Learning Outcomes:
LO1 Understand the development contemporary dance of 1.2

To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
1.1 analyse the significant moments in the development of contemporary dance assess the essential features of contemporary dance styles

LO2 Be able to develop contemporary dance technique LO3 Be able to perform selected contemporary dance styles

In order to achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:

identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions Select and refine appropriate material for your choreography, making sure each section is planned and rehearsed effectively. select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques A range of Contemporary practitioners and techniques have been identified, researched and applied. You demonstrate a highly developed contemporary dance technique present and communicate appropriate findings You clearly assess the essential features of Contemporary dance, highlighting appropriate and significant moments that aided the development of Contemporary dance. This is put forward in an intellectual and insightful way.

In order to achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:

use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions Self-criticism of both the rehearsal process and performance has taken place. Thorough evaluation has taken place demonstrating a mature and detailed reflection. realistic improvements have been proposed to ensure success in future projects Take responsibility for managing and organising activities Independence has been demonstrated when organising extra rehearsals High level of organisational skills has been demonstrated through the management of the project. Clear planning and structure to the choreography and technical aspects of Lost Property. Demonstrate convergent/lateral/ creative thinking Innovation and creative thought have been applied to the choreography of the Lost Property dance piece. self-evaluation has taken place of the entire project from initial ideas to final performance

The purpose of this assignment is to:

Take part in a series of release technique workshops and create a dance piece using this style as a starting point. The dance will be integrated with the Drama piece based on Lost Property and will also look at practitioners such as Jose Limon and Jasmin Vardimon.
Scenario:

You are a professional dancer required to participate in a number of workshops and then use the ideas from session to create a dance piece to be performed to a public audience.
Tasks: Grading Criteria LO1 1.1,1.2

LEARNING OUTCOME 1 Understand the development of contemporary dance To answer this section you must produce a written assignment of 1,500 words. In this assignment you are to create a timeline of contemporary dance and discuss key moments within this research. You will be expected to know and highlight key practitioners

such as: Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey, Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, Lea Anderson, DV8 Physical Theatre, Jose Limon, and Christopher Bruce and Jasmin Vardimon.(You need to discuss these people and their style of dance so that the examiner knows that you understand where we are in todays dance) You must understand the history of contemporary dance and where we are today. You must also compare the styles of dance used by the practitioners you discuss and relate their style to the history of dance. LEARNING OUTCOME 2 Be able to develop contemporary dance technique This is a practical learning outcome This section requires you to engage in learning the lost property dance. This will be facilitated by the tutor to give you chance to improve on your technique through positive application of skills in sessions. I will be expecting you to create and learn the dance through regular rehearsal and show your physical skills in the reproduction of the dance. The dance piece will touch on ideas from Limon Technique, Jasmin Vardimon and DV8 Physical Theatre and you will be expected to offer ideas that are taken from watching the dance piece. LEARNING OUTCOME 3 Be able to perform selected contemporary dance styles This is a practical learning outcome In performance I will be looking for you to perform the dance piece accurately showing the correct style and feel of the dance piece. You will need to remain focussed and engaged in the piece throughout and be committed to each performance. This will be a live performance, therefore it is imperative that you are focussed through each section and strive for consistency. LEARNING OUTCOME 4 YOU HAVE TO ANSWER THIS IN DETAIL Be able to evaluate own training and performance Throughout the sessions you will be given verbal feedback from the tutor on how you can improve on your performance both through participation in the practical dance sessions and also in the dance performances. I will be expecting you to take on board all comments and work to improve on your dancing skill throughout the process. You must watch yourself back and comment on how you think the performance went and how you feel you performed the dance, You should provide clear examples from the DVD and drawing upon experiences during the rehearsal process. You must set yourself a plan to highlight how you feel you are going to improve in future. Perhaps you could relate your style of dancing to a practitioner or dancer and say how you would need to adapt to gain their professionalism. Be realistic when discussing this.
