Location Photography Assignment (Water Orton)

Equipment Used; For this photography project I Used; A Tripod (For Long Exposure) and getting a still image without camera shake. A (Coat) to keep me warm and dry Canon D-SLR (600D) and a (18mm 55mm Lens) Photoshop CS6 (For e.g.; Editing The Exposure, Levels, Sharpness, RGB, Cropping) Suitable (Footwear) For Safety Reasons e.g. slipping over, falling over. Planning; I had planned to do my home town (Water Orton) as I know it very well and it would make it easier for me as I would be using expensive equipment, also I planned out the times of day that I would be going to photograph as I wanted to make full use of the weather conditions also with taking landscape pictures I think that it is better to make sure you go out the right time of day to get the most out of the pictures your taking also taking picture in the dark Requires and a longer shutter speed for more exposure to allow more light into the lens to light up the picture. I planned to go out when the sun was shining between the hours of 11:00am-12:30pm (Mid-Day) so that I could get some landscape shots with the sun shining through the trees and the reflection that it makes on the floor of buildings, also I went out at night between the hours of 6:00pm-7:15pm to take some night shot photos, I managed to get some pictures of a train from standing on the platform and get the train whist it was in motion Which gave the blurred lines effect of the lights on train as it was going past. Safety; For my safety I had to make sure that it was a reasonable time e.g. not too late at night and not too late in the day for taking the pictures as I had quite expensive equipment with me also I had to make sure that I used the appropriate footwear to ensure that I didnt slip or fall over.

This photo is of the place just around the corner from my house in Water Orton about a 10min walk there is a field at the back of loads of houses, I decided to go out on a sunny day just before midday to take this photo, the main subject of this picture was to capture the grass pathway and the sun shining on the floor and the tree with no leaves on it was so the sky could be seen through the branches of the tree in the background and with it being a clear day I thought that Id try and get the clouds in the image at the same time. I took this photo at the time of day I did which was about 11:30am in the morning as the sun was just coming from behind the clouds. The main of the picture was to capture the sun shining through the tree branches and the grass the pathway bending round to the right and to capture the shadow of the tree on the floor. This picture interested me as its to do with how much I could fit in the view finder and how far into the picture you can see. For this picture I had the ISO at 100 and the F-Number; DOF (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and the shutter speed at 1/200s but even though I did a few practise shots the picture looks to be over exposed that mainly down to it being a naturally bright day and with the sun shining and the clouds being white made it very hard for the image not to be over exposed. I used Photoshop CS6 and I altered the levels of the exposure to make it less so that the picture wasnt over exposed. I could improve this picture next time by using a polarising filter to help with the exposure levels this would make the picture not as over exposed with the mixture of the sun and clouds making in bright.

This picture is of the church about 5mins walk from my house I took it in Water Orton the main subject of this photo was to capture the clear blue sky in the background with the sun shining on the church roof. I framed this picture the way I did because it was mainly so that I could fit the church and the grave yard in all one image and with the shadow on the church roof from the trees was also my aim. For this picture I had the ISO at 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I had the shutter speed at 1/400s after having a few practise shots a playing around the shutter speed I managed to find the correct shutter speed so that the picture was neither under exposed or over exposed. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 but only to alter the sharpness as it was just a little out of focus but after altering it this made the picture more crisper. The light was perfect when taking this picture as there was a clear blue sky at the time and with the sun shining it made it more of a picture, the work that I did in Photoshop which was to alter the sharpness as it was a little out focus so I would say that picture looks a lot more crisper.

This picture was taken in Water Orton its the train station, the main subject of this was to capture the train station in darkness with the lights on the platform lighting up the concourse whilst aiming to make the image slightly blurry at the same time even though I did use a tripod for this picture, but the blurriness is on purpose to add to the effect of the final image. I zoomed to the frame I did for this picture because I wanted to make sure I could get the platform in as well as the lights shining. I took the picture the way I did so that I could capture the stairway the train shelter and the platform all in one image. For this picture I had the ISO at 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and the shutter speed at 25 of a second making sure that I had the camera very still but moving it ever so slightly to give to slight blur effect of the lights. For this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and altered the exposure of the lights on the stairway so that they didnt look as over exposed as before, also I used that sharpness setting to alter the sharpness of the lights being over blurred. For this picture the light was okay at the time but next time if I took the same the picture Id make sure that I kept the camera more still so that the picture didnt look over blurred with the lights and the work that I did in Photoshop with this image did work as I altered the exposure and the sharpness together to make the picture stand out more.

