Learning Objectives:

What will the students know/be able to do as a result of this lesson?

Students will be able to........ 1. Describe how geography impacted the development of Greece. 2. Compare and Contrast Athens and Sparta. 3. Describe the causes and effects of conflict in the Greek world.

-Give every student an equal chance to participate in game environment

Materials:
For students: (handouts, previous assignments, tests, etc.) -Completed HW Questions & Venn Diagram -PPT Guided notes -Greek War Game Handout

For teacher: (lecture notes, answer keys, overheads, video, lists of questions, etc.) -HW Answer Key -Conflict in the Greek World ppt. & notes -Greek War Game: Athens vs. Sparta (Venn Diagram)

Introduction:

How are you going to get the students to recall yesterdays lesson and how it relates to what you are doing today? How will you capture student attention?

Introduction Time Frame 9:04-9:10

Introduction Activity Description -Students will take out their HW that they should have completed for homework the night before so that I can stamp them -Students will write down todays objectives and vocab. words from the board -Vocab. Words: city-state/polis, citizen, democracy, Pericles, direct democracy

Instruction: Include time estimates for each of your activities and also plan for regular checks for understanding.
Instruction Time Frame 9:10-9:30 Instruction Activity Description -Students will get in partners with the person next to them to compare answers from the homework. -Then as a class we will go over their HW. I will ask for volunteers to share their answers to the written questions while I write their responses on the board. I will then show the class my answers for the venn diagram from the Elmo while we talk about it.

-I will pass out the guided notes sheet for the PowerPoint -Lecture on conflict in the Greek World -9:54 go on break -Finish rest of lecture if didnt before break -Students will get into partners (get to pick) or work on their own and read the outline on Sparta and Athens. After reading students will answer the questions from the packet.

9:58-10:15

Closure:

How will you tie the lesson together and reemphasize the concepts presented? How will you know if your students get it by the end of your lesson?

Closure Time Frame 10:15-10:39

Closure Activity Description -Greek War Game: Once all students have finished reading and answering the questions, the class will be divided into two groups (one half of room vs. the other half) and play the Greek War game. I will ask one of the questions from their reading and the first person from either team to raise their hand will get to answer. If they are right, the team gets to destroy a part of the other sides army by crossing off a space on the battlefield. If they are wrong, the other team gets to cross off a space. The team that completely destroys the other teams army wins the game (candy as prize). -No HW
