Laser Rigging Guide

Congra tula tions on the purch ase of your new Laser! The Laser is a very unique boa t th a t c an a ccommoda t e many di fferent siz ed sa i lors and abi l iti es, due to it s three int erch angeable rigs. The Laser, the Radi al and the Laser 4 . 7 all use the same hull and equipment with the exc eption of the lower mas t and sa i l . We sugges t th a t you read through this guide to be tt er fami l i ariz e yourself with the par t s and rigging of your new boa t . H ardware Location:
There are a few pi e c es of h ardware th a t you wi ll need to ins t all on your new hull before continuing to rig your Laser. Loc a t e the t wo se t s of screws th a t are positioned on the de c k of the boa t ( F igure A , far right image ) . One se t of screws wi ll be forward of the daggerboard well ( F igure 1) whi le the other se t wi ll be af t of the mas t s t ep ( F igure 2) . T ip: Before repla c ing the screws be sure to dip them into a si l icon based sealant to allow for a wa t er tight and se cure f it .

1 . In the del ivery k it loc a t e the bullseye fa irlead and the c lam c lea t . Unscrew the t wo screws loc a t ed by the mas t s t ep ( F igure 3) . Al ign the bullseye fa irlead over the t wo holes and screw into pla c e ( F igure 4) .

H ardware Installation: Laser Pro Models


1 . From the del ivery k it loc a t e the 2 , 16mm fork head bloc ks and base. Unscrew the t wo screws loc a t ed by the mas t s t ep . Al ign the bloc k base over the holes and screw into pla c e ( F igure 9) . Att a ch the fork head bloc ks to the base using the provided pins and rings ( F igure 10) . Reminder: Before repla c ing the screws be sure to dip them into a si l icon based sealant to allow for a wa t er tight and se cure f it . 2 . In the del ivery k it loc a t e the c lea t base with c lea t s. Unscrew the t wo screws loc a t ed by the daggerboard well . Al ign the c lea t base over the t wo holes and screw into pla c e ( F igure 11) . Ma ke sure th a t the shor t er of the me t al fa irleads are fa c ing the bow. When look ing a t the c lea t base from the side, the c lea t s should be angled down towards the bow ( F igure 12) . Reminder: Before repla c ing the screws be sure to dip them into a si l icon based sealant to allow for a wa t er tight and se cure f it . F igure 6 3 . 3 . Ma ke a loop in the por t side of the l ine as i f you were going to ti e a bowl ine ( F igure 17) . Keeping in mind th a t the free end of the por t side l ine wi ll be c lea t ed off . Ta ke the s t arboard end of the l ine and comple t e the bowl ine by going through the por t loop ( F igure 18) . 4 . Continue the t a i l end of the por t side l ine through the c lea t and ti e off with a bowl ine h andle ( F igure 19) .

Rigging the Mast: Standard and Pro Models


1 . Loc a t e the sa i l , ba tt ens, boom , upper and lower mas t from your del ivery k it . Remove your sa i l from the sa i l bag and h ave the three ba tt ens h andy. Your ba tt ens should comprise of : Two long and one shor t ( F igure 24) . Stepping the Mast 1 . Ma ke sure the bow of the boa t is pointing into the wind and th a t the ir are N o Overhead Electrical Wires in the Area! Also ma ke sure th a t the mas t s t ep hole and mas t butt are perfe c t ly c lean; any sand or dir t in the mas t s t ep wi ll grind into the gel coa t and c an damage the mas t s t ep . 2 . Pla c e the mas t butt aga ins t a fla t sol id obj e c t . By pla c ing a towel or pi e c e of c ardboard on the ground it wi ll help prolong the l i fe of the plas tic mas t butt . 3 . Li f t the mas t from the head of the sa i l and wal k toward the mas t butt , ra ising the mas t h and over h and unti l ver tic al . 4 . Ma ke sure th a t the goosene c k is fa c ing the s t ern of the boa t before l i f ting . 5 . Keeping your h ands a good dis t anc e apar t , l i f t the mas t over the mas t s t ep hole ( F igure D) . 6 . Allow the mas t to sl ide into the s t ep . Do not drop the mas t into the s t ep for it wi ll c ause damage! 7 . Remove any wraps in the sa i l sleeve. Goosene c k P in F igure 27 F igure 28

T ip: When un folding sa i l , ma ke sure th a t the area is free of sh arp obj e c t s th a t could damage the sa i l! To ensure the ba tt en tips do not fall off inside the poc ke t when the ba tt ens are removed, it is sugges t ed th a t you t ape the ba tt en tips.

2 . Un fold the sa i l . S t ar ting from the head of the sa i l loc a t e the top ba tt en poc ke t . Inser t the smalles t of the three ba tt ens into the top ba tt en poc ke t ( F igure 25) . 3 . When inser ting the ba tt en into the poc ke t , you wi ll be applying pressure aga ins t elas tic loc a t ed in the end of the poc ke t . As you press aga ins t the elas tic , sl ide the ba tt en in and down so th a t the tip res t s in the c losed end of the poc ke t ( F igure 26) . To remove : press the end into the elas tic , and sl ide the tip to the open end of the poc ke t . 4 . Continue down the sa i l , inser ting the t wo rema ining ba tt ens. Not e : Before folding the sa i l ma ke sure to remove the ba tt ens.

