Introduction
This le gives the answer to the problems and how the partial credits are assigned The numbers in () is the assigned credits for this formula or calculation. If you did not show such steps, or coming up with answers from nowhere, those credits will be taken o.

Problem One
(a)
The two centripetal acceleration are the same, then
2 VA RA

2 VB RB

(10)

The mass of the two cars are the same, we can rearrange the formula into
RA = R B Plug in the numbers, we have VA VB = 1.15 VA VB

(2) (3)

(b)
The cenreipetal force is provided solely by friction. Then we have mA RA = fA together with f = A mA g A
V2

(5)

Plug the expression for friction in,and rearrange the formula, we have
2 VA RA

= A g

(5)

which implies VA =

A gRA

This formula applies for both A and B, we can just plug in the numbers and then have VA = 20.58, and VB = 17.82 (5)

Problem Two
(a)
There is no normal force between the hill and the motorcycle when the motorcycle is just able to be in contact with the ground. Therefore the centripetal force is the gravity mV R = mg cancelling the mass and rearrange the equation, v= gR = 21m/s
2

(10)

(5)

(b)
When the speed is
1 2 1 of the original force, then V = 2 V V2 R

and we also have the original centripetal acceleration equal to g, these two gives a new centripetal acceleration
V 2 R

=g

(1 V )2 2 R

1V2 4 R

1 =4 g

(5)

With this downward acceleration, we can know the apparent total weight would be
3 4 mg

(10)

Problem Three
(a)
We know the angular acceleration, is the torque, I is the moment of inertia, and is the angular acceleration = I (3) 2 and = F R (3) we also have I = 1 mR 2 combining these three, we have 2F 45 m = R = 0.2 (4) 2530 = 12kg

(b)
the angular speed after 7 seconds is 7 = t = 30 7 = 210rad/s If you want to stop the rotation in four seconds, you have to apply an angular acceleration 210 2 = (5) t = 4 = 52.5rad/s To provide this acceleration, you need to apply a force to have a torque 2 = I , which is F R = 1 2 mR 1 1 (5) F = 2 mR = 2 12 0.25 52.5 = 78.75N

(c)
If you meld a small mass on the cylinder, then moment of inertia would change 2 2 I = I + I = 1 (5) 2 mR + mR = 0.38125 then we can have the angular acceleration 450.25 2 = I =0 (5) .38125 = 29.5rad/s

Problem Four
Lets say the mass of the bridge is M , the length of the bridge to be L, the mass of the hiker is m, the normal force on the far end is N1 , and the normal force on the other end is N2 Take the far end to be the xed point rst, then we have 4 N2 L = M g 1 (10) 2 L + mg 5 L cancelling L on both sides, we have 1 4 N2 = 2 Mg + 5 mg = 2593N (10) Take the close end to be the xed point, then 1 N1 L = M g 1 2 L + mg 5 L which give us 1 N1 = 1 2 M g + 5 mg = 2002N

(10)

then the foce on the far end is 2002N , on the close end is 2593N
