From The Rectors Desk

Canon H.W. Herrmann, SSC, VI Rector Dear Parish Family and Friends: Child: Mom and Dad, do miracles still happen? Parents: Well yes, we think so. Child: Ok. Just checking. I thought so. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." Mark 10: 15 A miracle happened right here in Denton and you might have missed it. Yes, a true miracle and in this case a medical miracle. For those of you who were able to attend the Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, January 26, I announced that a long time parishioner, Bob McGee, had fallen gravely ill and had been admitted to the I.C.U. at Denton Regional Hospital. Due to a combination of respiratory, cardiac, pneumonia difficulties and a bacteria that was spreading in his intestinal tract, the team of medical folks indicated there was little, if any chance of Bob ever leaving the hospital. This past Friday, January 31, Bob was released from the hospital to go to a rehab facility and next Tuesday, he will be well enough to return home! A true miracle. When visiting Bob and bringing him the Blessed Sacrament of our Lord, while sitting on the side of his bed he said, I would not be here today if it were not for the prayers of my parish family. The Lord does here our prayers just like He did when we stopped that day of our meeting and heard a faithful band of Christians stop what they were doing and intercede for one of their own, one they love. God answers prayers and does miracles as much as any time in history. Sometimes we need to stop the busyness of our lives and use our spiritual bodies and senses to perceive His work in and among us. This is also evidence that should encourage each and every one of us here in the parish and have us persevere in prayer for others and for ourselves. We worship a living God that wants to hear from us. God had and has a plan for Bob McGee and He has one for you too. Parent: God did do a miracle with someone we know. Child: I knew He could and maybe one day He will do one in me. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." Mark 10: 15

The Curates Commentary

Father Clint Wilson, Curate Dear Saint David's Community: It is truly amazing to see just how quicklyas the saying goestime flies. It seems just like yesterday I began working here at the parish and in that time much has been accomplished, yet there is still much work to do. By Gods grace, however, I came onto the scene without having to create ministry ex nihilo, or, out of nothing. The clergy and people of St. Davids have been working hard for years in Denton to see Gods Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven, and I am in many ways the benefactor of this strong legacy and foundation. I am privileged to take what exists already and continue forming and shaping it to build sustainable structures and communities of ministry to youth, young adults, and young families. In a real sense--and this is what Im pushing towards in this update--there are two possibilities of where our efforts can go, and these are possibilities that have existed since the dawn of time. In the first two verses of the first chapter of Genesis we read the following: In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. The subsequent development of the narrative shows us the story of creation ex nihilo, or creation out of nothing. God creates for six days and then enters on the seventh day into his rest, which is not a nap, to be sure, but is more like the POTUS entering into the Oval Office after a well-orchestrated and victorious campaign. God rests in his templewhich, by the way, is where gods rested in the Ancient Near East and his rest is the inauguration of his running of the cosmos. The point that is not to be missed, however, is that he creates order out of disorder, beauty out of chaos, something out of nothing. Thanks be to God for the fact that my creative task as a curate is different in that it builds on the solid work of others! But this is the first direction of where ministry can headto create greater strength and order within a particular context. However, there is a second possibility our efforts can become postured towards if we avoid faithful diligence to do otherwise. To misquote Gerhard von Rad (an OT scholar), we always stand at the precipice of falling back into the formless void, of slipping back to the place where disorder rules and we fail to embody the call to be humans who share in Gods creative stewardship of the stuff of life. To be clear, I do not mean this about Saint Davids, but I do mean this about our own personal pursuits of holiness. How many times have you excelled in some area of your piety or faith only to see a subsequent slip back into the rhythms of the old you? How many times have you felt as though you are finally beginning to see real order and strength emerge out of the disorder and chaos, when the formless folly of your past flares up? If any of this applies to you, then here is my prayer for you this month: I pray that youby the grace of Gods Holy Spiritwill be able to enter into a new season of creative expression; of ordered and fruitful life. This will not be because you pulled yourself up by your bootstraps, but rather because you experienced the mystical and primeval pattern of the God of Genesis sweeping over your soul in such a way that you were unable to do anything except respond in a gracious and exuberant freedoma freedom from the disordering of sin and a freedom to be rightly postured towards God and his creation.