5 . Sl ide the top se c tion of the mas t into the lower se c tion unti l the top se c tions plas tic collar is snug aga ins t the aluminum of the lower se c tion . 6 . Sl ide the sleeve of the sa i l over the mas t , al igning the cunningh am gromme t with the goosene c k and removing any t wis t s in the sleeve ( F igure D) . Continue the s t rap around the boom and se cure the Vel cro . Thread the Vel cro s t rap with the Laser logo through the c lew gromme t and se cure.

Lead the l ine through the upper bloc k of the lower vang bloc k / c lea t assembly and comple t e the purch ase by tying the t a i l end of the l ine to the be c ke t of the small double bloc k with a s topper k not followed by a h alf hit ch ( F igure 54) . 6 . 3 . Use the provided pin and ring to a tt a ch the larger of the t wo vang bloc ks to the vang t ang , loc a t ed below the goosene c k on the mas t ( F igure 44) . Brummel Hooks 4 . Sl ide the ti ller with ext ension under the t raveler l ine. Al ign the pint les over the gudgeons and press down to se cure ( F igure 81) . To release press on the rudder l i f t s top and l i f t the rudder head s t ra ight up .

Attaching the Rudder When rigging the rudder it is impor t ant to pla c e the ti ller and ext ension undernea th the t raveler l ine.

4 . Ta ke the free ends of the shoc kcord and put them through the shoc kcord loop . Pull unti l tight around the edge of the board ( F igure 72) . 5 . When you are ready to launch , pla c e the daggerboard in the t run k with the shoc kcord fa c ing towards the bow. Ta ke one end of the daggerboard re t a ining l ine around the s t arboard side of the mas t and through the bow h andle. Ta ke the other end of the l ine around the por t side and conne c t the t wo brummel hooks. T ip: For the Laser Pro model versions it is re commended th a t you lead both ends of the daggerboard re t a iner to one side of the mas t and hook the brummels around the bow h andle. To keep the daggerboard re t a iner out of the way of the other l ines on the de c k it is sugges t ed to ti e the mas t ti e in around the daggerboard re t a iner ( F igure 73) .

5 . The rudder downh aul l ine loc ks the rudder in the down position . Before launching be sure th a t the l ine is loose so th a t the rudder c an rema in in the upright position . When you are ready to sa i l , pull on the rudder downh aul and the rudder blade wi ll lower into the wa t er. T i e off the l ine to the c lea t on the ti ller whi le sa i l ing ( F igure 82) . In order to par tic ipa t e in Laser rega tt as you wi ll need to apply the numbers to your sa i l for easy identi f ic a tion . The sa i l number corresponds to the identi f ic a tion number th a t is imprint ed on the s t arboard side of the t ransom . The identi f ic a tion number wi ll be a seri es of le tt ers and numbers. The f irs t three le tt ers are the manufa c turers code followed by an additional le tt er th a t wi ll s t and for the f irs t t wo digit s of the sa i l number. The le tt er A s t ands for the number 10 , and the progression logic ally continues with B = 11 , C = 12 e t c ... These f irs t t wo numbers wi ll be represent ed on the sa i l with the red numbers. The following four digit s are the rema inder of the sa i l number. Use the blue or bla c k sa i l numbers for the rema ining 4 digit s. For example, i f your hull identi f ic a tion number is OQTH4714B506 , your sa i l number would be 174714 . The rema inder of the numbers and le tt ers in the identi f ic a tion number wi ll s t and for the da t e in which the boa t was manufa c tured.

Sail Care: It is impor t ant to t a ke proper c are of your sa i l in order for it to las t longer and perform to the s t andard th a t they were designed for. Follow these simple tips to help ext end the l i fe of your sa i l . 1 . I f you are sa i l ing in sal t wa t er, be sure to rinse out your sa i l with fresh wa t er af t er every use. Da cron sa i ls do not absorb wa t er or sal t but the sal t wi ll dry on the sa i l ma k ing them s ti ff . The sal t in humid wea ther c an a tt ra c t mois ture th a t may lead to mi ldew on your sa i l . 2 . To wash your sa i l , NEVER ma chine wash them . Doing so wi ll damage the ma t eri al as well as remove the f inish of the sa i l . I f your sa i l be comes dir ty, c lean it with a mi ld dish de t ergent and rinse with fresh wa t er. Do not blea ch or use other h arsh chemic als on the sa i l for they c an also ruin the f inish , de creasing the l i fe of the sa i l . It is not re commended to s tore your sa i l we t , doing so is an invit a tion for mi ldew to grow. 3 . It is not re commended to dry your sa i l in the sun be c ause other th an when in use, over exposure of UV rays wi ll slowly brea k down the ma t eri al of the sa i l . Be aware of the surfa c e th a t you are drying your sa i l on as asph al t and other park ing lot surfa c es are very abrasive to the sa i l ma t eri al and may cont a in chemic als (i . e. oi l ) th a t c an damage the sa i l . Avoid h anging your sa i ls up to dry in the breez e, unne c essary flogging wi ll grea t ly reduc e the l i fe of the sa i l . 4 . F la k ing or roll ing your sa i l is high ly re commended.
