pirates, prostitutes, etc.).
ROMANTICISM Nature reigns supreme.! ! The nature that is presented generally represents the feelings of the characters.
ENLIGHTENMENT Authors must follow predetermined rules that presumably echo Greco-Roman ideals.
ROMANTICISM The author is a special individual who creates something unique and never before seen.
ENLIGHTENMENT The setting is usually urban and indoors (the salons of the upper-middle class).
ENLIGHTENMENT The individual forms a part of society and must adhere to social rules.
ENLIGHTENMENT With the exception of myths, stories should be realistic and focused on the present.
ROMANTICISM Stories can have fantastic elements and be set in any time in the past, although there is a preference for the Middle Ages.
