CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Mzumbe University, Tanzania, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, has received a research grant from the Danish Government, through the Danish ellowship Centre, in support of a research pro!ect on Enhancing Productivity, Market Access and Incomes of Small Farming Businesses in Tan ania! Potentials and "imitations of #ontract Farming$" The three year research #$%&'(&) * $%&+(&,-, studies four crops grown under contract farming in Tanzania, including sunflower in Dodoma and .ingida /egions, Cotton in Mwanza and Musoma /egions, Tobacco in Tabora region and sugarcane in Mtibwa, Morogoro" 0art of this research grant is earmarked to provide three #1- full 0h"D" scholarships tenable at Mzumbe University" The scholarship will cover a modest stipend, cost of selected specialized courses in Denmark, field work, data analysis and production of theses and !oint scientific papers in Tanzania" The grant will also sponsor up to three months of field work and supervision of four #'masters researches within the research pro!ect"

P&'4.#* The pro!ect has three sub2pro!ects P&'4.#* I I05&'+$ % #''&($ "*$' $ *!. +"2). #!"$ 1'& /) 12'6.& /..(: *!. 5'*. *$"2 '1 )5/*&."0 " ( ('6 /*&."0 )5%&"($ % This sub2pro!ect has two parts" The first aims at assessing and 3uantifying the effects of the intervention into the obstacles to increasing productivity of sunflower farming in the central part of Tanzania" The second aims at e4amining possible linkages between large scale refining companies and the .M5s and also e4amining possibilities of product upgrading in the value chain" This part will be based on a comprehensive mapping and analysis of the e4isting small and medium enterprises involved in the sunflower value chain in the .ingida and Dodoma regions" P&'4.#* II O7/#)&. 1"#*'&/ $ ')*8%&'6.& /#!.0./: 2" ( " ( 2"7')& $ *!. /)%"& +"2). #!"$ This research pro!ect will e4amine pertinent issues on land and labour with a focus on the dynamics in the 6ilombero scheme and the affected communities where land is ac3uired by out2growers and others from the sugar catchment area" 7n particular it will e4plore social and economic impacts of contract farming in the sugarcane out2grower scheme" P&'4.#* III G2'7"2 0"&-.* (, "0$#/ " ( $05"#* ' 2'#"2 .#' '0$# (.+.2'50. *: " #'05"&"*$+. /*)(, '1 *!. *'7"##' " ( #'**' +"2). #!"$ / The pro!ect will e4amine the factors determining the price differentials on the world market between tobacco and cotton from Tanzania and from other 8frican countries and the e4tent to which the contractual systems may improve the 3uality and productivity" 7t will also e4amine whether this improvement may transform into higher producer prices" urthermore, the criteria for selection of farmers * either within communities #cotton- or between communities #tobacco- * will be e4amined and the impact on the selected groups and communities will be assessed"