Annual Parish Meeting Report

The Parish of Saint David of Wales met on Sunday, January 26 after the combined morning liturgy of 9:30 a.m. After organizing ourselves, a brunch was offered to those gathered. The parish immediately heard the grave condition of Bob McGee, a long time parishioner, and paused to stop and offer prayers of healing and for Gods will to be accomplished. Written reports were made by each organization within the parish. The recipients of the Saint Davids Award for Mission and Ministry were announced: Lindsay Keffer and Wendy Bussell. Father Clint Wilson gave a verbal report on some of his ministry and he also had some college students, Dan Coleman and J.T. Garrett and a youth representative, Matthew Chafin, speak to the parish about some exciting things happening in those ministries. Those elected to serve at Diocesan Convention as delegates from the parish included Vern Bassett, Jan Rousey, Eddie Touraine, Jolayne LaCour and alternate Dave Mays. Those elected to three year terms on the vestry were Jesse Davis, Bonnie Ivins and Tom Sanders with the vestry officers for 2014 being, Joe Millard, Sr. Warden, Tom Swartz, Jr. Warden, Chelsey Stafki, Clerk and Tom Sanders, Treasurer. The meeting ended with the induction of the delegates and vestry and closing prayers.

The Order of Saint Luke

By David Mays

This month we would like to answer some questions about the Order. What is The Order of Saint Luke? The OSL is an ecumenical organization dedicated to the Christian Healing Ministry. Who can join the OSL? Membership is open to anyone who feels called to the healing ministry. You can join even if you need healing for yourself. Many people find themselves drawn to this ministry because they are in need of healing and feel that only through Gods help can they be healed. Do we learn to heal in OSL? No, that would be contrary to Scripture. Only God heals. What we learn is how to open ourselves up to call on God in the name of Jesus to send his spirit of healing into the person in need. Does God still perform miracles today? YES, God did not place a time limit on when miracles can occur. I have personally witnessed healing that could only have happened through Gods Grace. What is Gods purpose for the OSL and what is my part in this? God demonstrated through Jesus that He wants all mankind to be whole and Christ sent his disciples out into the world with instructions to heal the sick. James 5:14 gives instructions for what to do if anyone is sick and our role is to assist in following these direction by praying and laying on of hands. Is finding peace part of the work of the OSL? Praying for peace of mind is definitely part of the mission of the OSL. We pray that a person be made completely whole in body, mind and spirit. When we are filled with Gods spirit we will be full of the peace of God. How do I know if God is calling me to be a part of the OSL? In prayer we ask for Gods guidance for our life and seek his will for what we are to do with that life. If Gods plan for us to be a part of this ministry we will know if we open our self up to him. Does anyone get healed in the OSL? Yes, there are many documented cases of people receiving healing. It isnt necessary to be in the OSL to receive healing, it is a means of drawing together people who believe in this healing. What does healing have to do with our modern health care system? God provides many avenues to healing and our health care system is part of it. God gives to people the ability to be Doctors and Nurses so it is all part of his plan. Is the OSL faith healing? NO, anyone who claims to be a faith Healer is misled only God can heal, God uses many people as channels of his healing but they are only channels. Faith can be likened to the wire through which electricity flows, the wire cannot provide heat or light but only the electricity that flows through it can provide these results. What do medical professionals think about the OSL? Many have probably never heard of the OSL and each of them have different views, however, many medical people have come to realize that people that receive prayers and have a strong relationship with God recover better and faster than those that dont. Some have come to know the healing power of prayer as another tool to bring health to people. Doctors can cure you but only God can heal you. Is there an age limit for membership? No, if a person is mature enough to know what God is calling them to do with their life they are old enough to be a member of OSL, however they would be teamed with adult members until they were eighteen. Do you feel called by God to this ministry? If so or if you just want more information talk to any of our members.

