n English the digraph 'qu' most often denotes the cluster /kw/, except in borrowings from French
where it represents /k/ as in 'plaque', and some other words such as queue, wherein it represents
/kj/[citation needed]. See list of English words containing Q not followed by U. Q is the second
most rarely used letter in the English alphabet. In script written English, the capital 'Q' (script: Q) is very
close in appearance to a numeral two, '2', and many people use the print 'Q' instead. Q is the secondleast-common letter in the English Language, with a frequency of just 0.09% in words. It is more frequent than Z, however.

he lowercase Q (q) is usually seen as a lowercase O with a descender (i.e., downward vertical tail)
extending from the right side of the bowl, with or without a swash (i.e., flourish), even a reversed
lowercase p. The lowercase Q's descender is usually typed without a swash due to the major
style difference typically seen between the descenders of the lowercase G (a loop) and lowercase
Q (vertical). The descender of the lowercase Q is sometimes handwritten finishing with a rightward
swash to distinguish from the leftward facing curved descender on the lowercase G.

n 1600 B.C.E., the Phoenician alphabet's leer had

a linear form that served as the base for some later
forms. It's name mu have correonded closely
to the Hebrew or Arabic aleph.

When the ancient Greeks adopted the alphabet, they had

no use for the gloal opthe r phoneme of the Phoenician pronunciation of the leer, and the sound that the
leer denoted in Phoenician and other Semic languages
so they used an adaptation of the sign to represent the
vowel /a/, and gave the similar name of alpha. In the
earlie Greek inscrtions aer the Greek Dark Ages, dating to the 8 century BC, the leer res upon s side, but
in the Greek alphabet of later times generally resembles the modern capal leer, although many local varieties can be diinguied by the ortening of one leg, or
by the angle at whi the cross line is set.
The Etruscans brought the Greek alphabet to their civilization in the Italian Peninsula and le the leer unanged.
The Romans later adopted the Etruscan alphabet to wre
the Latin language, and the resulting leer was preserved
in the Latin alphabet used to wre many languages, including Engli. Marta Regular. pt

German

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like ba, and if he lied his
head a lile he could see his brown belly, ightly domed and divided by ares into i sections. e bedding was hardly able to cover and seemed ready to ide o any moment. His
many legs, pifully thin compared wh the size of the re of him, waved about helplesy as
he looked. "What's happened to me?" he thought. It wasn't a dream. His room, a proper human
room although a lile too small, lay peacefully beeen s four familiar walls. A colleion
of textile samples lay read out on the table - Samsa was a travelling salesman - and above
there hung a piure that he had recently cut out of an illurated magazine and housed in
a nice, gilded frame. It owed a lady ed out wh a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright,
raising a heavy fur mu that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer. Gregor
then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hiing
the pane, whi made him feel que sad. "How about if I eep a lile b longer and forget all
this nonsense", he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used
to eeping on his right, and in his present ate couldn't get into that posion. However hard
he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled ba to where he was. He mu have tried
a hundred times, ut his eyes so that he wouldn't have to look at the oundering legs, and
only opped when he began to feel a mild, dull pain there that he had never felt before. "Oh,
God", he thought, "what a renuous career is that I've osen! Travelling day in and day out.
Doing business like this takes mu more eort than doing your own business at home,
and on top of that there's the curse of travelling, worries about making train conneions,
bad and irregular food, conta wh dierent people all the time so that you can never get
to know anyone or become friendly wh them. It can all go to Hell!" He felt a ight it up
on his belly; pued himself owly up on his ba towards the headboard so that he could
li his head beer; found where the it was, and saw that was covered wh lots of lile
whe ots whi he didn't know what to make of; and when he tried to feel the place wh
one of his legs he drew quily ba because as soon as he toued he was overcome
by a cold udder. He id ba into his former posion. "Geing up early all the time", he
thought, " makes you upid. You've got to get enough eep. Other travelling salesmen live
a life of luxury. For inance, whenever I go ba to the gue house during the morning to
copy out the contra, these gentlemen are always ill siing there eating their breakfas. I
ought to ju try that wh my boss; I'd get kied out on the ot. But who knows, maybe
that would be the be thing for me. If I didn't have my parents to think about I'd have given in
my notice a long time ago, I'd have gone up to the boss and told him ju what I think, tell him
everything I would, let him know ju what I feel. He'd fall right o his de! And 's a funny
sort of business to be siing up there at your de, talking down at your subordinates from up
there, eecially when you have to go right up close because the boss is hard of hearing. Well,
there's ill some hope; once I've got the money together to pay o my parents' debt to him
- another ve or six years I suppose - that's denely what I'll do. at's when I'll make the
big ange. Fir of all though, I've got to get up, my train leaves at ve." And he looked over at
the alarm clo, tiing on the e of drawers. "God in Heaven!" he thought. It was half pa
six and the hands were quietly moving forwards, was even later than half pa, more like
quarter to seven. Had the alarm clo not rung? He could see from the bed that had been
set for four o'clo as ould have been; certainly mu have rung. Yes, but was possible
to quietly eep through that furnure-raling noise? True, he had not ept peacefully, but
probably all the more deeply because of that. What ould he do now? e next train went
at seven; if he were to cat that he would have to ru like mad and the colleion of samples was ill not paed, and he did not at all feel particularly fre and lively. And even if
he did cat the train he would not avoid his boss's anger as the ofce assiant would have
been there to see the ve o'clo train go, he would have put in his report about Gregor's not
being there a long time ago. Marta regular, pt
