In todays times, the world is faces with situations and possibilities never seen before.

While some say that history repeats itself, how does it apply when events like these have not occurred before? As Douglas Coupland said, We live in an era with no historical precedents. History is no longer useful as a tool in helping us understand current changes. Though we can look to the past for wisdom, we, as the population of the 21 st century, must make moral and government decisions based not only on the present, but also the future. Today, voters and lawmakers are bombarded with new ethical issues, such as LGBT rights, abortion, and drug use. Wherein these were banned without question in the past, people are now becoming more open to new policies. With the morals of many changing, while others are standing firm in their beliefs, old decisions may not apply to present times. Compromise is important in the balance of our world, so we must set up a plan that seems to suit everyone. Another large issue is often brought forth in society today: government policy. With many debates not just between lawmakers, but also those who are affiliated with differing political parties, the government has been inconclusive with decisions. Many wonder how the United States will vote on aspects of health care, on foreign policy, on government spending, and how, since we currently are in economic recovery, we will avoid another recession. Obviously, policy in the past does not fit today, or these decisions wouldnt be issues. The U.S. government was made flexible by our founding fathers because of this reason. The modern world is always changing, and our country should reflect that. The choices made will not only affect how we live today, but the state of the United States will be in for our children, and possibly, our grandchildren. For many, the future is a frightening and uncertain place. No one can know for sure what it will bring, but it is most likely affected by events today. Even if we make suitable decisions for this era, we will have to reevaluate them in the next. New information, technology, and ideas always crop up, and should be considered. While events such as war and poverty may always occur, there will always be unprecedented changes. Think of all the advances, especially in technology, that we had made in the past century alone. Now we are worried about nuclear warfare and terrorism, which werent even practiced before. Future always brings changes, changes always bring new ideas, and new ideas always bring new decisions. In order to survive, we must adapt. While in some aspects, history repeats themselves, we must not base current decisions on the past. The world is always changing, and so must we. Keep that in mind when voting, for the future will be easier to bear if our choices prepare for it. Modern times call for modern changes, and those structures that are overly stiff will fall when a new storm approaches.
