The Leopard Notes:

What is the signicance of the Princes conduct in Chapter 1? How the prince reacted towards the body of the dead man as how the dead man foreshadows the gruesome death of the royal family and how they will be forgotten. He was suspicious of the reason why the man had died but his family (Malvica) reassured him that the man died for the king. The family will crumble because of themselves, he trusted the wrong person. (page 22) The price is both modern yet traditional as he does astronomy and has telescope. He has a mistress yet he is still in love with his wife and feels somewhat guilty. The signicance of the princes conduct is that it foreshadows what is going to happen later in the book. The prince acts very persistent and is sure about both his decisions and actions. (page 40) In the part where there was the dead corpse theres a clover, it symbolizes luck and wealth but its faced down. Meaning that theyre luck is going down. Also the guy is faced down meaning that the people do not respect them as dying faced down is disrespectful. On the part where they ate the food and the pudding; The pudding was erce as rst and as the pudding is shaped like a tower it symbolizes how the empire is rst erce but it will crumble. As it was eaten by the family then it means that in order to satisfy his family the empire will crumble. Everything is dysfunctional as the prince is served the pudding last as the heir of the throne is supposed to be served rst but they shouldve been served rst to the heir. Before he drank the wine he looked into Concettas eyes and said for trancredis health meaning that he foreshadowed the love triangle he is going to have. Wine means blood in christianity, meaning that after drinking the blood of the people he will disappear as it is also stated that at rst (F.D- Frabitzio Don) could be seen but then after he drank the wine it disappeared. On the dog; The princes only companion is the dog, as he talks to the dog as if he is talking to himself. But also the dog is physically similar to the prince as both the dog and the prince is mentioned to have a huge gure. As the dog destroyed the owers but the prince just praised him, so he will destroy the family but hes happy about it (?) Bendico was unhappy with Angelica and growled at her, as bendico could also represent the prince, it means that the prince is unhappy with the marriage between trancredi and Angelica and wants him to be with Concetta (back to the point where he drank the wine and cheered for Trancredi while looking at Concetta) . The dog is the last character mentioned in the novel, it means that the whole family will be a pile of dust. Beginning of chapter 2; row of four behind, almost invisible in clouds of white dust; metaphor on where the family will end up at the end. The whole kingdom according to the text is dead, baron; possibly on the future of the family. When theres water, theres skeletons in the bottom. Skeletons represent death; so therell be death under everything. the landscape in the novel, often show metaphorical aspects. For instance metaphors and etc.

The Leopard Notes:

How they traveled up and down the hill and it was a struggle, so theyre going up and down; like how life is. The symbol of the leopard on the door; on the solid but sagging it looks strong and powerful on the outside but its actually weak. It suggests that at the end itll collapse. The leopard didnt have legs so they will loose their power and since it was because of ung stones it means that theres an external inuence. Page 73; His journey to Donnafugata (one of his castles) the three places he stayed before arriving in his destination The rst day its bare-able, its just not what he expected; second day its torture its small and theres ies (a symbol for peasants), in the third day there were no ies but at the end he found thirteen ies in his granita (a dessert, so it could mean 13 unlucky events or 13 unlucky deaths in the life of the prince. The last three years of his life, he will feel the reality. The journey is a metaphor that even though the prince had gone to all these events at the end there is no happy ending and his life will get even more miserable or just grey sameness. The last sentence is saying that the real cause of his death is depression or grief. With all of this depression; he is just existing and not living his life. Meaning that he is just the empty shell of a man. Page 83; With this shower, the prince is getting cleaner and it can be a sign of rebirth. So it could mean that the rebirth of italy. The narration tells us about 4 rivers, 3 rivers dont actually touch Italy. Only the smallest river touches the river. It means that sillina does not play a big part in the unication of italy. After the unication, theres a problem in silina already as father parrone comes in before the prince nishes his bath. The prince is taking advantage of his power and so he likes the physical pleasures of life. It could also be shown where the father dried his feet. Page 92; He invited the mayors to come to his rst dinner, Don Calogero has lots of power and the prince might not be too pleased about that. When Francesco Paolo said that the mayor was coming; its as if the bad guy was coming. It seems as though the thing that the mayor was wearing evening clothes while the Prince wore day clothes (so that he wouldnt be overdressed). But he is quite appalled when he heard about what the mayor was wearing cause he doesnt want to be underdressed. This could also mean that the prince is narcissistic and smug, since he doesnt want anyone to be better dressed than him. He saw revolution in that white tie and two black tails it could mean that Don Calogero would play a big part in the revolution. The narration of the mayors dress seems quite evil, it could mean that Don Calogero could be evil. Its a demonstration of status, he has arrived as a rich guy after the revolution. The tails of his coat pointed straight to heaven in mute supplication Page 93 about Angelica; All the grace was just a show.

