McCutcheon Construction Named NARI 2014 Regional Contractor of the Year Berkeley, California, February 1, 2014The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named McCutcheon Construction in Berkeley, California 2014 (Region Seven) Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) in the Entire House $500K-$1M category of its annual awards competition. Headquartered in Berkeley, McCutcheon Construction remodels homes in many of the Bay Areas, most prominent neighborhoods, including San Francisco, Piedmont, Berkeley, Marin, and Lamorinda. In its thirty-four years, the company has distinguished itself by listening, and then acting upon the unique needs of each client, McCutcheon has been a leader in adopting environmental techniques. Since long before the industry began to accept green building techniques, McCutcheon has been incorporating innovative eco-friendly construction practices to maximize the utility and beauty of its projects. Contractors from seven regions around the country vie for CotY Awards on an annual basis. National winners will be announced and honored at NARIs Evening of ExcellenceSM reception on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the New Orleans Marriott, in New Orleans. National winners will be announced via Webcast the evening of March 28, and the Webcast will be available for viewing for 30 days afterward on www.nari.org/eveningofexcellence. All projects submitted for judging were an improvement or an addition to an existing structure, with the exception of one category, Residential Exterior Specialty. Otherwise, new construction projects were not eligible. The winning entry is a 2,040 square-foot San Francisco apartmentlocated on the 18th floor of a 24-story towerthat required a complete renovation. Not only was the ceiling coated with asbestos, the baseboard heaters and other utilities barely functioned. Moreover, the original angular designs of the apartment dated back to the construction of the tower in 1968. The new design replaced all the square and straight lines of the existing apartment with sensuous curves in both walls and ceiling.

Competing projects were completed between July 1, 2012, and November 30, 2013, and were not submitted in previous NARI National contests. An impartial panel of judges, experts within the remodeling industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrants binders, which include before and after photography and project descriptions. Judging focused on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty. To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. The entries of this years competition totaled more than $72 million worth of remodeling projects. NARI members represent an elite group of the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers.
