Headmasters Corner
Congratulations to Otto and Harvey who have both been offered places at QEH, to Elliot who has been offered a place at Colstons and to Imogen and Seren who have been awarded places at Bristol Grammar School. These are wonderful achievements and show once again the high standard that our Year 8s are working at. Indeed you will have seen in the news this week the high regard in which our Year 7 & 8 Common Entrance syllabus is held. It is worth noting we are one of a very few number of schools that follow this syllabus in the Bristol area and that we have a long and very enviable success rate in passing such examinations. Well done to all concerned! I would like to remind you all that Sean Conway is visiting the school on 24th February at 2.00pm. this promises to be a fascinating presentation and I would like to extend a warm invitation to all parents to come and join us.

The Comedy of Errors

Years 3 to 8 and many of the staff had a riot on Monday afternoon when we were treated to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Schools version of Shakespeares The Comedy of Errors. Despite its tricky, frustratingly confusing plot with two sets of identical twins, separated at birth and re-united in strange, weird and wonderful circumstances eighteen years later, the children were able to grasp what was going on, even with the original language of the text. There were many scenes of slapstick comedy and the storyline unfurled itself amid much merriment and laughter from the children. Some Year 7 children claimed it was the best play they had EVER seen and nothing could rival it. The children were bursting to describe their favourite moments after the show and it was a pleasure to see Shakespeare being enjoyed so thoroughly by children who are so young. This is the third production of Shakespeare by the same company that we have seen in the last four years, as well as A Christmas Carol and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at Christmas. We would highly recommend them. Judith Case

Quiz Club Final at Harrow

TMS sent a team of four children to Harrow School on Friday to take part in the Finals of the Quiz Club Inter-School National Competition for General Knowledge. The team consisted of two Year 8 children, Seren Clayton and Imogen Rees; and two Year 7 children, Tom Edwards and Aditi Mehendale, who qualified for the Finals in regional heats held in November. The competition was run by the Quiz Club, an idea conceived and organised by Simon Blair (of TVs Child Genius fame). The event was attended by twelve schools, some from as far away as Tyne and Wear. Although the team was not placed in the event, they performed very well, conferring on each multiple choice question and using a range of strategic voting tactics. The event took place in the hallowed Old Speech Room at Harrow, an impressive, historic round room once familiar to such as Winston Churchill. The children were well-supported by a back-up team and parents and staff as well as school mascots. The questions were tough and the challenge was great, but our children really held their own and we hope we get another opportunity to go again next year. A huge thank you to Mr Symonds for driving in the lashing rain and dark and for the kitchen for the excellent food, which sustained us all.

World Book Day

World Book Day is on Thursday March 6th this year and we will be having another fun day here at school, dressing up and raising money for sick children through the Readathon. The Book Fair will also be arriving in school on March 7th and we look forward to all of the children buying a book of their choice and thereby enhancing their own library and the school library at the same time! I know that some of you have already started thinking about costumes for the day - remember you must dress up as a character from a book - the more creative your costume, the better!! Judith Case
