New Minas Shopping District Case Study

The New Minas area has become the major shopping district for much of the Annapolis Valley. Several large shopping malls are located here along with a number of chain stores and restaurant franchises. The completion of Highway 101 in the 1980s was one of the catalysts that contributed to the growth of this shopping mecca. Because it is so easy to travel along this highway, which runs the length of the valley, shoppers from Digby to Windsor flock to New Minas to do their shopping. The growth in the New Minas shopping area has had the secondary effect of leading to a significant increase in housing development in the region. One negative impact of New Minas has been that many family owned businesses in the Annapolis Valley have experienced a serious decline in business.

Miramachi River Sport Fishing Case Study

A controversy has developed over the diminishing salmon stocks on the Miramachi River in northern New Brunswick. Local guides and other residents are worried because the salmon sports fishery is one of the most important industries in this area where unemployment has always been high. Some fishers claim Aboriginal peoples who live along the river are to blame for lower fish stocks because they use large gill nets to trap the salmon on their spawning runs. Aboriginal peoples maintain that this fishery is both traditional and a treaty right. Local environmentalists point to several large pulp and paper mills along the river a more likely culprits. All these mills pump untreated waste water directly into the river.