Sanyu Babies Home Needs Drive: The WOSD, DOK, Outreach Committee, and Childrens Christian
Education are joining together to collect items needed by the Sanyu Babies Home in Kampala, Uganda. Our Sanyu Babies Home Needs Drive runs through February 14, Valentines Day! Look for the collection box in our parish hall. Sanyu Babies Home was founded in 1930 by a British missionary to provide for those infants and children who are found abandoned on the streets in gutters and trash bins and on door steps often as a result of HIV and respiratory illnesses. Sanyu Babies Home has gone from a dark, dingy and sparsely staffed building to a bright, happy, home for up to 50 infants and children through age 4 staffed by senior nurses, social workers, and teachers. Sanyu Babies Home relies on the generous gifts of supporters and missionaries who are able to carry supplies to them.

Donated items will be transported to Sanyu with Diane Stantons Uganda Christian Partners mission trip in March 2014 by our three St. Davids missionaries, Eddie and Linda Touraine and Merrily Prescott. Monetary donations will be used to purchase baby formula and feeding bottles in country as these items are too bulky to pack for the mission trip. Needed items are: baby crocs, baby clothing (newborn to 4yrs), baby caps, light weight receiving blankets, baby wipes, disposable gloves (for changing diapers), Pampers (premature & newborn size only), hand, sanitizer, sterilizing/water purification tablets (found with camping supplies), stationery (any kind), childrens toothbrushes, childrens toothpaste, Onesies. Together the WOSD, DOK, Outreach Committee, and Childrens Christian Education thank you in advance for your prayers for Sanyu Babies Home and your contributions!

Saint of the Month

George Herbert

George Herbert was born in 1593, a cousin of the Earl of Pembroke. His mother was a friend of the poet John Donne. George attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and became the Public Orator of the University, responsible for giving speeches of welcome in Latin to famous visitors, and writing letters of thanks, also in Latin, to acknowledge gifts of books for the University Library. This brought him to the attention of King James I, who granted him an annual allowance, and seemed likely to make him an ambassador. However, in 1625 the king died, and George Hebert, who had originally gone to college with the intention of becoming a priest, but had head turned by the prospect of a career at Court, determined anew to seek ordination. In 1626 he was ordained, and became vicar and then rector of the parish of Bemerton and neighboring Fugglestone, not far from Salisbury. He served faithfully as a parish priest, diligently visiting his parishioners and bringing them the sacraments when they were ill, and food and clothing when they were in want. He read Morning and Evening Prayer daily in the church, encouraging the congregation to join him when possible, and ringing the church bell before each service so that those who could not come might hear it and pause in their work to join their prayers with his. He used to go once a week to Salisbury to hear Evening Prayer sung there in the cathedral. On one occasion he was late because he

had met a man whose horse had fallen with a heavy load, and he stopped, took off his coat, and helped the man to unload the cart, get the horse back on its feet, and then reload the cart. His spontaneous generosity and good will won him the affection of his parishioners. Today, however, he is remembered chiefly for his book of poems, The Temple, which he sent shortly before his death to his friend Nicholas Ferrar, to publish if he thought them suitable. They were published after Herbert's death, and have influenced the style of other poets, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Several of them have been used as hymns, in particular "Teach me, my God and King," and "Let all the world in every corner sing." Another of his poems contains the lines: Prayer, the Church's banquet, Angel's age,God's breath in man returning to his birth,The soul in paraphrase, the heart in pilgrimage,The Christian plummet sounding heav'n and earth. Prayer Our God and King, who called your servant George Herbert from The pursuit of worldly honors to be a pastor of souls, a poet, and a priest in your temple: Give us grace, we pray, joyfully to perform the tasks you give us to do, knowing that nothing is menial or common that is done for your sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
