JOB ANNOUNCEMENT COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

MinKwon Center for Community Action invites applications for a Community Organizer. The Organizer will work with our Advocacy & Organizing staff to outreach to/mobilize Korean community members, build MinKwon Centers membership base, and develop campaigns around important community issues. Organization History & Mission The MinKwon Center for Community Action was established in 1984 as the Young Korean American Service & Education Center (YKASEC) to meet the needs and concerns of the Korean American community. Since our founding, we have made a profound presence through various grassroots organizing, education, and advocacy initiatives that address important community issues, including immigration policies, voter rights, and cultural awareness. The MinKwon Center places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of our marginalized community members, including youth, elderly, recent immigrants, low-income residents, and limited-Englishproficient residents. Community Need MinKwon Center seeks a Community Organizer to work directly with the growing Korean American immigrant population in New York City. It is estimated that there are around 200,000 Korean Americans living in the greater New York area, and the largest population resides in the greater Flushing area. Many of these Korean Americans are low- or middle-income residents, are limited-English-proficient and are linguistically isolated, and lack proper immigration status. They are often the victims of racial and language discrimination, as well as exploitation by employers and landlords. Job Description The Community Organizer would work with MinKwon Centers Advocacy and Community Organizing Program to develop an informed, active base of community members who are engaged in advocacy campaigns on issues such as comprehensive immigration reform, fairer allocation of city and state budgets, and anti-hate-crime efforts. The organizer would have the following responsibilities: Engage in intensive street outreach and door-to-door outreach to Korean community members Mobilize community members to participate in MinKwon Center campaign events Develop members leadership abilities, coordinate regular member meetings, and track members contacts in our membership database Participate in meetings with other coalition groups on joint campaigns Job Requirements Experience in direct community organizing (preferred) Interest and experience in working on social justice issues, such as immigrants rights, workers rights, and civil rights Spoken fluency or near-fluency in Korean Excellent communications skills and willingness to engage in conversations Ability to work independently and cordially with co-workers and allies.