The Leopard Notes:

Page 96 - 98 on how Concetta is jealous of Angelica; It refers to how people in the family (both houses) blindly go into pleasures (greed; perhaps nancial) without thinking of it, as they ate the food without really tasting how good it is. Even the priest plunged in without a word meaning he is greedy. Also Angelica forgot her pretend good manners and ate the food quite barbarically. Trancredi besides eating, tries to imagine Angelica; so he is quite greedy not just in a nancial sense but in a sexual sense too. At the beginning the narrative of the food was very descriptive and made it seem very sensual. It can describe the social class; each kind of food can represent different parts of greed; nance, women and etc. If Concetta and Angelica represents their own household respectively, their love triangle foreshadows the end of the families good relationship in the future. Since the prince hates but also respects the mayor, which is quite similar to Concetta who hates but also respects Angelica. She wants to kill as much as she wants to die Angelica is enjoying the food and irting with Trancredi, while Concetta is not enjoying it at all. Concetta hopes that Trancedi can spot Angelicas aws. But Trancredi is blinded by greed (for her physical appearance and her money) so doesnt really care of her aws. This section emphasizes that greed and lust will be the reason of the end of the family. The organist is in the passage to compare how they dont eat too greedily unlike the reach people, meaning that they will be the next leaders of Italy. Again, it shows that they will destroy themselves. Page 98 Story on Trancredi; The narrator focuses on the relationship of Angelica and Trancredi. The narrator commented on the aroused feeling and how excited Angelica is about life. Also how all of the men are aroused by her. How Angelica is attracted to Trancredi. The narrative is quite sexual innuendo. How the reaction between Angelica and Concetta are different. Concetta feels disappointed, jealous, hate, outraged that Trancredi would tell a story like that. Difference in breeding (Concetta and Angelica). How Angelica is able to talk about sex when Concetta is more conservative on the topic. Page 111 - 114 What was happening in 1860? Civil War, French Colonies in Indonesia, Beginning of the end of monarchy. In the beginning when talking about the sun it is a personication to whats going on in Italy. Hes taking about the sun about to rise in metaphorical language (phoebus / the god of son, where he goes out with his chariot). Thus In general the type of language that he uses is metaphorical. The god of the sun is compared to Venus the god of beauty, because they are both Compares Don Fabrizios worries to ants because if its just one theyre small and insignicant. But when a lot swarm on you, it is annoying and it might kill you. Meaning that his worries are eating him up slowly. References back to the dead guy in the beginning.

The Leopard Notes:

Page 116: The Prince is actually interested in Angelica. He uses modern terms to compare with the princes situation so that the readers could easily understand. (Authorial Intrusion, he keeps reminding readers that its just a story and that its not really real) The prince cant fall back to religion to help him with what is about to come. The letter from Trancredi is a foreshadow of what will happen in the future. Don Fabrizio does not want to deal with Angelicas father, because he is of low class and not of loyal blood. The wife wants Trancredi to marry Concetta, since she had so much trust in Trancredi. She feels annoyed and deceived by Trancredi. The fact that the author wrote that the princess loves Trancredi, exaggerating how deceived she felt. Change in narrative voice, he uses the Trancredis letter to tell the story for a while. Trancredis Marriage to Angelica: symbolizes the revolution. Comment on the portrayal of the relationship between the Prince and his wife. See pp. 120-122 The wife is not really happy with Trancredis decision The narrative uses a lot of adjectives, showing how much power / supreme the Prince has. (Five huge ngers, his shadow has the silhouette of a mountain range) Also how the wifes small head meaning that she has less power over her husband. He rather pretends to be angry to keep peace, to be able to manipulate people around. (like crying) The last paragraph in page 121, the tone could be seen quite harsh. We could also see that hes just putting on a show (pretends to be angry) The Princess seems kind of content and proud that she has been put into her place. Her relationship with her husband matters the most. What do you make of the rabbit episode pp. 122 - 126? The top of the hill means the top of society The prince is only a symbol When your time is up, your time is up The prince tries to continue his time even though its already up. See the voting episode P129-131. Comment on the language devices used. A guy wore the same black clothes that he wore when the King died, meaning that this event is similar to the death of a monarchy. The author uses wind as a symbol of change, that everyone can feel but Don Fabrizio and his friends feel that it tastes bad The prince has to face the music and accept whats going on. only the violent impact of his feet on loose stones in the street his journey that he has to go through. The refreshments were sweet, sticky and revolting. Revolting: revolution. He faces the refreshments alone he will face the revolution alone. Clarify the section On the top of Monte Marco..... liberty ever offered them. P132-136. What is Don Ciccios complaint and how does it relate to the novels big ideas? Don Ciccio was complaining that theres a revolution. Since hes been faithful and loyal to the kingdom but with the revolution its as if it doesnt mean anything. Don Colegaro changed a vote from no to yes. So only the people in heaven know the truth.

The Leopard Notes:

The revolution or in this case voting is quite corrupt Comment on the portrait of Don Colegero and his family P138-144 Angelicas mother is very beautiful but quite dumb. Peppe Merda; Angelicas grandfather was a peasant. Don Ciccio argued that when Tancredi marries Angelica, its as if he is giving up the revolution. What do we learn about the following characters - Don Cologero, Father Pirrone and Don Fabrizio in the extract Excellency, P146-154 When father pirrone was about to bless the marriage the barometer fell; meaning that this promising marriage might not end so well. The prince, who is used to talk in sarcasm as he has a lot of power, has to clench his st to talk more formally to Don Colegero. The prince is on the way down while Don Colegero is on the way up, as it is seen that Don Colegero is more classy When the prince was acting more rudely, Father Pirrone intervined and stopped the prince from being rude. So he is the guy that makes sure that the conversation doesnt go bad. Pirrone seemed to be like some kind of father gure. The church might have less power as with the new revolution committee might take away the land from the church. Note: Before Garibaldi wanted to abolish the church.
