MACE Major Atmospheric Cerenkov Experiment Telescope world's largest telescope at the highest altitude is being established at Hanle, Ladakh by ECIL. Expected completion Dec 2012. It would enable the study of high energy cosmic gamma-ray sources in the unexplored energy range. Once completed it will be the only such facility in the eastern hemisphere.

Square Kilometer Array, when built, will be worlds largest and most sensitive radio telescope It is 1.5 billion Euros project to be constructed in 2 phases and scheduled for completion in 2024. It is to be built in South Africa as well as in Australia. With 3000 dish antennas it will be 50 times more sensitive, and be able to survey the sky 10,000 times faster, than any imaging radio telescope array previously built. Uses: By picking up faint radio signals emanating from the far corners of the cosmos, it will help answer fundamental questions about the universe.

SKA

SKA project would drive developments in many technology areas, including antennas, signal transport, signal processing, computing, software and data archiving Contributors: India is an associate member while Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the U.K. are full members. India is planning to become full member which entails about 10% of the project cost. India has been involved in the planning process from the very beginning. The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) in Pune and the Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bangalore signed an agreement in 1997 to work on the radio telescope. So far, there is only one person on record who has ever been cured of HIV, Timothy Ray Brown the so-called Berlin Patient. His HIV was wiped out after getting a bone marrow transplant in 2007 for leukemia. But bone marrow transplants carry severe side effects, ruling them out as a practical solution for curing HIV for the masses.

In Feb 2013, an infant was cured of HIV in University of Mississippi, Jackson (US). Typically, the newborns with infected mothers are put on preventive treatment in the first several hours of birth, and if this fails, the baby is switched to 3-drug treatment regimen. In this case of infant

AIDS treatment

in Mississippi, the preventative treatment was not available at the rural hospital where she was born and was already showing signs of HIV at 30 hours of age. She was given the standard 3-drug cocktail sooner than other children. At 18 months, the mother took the child off the medication. With no signs of virus for the next 10 months, she was deemed functionally cured. Relevant stats: AIDS treatment to pregnant women could prevent 98% of them from passing virus to child In 2011, 330,000 children worldwide were infected with HIV (40% drop since 2001) 34.2 million people worldwide are living with HIV with about 4000 deaths/day
