Objective: To highlight the basic concepts and applications of Medical Biotechnology for human welfare Expected Outcome: After completion of this paper, the students will acquire knowledge, understanding and skills about the association of microbes and non microbial ailments and their treatment strategies. Unit No. 1 An Introduction to Human Diseases 9 hrs Characteristics of Disease, Classification of Disease (Congenital / Heriditatory / Inflammatory/ Degenerative / Metabolic / Neoplastic Disease), Principles of Diagnosis (History / Physical Examination / Treatment), Diagnostic tests and procedure ( Clinical laboratory test, Tests using Radioisotopes, Endoscopy, Ultrasound, X-Ray, MRI,CT scan, PET scans, cytologic and Histologic examination of cells and tissue from patients). Unit No. 2 7 hrs Host Microorganism Interaction Microorganism entry, colonization, invasion, outcome and Prevention of Disease. Microbial Virulence factors and pathogenicity Island. Epidemiology and investigation of recent pandemics (SARS). Antimicrobial resistance and Detection (MRSA/MDRTB / Phenotyping testing of HIV type I drug susceptibility PBMC Coculture assay and recombinant virus assay). Unit No. 3 Diagnostics 11 hrs

Microbiological semi automated and automated identification systems (Vitek system / The phoenix system / The Omnilog ID system) BACTEC Blood culture system, BACTEC 460TB, Biosensors as diagnostics. Immunodetection of antigen in cells and tissues (Immunoflourescence Microscopy Hashimotos disease / Flowcytometry - CD4+ TLymphocytes in HIV) Detection and quantitation of antigen (Nehlometry C3, C4, C- reactive protein / Immunoblot analysis) Jerne plaque technique for enumerating antibody forming cells. Molecular virology (PCR for diagnosis of HSV in CNS / Quantative Realtime PCR for CMV for therapeutic protocols / Amplification and sequence analysis for HIV 1 detection of mutation and drug resistance) Neonatal screening for Phenylketonuria by Guthrie test. Unit No. 4 9 hrs Transplantation and Teratogenesis Blood screening, cross matching and transfusion. Histocompatability Testing Methods HLA typing (serology and Molecular method/ Cytotoxic (Cell Based) Antibody Screening) Embryo culture Teratogenesis stem cell culture organ culture artificial blood. Unit No. Medical Engineering and Therapeutics 9 hrs Antibody (polyclonal & monoclonal) Engineering.