This picture is of the bridge that goes over The River Tame in Water Orton. The main subject of this picture was to capture all of the arches in one picture and with the water from the river going through each arch and so that I had the trees in the background and the grass all at the same time. After a trial shot of this picture I found a frame and zoom that was right for me, I mainly wanted to focus on the bridge and the bridges arches, whilst being able to capture the blue sky with the white clouds within the picture at the same time. For this picture I had ISO settings at 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and the shutter speed at 03 of a second I used this shutter speed as its a quick shutter speed setting because I wanted to capture the white of the water hitting against the pillars of the bridge which gives the white splash effect of the wave type of water hitting the pillars. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and used the tool Levels this was so that I could alter the exposure levels of the sky as it was a little over exposed so I turned it down a little and made the sky not so bright with the bright white clouds making it slightly over exposed. The light was too much when I took this picture as the it was a very bright day and with the clouds being very white it made the image look over exposed, I think next time if I was to take this picture I would make sure that I used a UV filter and maybe alter the shutter speed depending on the amount light there was on the day.

This picture is of the Train Station in Water Orton but even though I have two pictures of the same based place the reason I took this picture was because I like the way the stairway was lit up caught my eye and I like how the stairs kind of bend from left to right and the main subject of this photo was to capture the stair way in the station itself and as it was lit up at the time I took the picture and with elements of the stairs being white and the lights being white at the same time it added more to the picture. With this picture I framed to the depth I did to ensure that the main focusing point was on the stairways. For this picture I had ISO settings at 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I had the shutter speed at 1/4 of a second as the shutter speed is on a faster setting for this picture this is because the stairway is already lit up with lights so I wouldnt need to allow that much light into the lens. But if I was shooting in the dark then a use of a tripod would be highly recommended as it needs a longer shutter speed to allow more light into the lens, if the camera isnt kept completely still it means that the picture would be blurred and out of focus so using a tripod and keeping the camera completely still is the key to non-blurred pictures. Also whist using a long shutter speed it will allow more light into the lens which if photographing in very low light settings using a longer shutter speed would be very beneficial. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and used the sharpen tool just to make the picture more sharp as it was just a little out of focus. The light was perfect as the lights in the stairway lit the stairway which made it better if I was shooting in the day then it would have been less as bright as that more of natural light where as at night time this light would be artificial.

This picture is of Water Orton School after taking a practise shot of this photo at a different angle I changed the angle and this was the best angle whist making sure to frame the whole school and the trees on the left and right hand side was key. I framed this picture the way I did because I wanted to get the school and the trees both on left and right had side of the pathway was my aim. For this picture I had the ISO on 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I had the shutter speed at 1/160 of a second as the shutter speed is set on a faster setting this was because the light was very high and if I had used a longer shutter speed the picture would have been over exposed which I didnt want that to happen. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and I the tool levels as the sky was a little over exposed I turned that down and it replaced the colour that was making the photo over exposed. The light when I took this picture was a little too much which then made the sky over exposed. After editing it in Photoshop using the levels tool this replaced the area of the sky that was over exposed to start with.

This picture is of the grave yard just down the road from the River Tame where I took the picture of the bridge and the main subject of this photo was to capture the grave yard in natural sunlight whilst the sun was shining through the trees branches that were an added bonus. I framed this picture the way I did because I wanted to get the trees, bushes and the wall in the picture and the main point which was the grave yard itself. This picture interested me because the grave yard is quite a well-known thing around that pacific point of the area. For this picture I had the ISO setting on 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I used a shutter speed of 1/160 of a second having used this fast shutter speed this was because the image was already lit up with natural daylight so there was no need to use a longer shutter speed. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and altered the levels of exposure as again this picture was just slightly over exposed but after turning the levels down a bit it replaced the white balance with the sky area which was making the photo over exposed. The light was a little too much when I took this picture but what it harder was the almost direct sunlight shining through the trees branches made the exposure too much which therefore made the picture over exposed.

This picture is of the lake about a 5min walk from the river stream my main aim when taking this picture was to capture the 5 ducks on the lake through the tree and the lake all at the same time so after waiting 10-15mins I then had to capture the shot when the ducks were near enough in a straight line. I framed this picture the way I did because I wanted to take the picture of the 5 ducks on the lake and make the branches of the tree look out of focus. The main point of this picture was to capture the lake. For this picture I had the ISO settings on 100 and the DOF; (Depth OF Field) at 5.6 and I used a shutter speed of 1/200 of a second and using a quick shutter speed was very beneficial for me as it was naturally a bright day to start with. For this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and altered the levels just ever so slightly to get the exposure right as I felt it was just a little over exposed with the water having a white type of effect off the water. The was okay when I took this picture even though the sky was a little too bright but after doing a bit of editing in Photoshop this helped me a lot.

