2014 NCSEA EXCELLENCE IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AWARDS

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) announces the Call for Entries for the 2014 NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Program. The purpose of the program is to recognize creative achievement and innovation in structural engineering.
ELIGIBILITY

Entry must be submitted by a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Structural Engineer (S.E.) whose practice or activity is primarily in the field of structural engineering. Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013, or must be sufficiently complete such that they clearly show the basic design of the structural system. The submittals will be judged based on the quality of the structural design portion of the project. Within the context of this awards program, design refers to the overall concept of any structure or structural system within a project. New projects, renovations, rehabilitation, structural upgrades and adaptive reuse of buildings, other structures, and bridges are eligible. Projects may be located anywhere in the world. Multiple entries from the same firm will be accepted.
CATEGORIES OF AWARDS

Awards will be presented in eight project categories: New Buildings under $10 Million New Buildings $10 Million to $30 Million New Buildings $30 Million to $100 Million New Buildings over $100 Million International Structures over $100 Million New Bridge and Transportation Structures Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation Structures Other Structures

Up to three entries in each category will be chosen to receive the NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Award. From those three winners, one will be chosen as an NCSEA Outstanding Project. Non-winning projects from last years program may be re-submitted, provided they are still eligible based on completion date.
New Building Categories

The four categories of new building projects are divided based on total construction cost of the building, exclusive of site or non-building related construction cost. Projects may include any type of building that can be occupied or used by people. This would include parking garages, airport control towers, industrial buildings, and similar structures. International buildings with a construction cost of less than $100 M should be entered into the smaller building category that applies, based on size.

International Structures over $100 M

This category is reserved for any structural project located outside the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Projects can be of any type, including building and bridge and transportation structures. Projects with a construction cost of less than $100 Million should be entered into one of the other categories, based on size and type.
New Bridge and Transportation Structures

This category includes vehicle and pedestrian bridges, highway structures, pipe or utility support spans, and similar structures. Projects may be of any span length or overall size.
Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation Structures

This category includes forensic analysis, structural renovations, seismic retrofits, adaptive re-use, rehabilitation of existing buildings or bridges, and similar projects.
Other Structures

This category includes non-building or bridge structures, such as towers, monuments, sculptures, art installations, pavilions, and similar projects.
CONSTRUCTION COST

The stated construction cost of the entry should be the approximate construction cost of the facility being entered, exclusive of site construction costs or the cost of other portions of the project. For example, a $15M building that is part of a three-building, $50M development should be submitted as a $15M project. An $8M bridge that is part of a $60M highway project should be submitted as $8M. The Foreign Building Structures, Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation and Other Projects categories will not be divided by construction cost.
JURY OF AWARDS

The selection of award recipients will be made by a distinguished Jury of Awards. There will be a minimum of five jurors. All jurors shall be structural engineers licensed as P.E.s or S.E.s.