This is a photo of the River in Water Orton having focused on the main subject being the River and the sun shining on to the river bank and the ripples in the water whilst taking this shot on a sunny day that made the exposure of the sky harder for me as taking it with the sky being so white with the clouds and the sun together this is what made the photo over exposed. I zoomed to the frame I did for this picture because I wanted to show the bend in the river and with it being such a bright day at the time that helped. For this picture I had the ISO on 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) on F5.6 and I used a shutter speed of 1/200 of a second having this shutter speed it helped me to capture the ripples in the water even though the water was flowing really fast using this shutter speed really help with this. For this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and used the tool called levels and having used this setting it helped me alter the exposure levels of the sky to bring out the blueness in the sky even though the white clouds still looks a bit over exposed. If I had the chance to take this picture again I would make use of a polarising filter and try and take It using a faster shutter speed this would help me with getting the exposure right.

This is a photo of the river in Water Orton this picture was taken a lot further down the river as this picture is taken from a different angle I mainly wanted to capture the river in this picture and the sun shining on the river bank. I framed to the zoom I did for this picture as I wanted to capture the river and sun shining on the river all in one photo. For this picture I used an ISO of 100 and had the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I used a shutter speed of 1/200 having used these settings the picture still looks over exposed and the river bank looks to bright I think if I took this picture again I would use a faster shutter speed this will allow less light in to the lens which therefore wouldnt make the picture look over exposed. For this photo I used Photoshop CS6 and used the tool called levels and I also used another tool called sharpness as this picture seem a little over exposed to me so having used this two tools combined this enable me to bring the picture back to life and not make it as blurred as it seems in and using the levels setting helped me to fix the exposure levels. When I took this photo I found that I light was very bright and too much which made the picture look over exposed and over bright.

This picture is of the church in Water Orton but this time I have taken a side on angle even though I have used the same picture style type for another photo I thought after I took the first one before I thought that it would look good from a different angle. The main subject of this picture was to take the church from a different type of angle. I zoomed to the frame that I did for this picture because I mainly wanted to take a range of different angles but of the same picture this is mainly to show a variety of different camera angles and showing you how different it can look For this picture I had the ISO on 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) at F5.6 and I set the shutter speed to 1/160 of a second, when using this shutter speed it was set to a faster shutter because of how bright the lighting conditions were. With this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and using the tool levels as the picture was over exposed with the sky being over bright, having moved the bar down in the levels setting this helped to replace what was making the picture over exposed. The light was not the best when I took this picture as it was such a bright day which therefore made the picture over exposed.

This photo is of the Digby Pub In Water Orton having taken this from a corner angle this helped me with making the picture look better with this I got the road, pub and sky all in one picture and the sun shining down on the road and pub car park. I zoomed to the frame I did with this picture as the main focusing point for this picture was the pub itself. For this picture I had the ISO on 100 and the DOF; (Depth Of Field) of F5.6 and I set the shutter speed to 1/400 using these settings helped get the exposure better. Even though the exposure is For this picture I used Photoshop CS6 and used a tool called level this helped me to alter the exposure and replace what was making the photo over exposed to start with. When I took this photo it was a very bright day making the photo over exposed but that was only because of the sun shining down on the floor.

Risk Assessment
(Location Photography Assignment)

I made sure that I had my phone on me and known who to contact if the was a problem. Let someone know where and when I was going for my own safety when photographing. I made sure when I was photographing by the river bank I was wearing appropriate footwear so that I didnt slip or fall in the water. I made sure to check the surroundings when photographing as I had expensive equipment on me at the time. I made sure that if I went out to photograph later in the evening that I had someone with me for safety reason and with the equipment I was using at the time I didnt want anything to happen to me.

Evaluation
(Location Photography Assignment)

After I had planned this assignment on location photography; I then planned where I was going and what I was photographing this was meant typing each place and what I was photographing on word. I then made a map of where I went and the order I went in, this is listed in number by number above. Then after doing this I then went out at the appropriate times of day for e.g. night, mid-day, sun having these natural types of weather conditions really helped with the development of the photos I was shooting. With this location photography assignment I have learned a lot to do with camera settings and natural lighting techniques and how to make a picture with a skilful eye. If I had the chance to do a project very similar again I would ensure that I didnt make the photos over exposed with the lighting and maybe make use of a Polarising Filter to help me with the exposure of the pictures especially when photographing the sky as this can be very bright at times and using this can help bring out the natural colours of the sky.
